Why was this separated into 58397298 jpg images instead of a PDF or epub or any other format for digital publishing for that matter? I won't be reading it until this error is fixed... I give an extra star for the pretty cover.

I'd recommend the author re-render the page sizes on this. There was major white space around my reader when I opened the files, and zooming in didn't really help at all. As for the story itself... It was alright. Nothing special, and I didn't get many laughs out of it (despite the author's claim at the back). The dialogue was well worded though, and it's clear from that that the author has some talent in this area. The art needs work, especially the paneling. I found it difficult to follow on some pages.
A nice attempt regardless and I'll look out for a next chapter, if there is one~.

First, thank you very much for your thoughtful review. I\'m very sorry you had a bad experience with this. You unfortunately got an older copy of the book, which did have some issues with it. And yes, I admit: I still have a lot to learn when it comes to lettering. We all do the best we can. I hope the latest version is a great improvement. |

Agh I love it. Admittedly it starts off a little slow, but there's enough things going on that kept me flipping to the next page. I'm glad I did.
The art struck me as a little rough at first, but after getting used to it it didn't matter. I think it was the choice of colouring... But overall it doesn't detract from the story. My favorite part by far was the clever and distinct character dialogue. The writer really knows how to capture this.
I intend to go buy the first Cancertown soon. Despite the fact that I hadn't read it, I found it very easy to pick up on what was going on. Props for that.

I was kind of surprised when I bought this... I'm familiar with the quality of AAM/Markosia's stuff, and I've got to say that I'm kind of surprised that this was published. The lack of backgrounds, the strange anatomy and the lack of any sort of tones in the work really make it look more like someone's first web-comic/manga attempt than a publishable graphic novel.
The inking is nice. But I think it could benefit from more varied line weight, especially if you aren't going to draw backgrounds. It makes your characters look like they're just floating around in a void, and they blend into the void since the lines are rather thin. One of the majorly jarring things I noticed is that everyone suffers from 're arr rook saaame'.. cough. That is, the facial structures of hte characters don't vary in the slightest. The older people are only distinguished from the younger by a couple of additional lines on their faces. It's a bit jarring! Some study would help there, and I'm sure it'd help iron out the inconsistencies from panel to panel.
The story... Is okay. I mean. It's what you expect from reading the blurb I guess. Not the best, but not the worst. I'll be reading 4, 5 and 6 soon, so I'm hoping to see some improvement.

As a super supporter of beginning western manga artists who complete a portion of their work and share it with the world, I bought this to do just that-- Support. Unfortunately, I can't recommend Rise at it's current price. It's a cliche approach to a cliche concept. The art is unpolished (though props for putting it all in colour) and the lettering is sometimes difficult to read... Not even the designs of the characters stood out.
If you're going to try and create a story around a concept so done-to-death as elemental style powers, you've got to do something new with it. Introducing the story via two disembodied voices introducing the main character pretty much spoilt what little of the story remained in this 22 page chapter. I suggest that the author re-think this opening concept to make it more interesting. Maybe starting with the bus accident and cutting down all the needless talking (gotta show, not tell) will help Rise start to stand out.
As for the art... Welllll keep practicing. Try learning to vary your line weight, and for certain take a look at panels in other manga to see how they're laid out. The paneling at the moment is your greatest weakness in the artwork. Keep trying and I will be watching to see for any improvements in the next chapter.
Just try to lower the price. $3 is much too high for this and I kind of regret my purchase.

I have to agree with the last reviewer here. Calling the art 'rough' is the most apt description I can think of, but I believe some further elaboration is owed-- The art is drawn entirely in pencils ( I think ) with colour slapped over the top in photoshop or something. The colours are especially garish and overall, it needs a lot of work.
More time taken to ink and colour this properly may help it's presentation, but nothing can salvage the paneling. I couldn't tell which order to read in half the time, and by the 10th page or so I was completely lost.
It's a good concept for a story, just very poorly rendered. It's free though, of course, so I can't complain about the price.

Obviously, it\'s always disappointing when someone doesn\'t like your work. However, as this review is clearly meant as constructive criticism, I will say \"Thank You for your time\". |

Not a lot to say, I liked it. The art especially, it's strong and I enjoy the spot colouring. I found the story pacing and writing confusing, but I liked the art to the extent that I forgave that. Thanks.

I wanted to say something nice about it, but...
It might have worked as a concious parody of anime. That's what it was trying to be. The overly cliche characters, dialogue, etc. I get that. I get what it was trying to be. But when the jokes you pile into something are so obvious, one after the other like this, it gets old really fast. If it was aimed at children, the writing would be forgivable.
...But where the writing was forgivable, the art isn't. The art is -atrocious-. The artist has no grasp on anatomy, line work or colouring. The character designs are boring except for the random scuba suit guy which was the only element of this I found amusing. The panelling and flow is confusing. And google search backgrounds? Really? I'm pretty certain that the art isn't intentionally this bad, since the book is being sold for money.
No excuses. > _ > I want my $1 back.

This was cute~. The story seemed a bit rushed, and not a whole lot actually happened despite the fact that we were introduced to 8495783927 characters (probably a bit too many characters to start with). I'm not really familiar with Oz stuff, but the story seems to be written with this in mind, so it didn't matter much. Extra kudos for yuri. It's a shame that this won't continue as a comic series, since i think it leant itself to that format well.

...Usually I would leave some constructive critique here, but there's not a lot I can say about this.
The art is terrible, the panelling is confusing and the writing is both. How this publisher decided this was good enough to put to print I'll never know, let alone why they decided to charge so much for it. The only way this could be improved is for it to be completely done over again.
I gave it a chance, but I couldn't read past the second chapter. I want my $5 back.

I bought this to help support the aspiring manga community... And while I'm glad I did, I have to say it's not really worth the price. At the time I bought it, it was $3, down from an apparent $5-- which is actually pretty steep for as little story as you get in this. There's no way I would have bought this for $5.
Speaking of the story itself, it's easy to follow, but flat and riddled with cliches. I know this is just a primer/introduction thing, but it was cringe worthy. I hope it bridges away from the predictable, overused elements as it goes on.
The art was the weakest point. It was inconsistent and the pages which weren't rife with anatomical problems looked heavily referenced (I did appreciate the one panel which seemed like a homage to DBZ though. Big fan~). I suggest to study up on figure drawing. Real people, not just animu characters. Oh, and the colouring. It seems entirely traditional, which I appreciate. So much work would have gone into that. But the colours aren't leveled at all, and (I'll guess they're done with copics or something) aren't blended properly. As a result, they clash everywhere. Try and unify the chosen colours, or level them in photoshop or something after scanning.
I do commend the lettering work though. The sound effects and text boxes are placed very well. And that's not an easy thing to do~.
TL;DR - Needs a lot of work but I see potential if the artists works hard on the art and breaks away from a cliche storyline.
