KotR:A mantiene le sue promesse. Un'ambietnazione intrigante e ricca di spunti, che lascia però spazio ad essere personalizzata ulteriormente da giocatori e narratore così da non appesantire di troppe informazioni inutili il lettore.

Lo stile del setting è molto vicino alla atmosfere degli anime giapponesi a cui si ispira unendo elementi di slice of life scolastici, fantascienza, robot giganti e atmosfere più fantasy influenzate dai miti arturiani. Garantisce una discreta varietà, pur avendo uno stile ben preciso e definito cha aiuta a circoscrivere l'atmosfera del setting.

Il sistema di gioco si allontana un po' da quello più semplificato di NtoTheEnd per permettere di rendere meglio le scene d'azione (che in un gioco pieno di robot giganti non possono certo mancare). Tutto rimane comunque abbastanza semplice ruotando dietro ad un'unica meccanica a cui si applicano alcune varianti. L'idea di usare "parole/concetti" invece di "statistiche" rimane anche qui. Cosa sempre interessante. Forse l'unico difetto è che dovrete procurarvi un numero abbastanza alto di dadi di ogni tipologia per giocare.

L'approccio è comunque molto narrativo come nella maggior parte dei prodotti di FumbleGDR. Quindi questo gioco rimane adatto a chi preferisce la STORIA anche nelle scene d'azione e non apprezza statistiche e mappe tattiche complesse.

Il manuale fornisce una notevole quantità di tipologie di personaggi e molte professioni/classi i "jobs" tra cui scegliere. I personaggi sono dunque il vero focus e i protagonisti delle vostre storie.

Forse avrei apprezzato un numero più alto di esempi anche per i robot utilizzabili dai protagonisti, la cui creazione è invece lasciata quasi del tutto all'immaginazione dei giocatori. (Magari vedremo qualche futura espansione dedicata a loro).

In conclusione Kotr:A è un prodotto completo e interessante più fedele di molti altri all'immaginario di riferimento: se cercate le atmosfere di un Five Star Stories, i Cieli di Escaflowne, Xenogears, ma anche Mazinga e Jetter Robot da unire a quelle delle più classiche commedie scolastiche giapponesi, siete nel posto giusto.

It's rare to see such well-crafted products born out of a short game jam. This manual (for which the author is preparing a second edition) is easy, short, concise and clear. I admit that I personally like systems that use "concepts" instead of "stats" to define characters (e.g. Neverwhere and Not The End). Freedom Universal builds on it an interesting system with a well-defined and functional structure. Easy to use and, by its nature, very versatile and easily usable in different settings. Recommended.

This little game is contained in 3 simple booklets: Player's Guide, GM's Guide and Scenario Creation. Even in such a small space it conveys a good and defined vibe and the mechanics are clearly explained. Experience a life-long story of wandering heroes in the Sengoku era, with "Forged in the Dark-like” rules and an interesting aging system for characters evolution. A really good title, quick to learn and different from other games with similar settings. If you like a historical/legendary Japanese setting (or even a wuxia-like wandering warriors) check out Blood Red Blossom.

I must say that DTRPG is also hosting the 3rd edition of this beautiful indie game. Revised, more defined and with cleaner graphics. However, I wanted to write this really short review here, as it was the one I first played many years ago and I remember it as the first game (at least I had played) using adjective-based mechanics. It was interesting and it worked quite well. Now it is no longer a rarity anymore, but back then I found the idea really innovative and I still remember Neverwhere RPG as something special.

The rules are simple and easy to learn. You can create characters pretty fast and the mood and basic background information of the setting are all in just 20 pages. That was also a pretty modern approach.

That said, it is obviously a work of a big fan of Neil Gaiman's Neverwhere world, and you can see it from the vast encyclopedia that closes the book: the “Guide to London A-Z”, where you will find many characters and places from the original works. The only flaw is probably that all the contents of the guide are not divided into thematic chapters (which also in the 3rd edition). That being the case, the places, organizations and relevant characters are all in the same place, so if you don't remember the name of what you are looking for, you are forced to scroll through a long list of items to find it.

For an indie product so dated it must also be said that most illustrations and pieces of photographic art are definitely appreciable.

So the 3rd edition is probably the most complete choice, but if you like it, i suggest to download even that previous version.
