In many ways, QERTH is a parody of "Basic Set" D&D. Not so much a "heartfelt tribute" as some of the other games out there, but more of a "slightly too hard friendly slap on the back at the top of the stairs" kind of thing. It's cute, it's quirky, and it's kind of cruel, but I like it.

The rules to this game are based on the second edition of Hex Games' QAGS (Quick and Easy Game System), which is a system I've had no previous experience with. Thankfully, this PDF includes the "Qik Start Rules" for QAGS, which provides all the rules you need to make use of QERTH. In fact, a full understanding of QAGS 2E might be detrimental to "grokking" QERTH, seeing as the rules deviate so much and so often from the standard system. (It's part of the parody, of course, that the rules should be more "sophisticated" than standard QAGS)

Even with all that unfamiliarity arrayed against me, I had no trouble reading through this book. In fact, I've only read it through twice, and I already feel like I could sit down and run a session. The book is just written very well and organized smartly. The book is also uses affable, irreverent, and sometimes mock-arrogant tones that switch off at just the right times to get a point across to the reader.

If the idea of a tongue-in-cheek D&D game featuring "Rabbis", "Cheese-Makers", and "Murderers" among the character classes appeals to you, then by all means grab this up. The humor is a bit on the "frat-house" side at times, but not always, and even the frat-house moments are funny.

What's more, the game is skillfully designed, and fully playable all in this one text. Player's Rules, GM Rules, Monsters, and a default Dungeon Setting are all included. It's a full package, and a good one at that.

I've only had this PDF for a few days, and it has fast become one of my favorite things. I haven't had a chance to play-test the game, yet, but merely reading the text has made me a happier person than I was before.

Liked: Pretty Much Everything. The Jobs available to player characters are just priceless, even if the Knomes get a bad rap :) This game just screams out to be played with friends who like to laugh and perhaps have a drink whilst they slaughter whatever they decide to call "monsters" that evening.

Disliked: This is only the "Basic Set." Job Levels 1 through 3 are all that's covered, character-wise. Sure, it fits the theme of the parody and all, but I want those Journeyman Rules right now!

Overall: Easily a 5 star effort from Hex Games.
