Champions of Midworld
Publisher: Fourth Wish Games
by Mamading C. [Verified Purchaser]

Your character is a Champion of Midworld. There are six types of Champion:

  1. Warrior
  2. Hardsuit
  3. Magician
  4. Adventurer
  5. Mystic
  6. Knight

The Champion's attributes are Might, Explore, Arcane, and Technology. The implicit point buy system associated with the atrributes and types means that Champions are effectively built on 8 points (with each point being a d4 dice).

NPCs have attributes, but not a type. Easy enemies might be built on 6 points, Medium on 8 and Hard on 10. For a wider spread, 4, 8 and 12 should work. House rule suggestion: A group of mooks might share one set of attributes between them.

Each type of champion can be customised by choosing three Special abilities from a list of six available for their type and creating a Unique Talent aspect.

Core mechanic is a d4 success counting dice pool based on the relevant attribute which can be augmented by Specials, Bonus Dice (d6), Gear (1d4) and Hero Stones. This pool is rolled against a Target Number. In the opposed rolls regarding Combat and Traps, the highest roll wins with the difference being the amount of damage in wounds done. PCs can take 5 wounds before they are out of action.

Hero Stones are a one at a time bennie that can add a d8 to a roll and make all the dice in the pool explosive. Exploding dice rules are a bit exotic and worth reading closely.

Lots of multi-column d8 GM Tables with supplementary material follow to provide the spark for a pick up game. They provide a lot of flavour and should inspire GMs interested in science fantasy gaming. In fact, it's worth getting this just for the tables if that's your sort of thing.

The only other things I might ask for are an additional page with a paragraph or two about the setting and either a sample bestiary or more guidance on creating NPCs/Enemies.

This looks great for pick up games, one shots and episodic non-campaign gaming in a Saturday Morning Cartoon science fantasy setting.

Nuclear Sunset: The Southwest (Mutant Future)
Publisher: Vigilance Press
by Mamading C. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 08/05/2019 15:08:46

The previous review is pretty much on point and I don't have any serious quibbles with it. For my part, I enjoyed my read of it but would recommend printing out at A4/Letter size as it can be hard going on the eyes otherwise.

The sandbox content was good and I'd be happy to running it with the post-apocalyptic ruleset of my choice (considering OmegaLite20, Atomic Highway and The Rad-Hack). On that note, this is a mechanics-lite supplement with less than a handful of Mutant Future specific monsters being mentioned such as Ant Horrors. I don't remember any mention of spidergoats! So easy to port to the game of your choice.

The core of the book is a gazeeteer of the post-apocalyptic Southwest covering settlements, cities and ruins. The coverage of settlements and cities is pretty robust with writeups of the locations, relevant adventure hooks and faction relations. The take on Carlsbad Caverns (Big Room) was particularly inspiring, you could run a whole campaign around spelunking in the over 119 caves in the locality, because you know there is going to be lots of weird stuff to be encountered! In contrast, I felt Las Vegas (Vega) was a bit of a let down, mundane and no adventure hooks. Really? I would throw this take on Vegas out and possibly go with something has has more of a Six-String Samurai feel.

Ruins get a less detailed writeup but guidance is given on hoards, random encounters and hazards for each one. Enough for the GM to get their teeth into.

Some coverage of major topography for the region is provided before the main faction writeups. Six factions are detailed, four of which are mentioned in the faction relations section of the location writeups. Out of those four, The Cartel doesn't feature in any of the location writeups and adventure hooks. Given the natural fit with Vega as acknowledged in the faction relations section, that seems like a missed opportunity. As the BBEGs of the setting, the coverage of the 88th was adequate but would have benefited from more details. The same goes for their hometown of Springtown.

The remaining two factions I have mixed feelings about. They both feel tacked on as they aren't mentioned anywhere else in the book. One of them feels almost entirely useless except for providing PCs with access to a very specific mode of transportation. If that doesn't figure in your game, they are entirely useless. The second is more promising as it potentially ties to the Groom Lake/Area 51 ruins and the underdeveloped alien thread in the book.

I have written up pretty extensive notes based on my reading and put together a GM binder for running a sandbox campaign in the setting, sourcing the relevant material to support that campaign. So all in all, this supplement does what it intends to do, provide a foundation for a post-apocalyptic Southwest sandbox. Beyond my critiques above, pretty much the only other thing I could ask for would be a few major NPCs to represent the factions and locations. Other than that, I'm good!

If you ever wanted something like GURPS IOU (Illuminati University) but for a D&D style fantasy world, grab this! This gives you everything you need to run a Wizard School comedy sandbox with serious adventuring getting done too! It's a low gold campaign because you have to got make sure the student PCs have to work their way through college by taking on jobs.

Only thing I would like added would be a bit more fleshing out of the town the school is based in, especially the key NPCs in town, but I can fill in that detail if need be. Combining with a few city-oriented supplements to help with that.

Carnage Wasteland Post-Apocalyptic Map Pack 1

Today, I wrote a 1500 word Gamma World mini-sandbox based on these maps.

They are attractive and in genre with just enough microcontent in them and the blurb on DrivethruRPG to hang my own content off.

I'm knocking off a star because there is content in the sales blurb that should have been in the product itself, perhaps as an introduction or preface.

Weird Shit Generator (Fantasy)

Having used this, I feel that the previous reviewer missed the point.

Generators are prompts. Unless you are very lucky, the initial results aren't going to be ready to run. You have to apply creativity and judgment to either selectively rerolling on the table whose result you're not happy with or come up with a better fitting result off the top of your head.

Also you will probably want to rewrite the generated sentences to better express what you've come up with and to drop extraneous portions.

Applying this approach can produce surprising and satisfactory results.

I can definitely see how this can produce gonzo and sometimes gross things to put in your game. Will definitely be using this when appropriate to keep things interesting!

This is brilliant stuff! I'm eight days into the programme and I'm really enjoying it. It has the right blend of challenge, variety, narrative and even some weak game mechanics to motivate one to stick with it.

As a geek, who finds it hard to get started and even harder to stick with exercise programmes, I can say this is a real winner. I'm publically blogging my progress at https://www.facebook.com/mamading
