Steel Roses: the HeartQuest Guide to Mecha

Steel Roses and Mecha Aces for Fudge are very similar in their approach to the animie mecha system. Both are excellent. I have both and use them both. One has more adventures and more settings, one has more information on playing robot characters (artificial intelligence) or to have robots as NPCs barely under control of the players. Amazing stuff, this.

QUALITY: Excellent

VALUE: Very Satisfied
Fudge Treats: Shoujo Anime

I liked Fudge Treats: Shoujo Anime as a general overview of roleplaying in the world. The slim volume is also a weakness. For experienced GMs, there only 30 pages of rules, many of which already covered in Fudge Mecha Aces and/or Fudge Steel Roses. A few skills, gifts, faults are different, and there is a very short adventure, the briefness makes it hard to recommend beyond the new-player level.

QUALITY: Acceptable

VALUE: Satisfied
Fudge Random Bestiary Generators

Here's an intriguing product that I wish I could put in a palm-pilot and take it to my roleplaying sessions. Generic enough to roll up really really odd creatures (spell-casting dinosaurs, natch.)

Note that in the help section, the article about combat is not correct about the numbers, but this is easily correctable by reading the "Fudge in a Nutshell" or the Fudge 10th Anniversary Edition.

QUALITY: Acceptable

VALUE: Satisfied
Atomik Alienz
Publisher: Precis Intermedia
by Tim L. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 11/22/2005 00:00:00

Atomik Alienz, like GURPS produce (Space, Aliens, Bestiary) and like Hero products (Star Hero, the alien race book), puts together a wide variety of other-world creatures. The difference is that without a specific system, Atomik Alienz can suggest creatures for story purposes free of said systems. The only problem is that the reference material in the back is slightly dated, and the lack of a setting or technology for beginners.

I can't wait until Atomik Supers.

QUALITY: Very Good

VALUE: Very Satisfied
Atomik Magick & Grimoire
Publisher: Precis Intermedia
by Tim L. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 11/22/2005 00:00:00

Atomik Magic and Atomik Grimoire are excellent. They may repeat some of the material found in other generic supplements (GURPS, the Hero system), and the lack of an integrated setting may put some off (RuneQuest, for example), but if your system is lacking a basis for magic or the reasons for it or doesn't have spells, this is a great generic supplement to have. There are spells in the Grimoire you simply can't find anywhere (a sentient ball of flesh you can enter??).

Atomik Psioniks
Publisher: Precis Intermedia
by Tim L. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 11/22/2005 00:00:00

Atomik Psionics is probably the best generic reading material. Like GURPS Powers and the old GURPS Psionics, of the Hero system (naming two), this supplement gives many frames to hang PSI onto (quantum physics for hard-SF, alternate dimensions to include magic as a companion). Whereas Hero breaks PSI down into the specific effects so the player can combined multiple effects to create anything (ground up), Atomik and GURPS uses broad-based power attributes (or power levels in GURPS 3e) and skills to simulate fiction and the movies. All are good. Atomik is additional, and exceptional, reading.

QUALITY: Excellent

VALUE: Very Satisfied
Atomik CyberTek
Publisher: Precis Intermedia
by Tim L. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 11/22/2005 00:00:00

The tension between modifying yourself with hardware on purpose, from replacing an arm in a hard-science fiction environment to putting a telephone line jack in your brain to run the net in a farther future setting gives the Atomik Cybertek generic supplment the same edge as found in the Cyberpunk genre. Atomik Cybertek also includes "wet ware", or biological modifications to the human form, raising the same question as other generic supplements: will will recognize us as humans beyond what we are now? Will we be still human? or is there no difference between machine AI and human sentience?

Also includes advice on various scenarios, for example the classic Cyberpunk scenario: replacing human parts with machine parts makes one less human, or modifies human away from reality, or adds to human reality.

Great stuff, this.

QUALITY: Very Good

VALUE: Very Satisfied
