For the second time, I bought a CotW product. And for a second time, I like it enough to review it.
On my first review, I made a complaint about the lack of a few tables that hindered the book, since you needed to carry the core book as well. Not only did they patch that with an update, but they remembered the feedback when writing Mutational Evolution. That's worth a note.
Each book had a hidden gem. Last time, it was the nanite-infused rocks, a nice concept even if I still have no clue how to use it. This time, it is the four family trees. Not just because they help put everything in sequence, but because you can print them out, stick them on the wall and flip between the mini-essays in the front and the creature descriptions, tracking how things grew, changed and died.
This makes the book more useful than not only pretty much every other Make A Monster product (most of which help generate one-off oddballs instead of genera and families) but also beats my biology school books hollow.
How many game products can you say that about?
For the tl:dr crowd, this not only gives you four groups of monsters to use, you get the tools to make many more. And you might even learn something to boot.
