RPG Creatures - Bestiary 1 (Extended Edition)
Publisher: Cloister Publications
by justin b. [Verified Purchaser]

Years ago I was supporting this project when it was a paid email subscription. I was also able to get in on the Lulu POD of this title. The creatures themselves have not made their way into any of my games. I was looking at a few of them before writing this review and felt that I can quickly adapt any of these creatures to either the newest edition the original RPG or any of the OSR variants since the creatures have enough information and a baseline that you can use to move the dials for your game.

For the product each monster has a full page, color image, and then a full page write up. Formatting wise I would of prefered to if a creature didn't fill a page leaving blank space over starting the write up for the next creature. Sometimes it can get a little distracting having to flip around the full page art.

I feel it is a worthwhile investment for the content if you are looking for something new and exciting for your RPG game. Checking the different sources that the artist Nicholas Cloister was using in the past and including Patreon it appears that he has gone silent. I fear that the RPG community may have lost a creator that had a bright future ahead of them.

I encourage anyone who is looking for something a little different, maybe more aquatic, and that allows for some creative interpertation to pick up this title. At PWYW it is a great deal and will allow you to set your own value.

Valley of the Gilded Tower (5E)
Publisher: The Arcane Library

In fair disclosure I received a copy of this adventure in PDF form for a fair review.

Valley of the Gilded Tower is the follow up adventure to Masque of the Worms, which resides in the Edgar Allan Poe series of adventures. This means that each adventure has coloring and themes described in these stories and poems and they are clearly presented in the first pages of the adventure and carry through the adventure.

This adventure clocks in at 16 pages including cover and OGL statement at the end.

Pros: Layout is well done double column with full color art that fits the theme and tone of the adventure well. Playable in what looks to be 2-4 hours each NPC has a block when introduced in a scene, with their Appearance, Wants, and a Secret - leaving room for trhe DM to expand on these Each encounter has a page dedicated to it and gives enough that you can shape the adventure to your tables need and your style. A new unique monster to challenge your players. The addition of Dramatic Question in each encounter and aftermath of the adventure. Makes for easy running and finishing the adventure.

Cons: Looking for a con I would go with the background for printing. If you wanted to print a copy of this to take with you to the table, it would be difficult. It would be nice if a printer friendly version was included.

comments: This adventure module is bordering on what I consider the OSR, not all situations can be resolved with combat and should be discouraged. Smart play is what will get you the most rewards. The rewards from the adventure are not just monetary and would make for a springboard into future adventures. The inclusion of what happens should you succeed or fail makes this a living adventure and will encourage future play. I look forward to future products and adventures from the Arcane Library and encourage anyone who wants something different to take a look.

For full disclosure: I received a copy of this document for an honest feedback.

The writing on the document is well done with few gramatical errors that would detract from the delivery of the adventure itself. The writing style is done in such a way that each room or portion of the scenario adventure is its own page. lending itself to quick reference at the game table with minimal page turning. At the end of each section it has an area that indicates where the players are likely to go after, yet leaving itself open to options if the players want to wander off script. In addition to this information each room or page has a section that plainly states what is going on, and what is opposing the players. What makes the room a challenge for them.

The adventure itself is a simple quest, leaving enough room with all elements to lend itself to quick character growth and multiple ways that the PCs could be enticed into taking the adventure. More than, here is 100gp, go kill me 30 kobolds and bring me their paws.

Solid writing, layout is easy to use at the table, and enough for the adventure to get off of the ground. A solid piece and one that I would like to take to the table again. I also appreciate the smaller adventure size. The page count is approachable, leaving time in a session to create characters, as well get the entire adventure in in a single night.

Crypts of Azarumme (5E)

I received a Preview/Free Copy of this adventure for a fair review.

One of the first elements of the adventure that caught my eye is the "Dramatic Question." What is the motivation and elements for the scene and what is the question that you ask when running it. That has a lot of potential, yet fell a little short. The questions felt repetitive.

The addition of the combat cards that Arcane Library is known for. Fantastic addition to the adventure.

Also the adventure had an "evil Presence" feature that has changed how I look at designing rewards/consequences for my homebrew games.

Worth picking up the adventure even for inspiration.

Combat Cards: Campaign Bundle Core Set (5E)
Publisher: The Arcane Library
by justin b. [Verified Purchaser]

For Full Disclosure I did receive a copy of this document at no cost for my honest review.

This is a tool or resource that for my personal games, as a DM that has to travel to his/her games, that I don't feel I would utilize personally. This is due to the fact that ti would be one more item to transport and set up once on site. Production wise these cards are well layed out with a minimalist approach. Covering all of the required meat and potatoes of the creatures and players. While at the table you could leverage the character cards to quickly identify wether an opponent has hit your PC's with the character cards. Only passing on the pertinent information of whether the creature hit or missed. This would be highly effective if you rolled behind the screen more than in front of the players.

The magic item cards would be the most effective for me since I do create customer magic items and having the cards that I could print out after typing out to pass to a player would be useful. I see myself adopting these to assist my games, in lieu of me constantly having to remind PCs what they were awarded in previous sessions.

In summary as a tool this is one that I will use situationally, I see merit in this product and the use that many GM/DM will get out of it. Production is top notch and well worth the investment.
