Relly enjoyed the game. . . and I think a couple of bucks for the expansions is in my gaming budget. I thought the basic rules made a great platform to expand and a campaign would be great. Thanks for the fun . . . and well worth the price.

Played a couple of games so far, this game is fantastic! Rules look like a simplified version of the (already simple) Kings of War fantasy rules, using polyhedral dice instead of "buckets of D6", and work (you got them in 5 minutes). Some mechanics do not seem "right" at first sight, but they must be seen in a solo wargame perspective. The enemy AI is also very simple and logical, regiments move towards the nearest enemy, unless they can apply a special rule (like Archery). In case of doubt I use common sense or roll a die. This and the random enemy deployment reflects well the idea of an evil, aggressive horde. I have still to try the Heroes of the Battlefield and I point out that there is another pdf, called Custom Armies, with point values and special rules for making your own units. On a side note, you can use whatever scale of miniatures and basing (I play with 6mm miniatures on a 60x60cm board, halving all distances) or paper counters.

I've been playing this on and off since about 2011. The rules are neat and simple and quick to learn, giving a fun filled 30 minutes or so. But while they are simple, the "AI" you fight againgst still has a decent chance of beating you. Also, as others have found, because the rules refers to to units rather than actual numbers of figures, things can be scaled up for real massed battles or down to single figure level *

I bought the expansion packs for this and Chronicles of Arax more out of support/appreciation for Shane Garvey's work than necessity. I also fell it is shame that despite initial enthusiasm, back in 2011-12, there is no real community or continuity for this game, as I think it is a great intro to wargaming for busy folk or with children or just anyone really.

  • Because of this, I have just started scribbling up some "house rules" for "Chronicles of Vacuum!", that replaces regiments with space ships. (If anyone is interested...)

Fairly simple rules for mass combat as solo play. Feels like it could have used a little more tweaking of the enemy AI. But as it it works and is not another fake solo game. Units move based on their strength and nearest target. This means you actually do need some strategy when fighting the AI forces!

The combat system could be pared down a little or even a lot. But works as is.

I join everyone else in praising these rules--simple, straightforward, and easy to get into to. An excellent gateway game for newcomers, as well as a nice change of pace for veteran gamers. I have noticed an oddity no one else has mentioned: the rules present as a mass fantasy battle game, but the size of a regiment actually makes no difference. Whether a unit contains 3 figures or 103, it is eliminated when its wounds are reduced to 0. Thus, one could field an army containing very, very few miniatures, which is helpful for a beginner who does not own a lot of them. It may not be quite so attractive to someone who is looking for rules to use with large numbers of figures. Nevertheless, this is a very fine piece of work--the author is to be commended.

I got this because it was free, and I cant spend the amount that games which need miniatures require. I tested the single player a couple of times and so far, I am impressed enough to probably buy some of the expansions. I like how the random events help balance the single player game and am actually looking forward to trying this as a two player game.

After downloading and reading the rules I gave it a go. Good fun, but I think it needs a bit of tweaking and polishing, or perhaps I just need to 'house rule' my games.

After playing a few times, I felt the movement rates are too low or, alternately, the game is a few turns too short. Most times no combat happened until turn 3, and with only 5 turns in a game that doesn't leave much time for action. The combat system could use a little massage in the damage department, I found it quite frustrating when my cavalry scored a tremedous hit due to the charge special rule, a hit which resulted in no damage. Archery was not very effective either, mostly due the damage rolls. Perhaps a one point damage minimum for a hit is in order, or perhaps damage bonuses for the special talents at least. I echo the feeling of another reviewer who stated that enemy activation can be touchy if the higher point units are behind the lower point units due to random deployment. The short length of the game combined with low movement rates makes those high point units near useless until the last turn if they are in the second line. I enjoyed the random event rule, kept things a bit unpredictable, and the morale checks can be devastatingly wonderful if many 1s are rolled.

Overall a good game, potentially a very good game. I look forward to checking out the expansions, particularly the ones that add special fighters and allow one to create their own army lists. Core rules for free, expansions for a buck, how could a solo wargamer not give this one a try? If you like to solo wargame, you must download this one now. If you've never played a wargame solo before, this is DEFINITELY a good place for a beginner to start, so again, download now!

Good basic miniature type game. If you have played a lot of miniatures before, this game may not rate that high, but, if you new, or love the Chronicles of Arax solo game, this game may be for you. Since it is free, you should take a look. Supplements are few right now, but if the company supports it like it does CoA, this could be a fun game. Supplements are extremely reasonably priced.

I got this a week ago and havent had a chance until last night. I've played other types of wargames and the only complaint I had with them was too many rules to learn even before you start to play. With this 1 its simple and easy to learn. I love it because of that reason. With these rules you can play quick and fast games by yourself (a bonus since it's hard to find anybody else that plays wargamers).

Excellent stuff. Clear, elegant design, mainly focused on experienced wargamers in need to use their big fantasy collections even in a solitaire manner. The free aspect is obviously a plus, but the immediate update as people try the game out says a lot more about the support of this product as well.

And trust me, there´s a community out there already after a few days from its release!

Chronicles of Blood is a simple, functional and free miniature battle game that might also work as an introductory game for people new to the genre. Differently from Chronicles of Arax, I didn't find any innovations in the game, but it delivers what it promises. One thing I didn't like is the need to keep track of wounds for each troop, but I suppose that's simpler than having a lookup table for combat results, for instance.

Some minor nitpicking: since the rules don't say anything about friendly units passing through each other, and the enemy must activate troops in descending point value order (when playing solo,) you must place them in front of others or their first turn will be wasted. Still, this will make them exposed and prone to be ganged upon by the human player's troops.

Great game if you are into solo gaming, simple to learn and quick to play. Sample army lists are provided, not enough for serious gaming, but from what is there you can easily deduct the way point system is created and make your own armies according to the miniatures you own. Some minor things are left undefined (for example, can regiment attack unit it can not see, or what happen if the unit that lost the fight can not recoil 2cm due to impossible terrain or other unit occupying space), but whatever way you decide to resolve them, they will not affect the game as long as you apply them equally to your army and to one led by system.

Chronicles of Arax goes epic. Using a variation of the game system in the solo adventure system, Chronicles of Blood is an attempt to create solo wargaming. The system can also just as easily be used for a multi player game. A 14 page FREE wargame with quick easy rules. I call that bargain. There a few typos, nothing that affect rules, and that's the only downside I can offer. Further supplements (premium content) are coming to expand the choice of regiments and armies. Looking forward to them.
