Coaching Inn
Publisher: Grim Mapmaker

This is exactly the style I'm looking for: More of that strangely compelling and well-crafted mapwork from the days of WFRP1. So hard to find maps like this anymore. It must require some kind of special mineral in the water supply when someone is growing up or something.

In fact, this coaching inn is an enormous improvement over the generic coaching inn in that system's main rulebook--I oughta know, I've drawn it in detail a dozen times by now in my games. This layout makes a lot more sense to me and ought to be a whole lot easier to use, while still retaining its odd quirkiness.

There's a top notch realistic drawing of what the building looks like, always appreciated. The map itself is well rendered and easy to follow. There's even a players-version without the labeling, which is an extra nice touch. It shows the artist is thinking ahead.

Most of all, actual thought given to the fireplaces, the well, and the privy. Praise Grungni!

I hope the publisher gives us more of this level of stuff. As they say in the pub, "More of this stuff, less of the other stuff."

How to Use Romance in Your Game

I do not recommend this product at all.

Its basically some cut and paste general background information on some relationship/marriage trivia. It's a real hodge podge, with some random rules ideas thrown in. Reading it made my brain ache.

Look, the Pendragon stuff in the past has some of the most concise, well-outlined rules and ideas for romance I've ever had the pleasure to read. That's when all guns are blazing.

And GMs need good stuff like that. The romance section of RPGs is in the dark ages right now.

This? This is for people wanting to grab every last ounce of information from the four corners of the earth in case they missed something.

Me? I can't use this, it's too garbled and ill-formatted to be of any casual use. Into the garbage chute!

Brownies Racial Supplement
Publisher: Meek Barbarian
by Paul F. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 11/11/2023 18:13:42

The first 2 pages are Title and Copyright, so there's only really 3 pages of content in this thing.

What's left is a lot of wordy text in the now-all-too-wearisome parchment manual style of post 80s game books trying to look like arcane tomes. Format is the mindkiller.

The last page has a little crunch around three styles of brownie and that's about it. Just stick to the Monster Manual version. Nothing to see here folks.

I mean, I'm not looking for an 'ecology of...," just some ideas about how to make brownies more interesting.

Specifics on stuff like what do they carry? What is their entertainment like? What do they cook? Can't I get any details or random tables on that for a buck to save me the time of making it up myself?

Somebody out there deserves my 1 dollar more.

Under Hill, By Water

This is THE Halfling supplement to own.

Like, it makes me want to defenestrate my Greyhawk Halfling module and weep at all the time I've lost trying to figure out a good way to do halflings. At least I made it this far and there is hope again.

What I like about this supplement is how it dials everything down to everyday living, low stakes aggravations with your neighbors and the local wildlife. It goes a long way in explaining what the Halfling viewpoint really is and why its so powerful.

You really get what Gandalf meant when he said that Hobbits could be as strong as old tree roots.

Formatting is simple and straightforward, not hard to scan. Very little wasted text. Artwork is not annoying, supports the mood of the text. Flavor is minimal and extracted solely from the crunch, which is awesome. Lots of easy to use tables. You could do an entire Halfling campaign just in a shire like village with this stuff.

Like, I immediately started using this in my Warhammer Fantasy campaign to pump up the jam and it fits in nicely, no shoehorning. Halfling town is in the house and dressed to the nines, yo!

I got a whole new mess of Halfling-centric careers out of just a few results from a random table. How cool is that? And those whacky and cute Halfling spells....yesssss, love love love it.

I'm a GM who makes fully detailed color maps on 22" x 28" posterboard for my players. Been doing it for decades. One thing I am always having to do is look up old maps and see if I can draft something that has the feel of accuracy while still being playable within the limitations of my chosen form.

This supplement is gobsmacking, to put it lightly. I'd give it 6 stars if I could. Someone has gone and done the work of providing a huge selection of period maps for me to look at and gain ideas from....or heck just use what's there for Ghod's sake. It's amazing, it's incredible!

There's the vast array of buildings (and ships!) catering to the English themed, and that's a big chunk of the offerings on hand--but the selection covers a few other bases too: Colonial America, Eastern and Western Europe. Not a comprehensive array, but enough for you to get a sense of differences.

I mean, an ironworks! A whaling station! Exactly what I was looking for! And I didn't have to spend 1d3 days making an investigation roll. I just start adapting immediately. Yeah. Good times.

When Sea Is Calling (legacy)

As Mr. Punch would say, "And that's the way you do it!"

Tight, easily scannable formatting, a little whimsy thrown in at the right places, all bases covered. I'm impressed. I actually love opening this PDF and checking it out.

I started using this immediately and often. Got a big coastal adventure for the party coming up. This filled in all the surface details and starter background I needed to mortar in the bricks of the main plot.

I know I'm getting a little hyperbolic in my praise here, but if I had just 2 more supplements like this my Ocean campaigns would literally be the greatest in the world. This is must have, like a hammer or a screwdriver.

Ship details, weird foes, island settlement basics, quick map generation, underwater ideas, damn there's just so much stuff and its not clouded by filler text. You take what you get and run with it because its readily suggestive.

Like, the flag colors. They can mean anything, but using them made me realize I could just make up a basic freebie skill for the mariner characters based around the flag signals and their symbolism. Good random tables will do that--help you think of stuff and run with it. For all the worthless junk on this site, stuff like this pays for the slog many times over.

One-Pager:Farming Village

There are three tables here: Daytime Sights/Sounds, Nighttime Sights/Sounds, and Village Dressing. Roll 1d8 for each and get an instant brief descriptor to inject life into your setting.

This is the kind of stuff that I could do myself, but I'm paying for the privilege of saving myself a day or two of having to come up with generic observations. For the price this absolutely cuts the mustard.

I used this right away for an adventure in some villages I'm cooking up. I checked out a couple of the other 1 pagers and scooped them up too. Gotta have variety in your toolset.

The format is easy to read and simple. Anybody with a Word Doc App could do this. Still, again, the price pays you back with a finished example with some mileage in it. The writers didn't skimp on content or ideas: I can use this as a template to make my own now.

Until I do it myself though, this sits in my toolbox whenever I need some filler to dress up the skeleton of the plot I have.

Mouth Brood
Publisher: Games Omnivorous
by Paul F. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 09/16/2023 02:55:26

A bunch of scientists check out a weird structure to try and pick up where a previous expedition didn't cut the mustard.

It's body horror ala "The Thing," only turned to 11 as you grapple with all the possible permutations of evolution gone horribly awry. This could fit into Cthulhu like a snap, or DnD as a kind of Expedition to the Barrier Peaks adventure. It plays great just by itself with the assigned setup.

The graphic design is beautiful, and the formatting is easy to parse and not hard on the eyes. Handouts and map are simple and to the point, leaving lots to the imagination.

The potential bottleneck is in the creatures--and wow are they a crazy mix of far out nightmares and beguiling mystery--because there are so many of them, and their interactions with each other and the PCs can mean all sorts of outcomes. However, the turn system and hex crawl means you have time to ease into them.

There's a boss creature to deal with, a survivor to maybe rescue or interrogate, reports for the sake of science to consider, clues to the structure to figure out or leave best alone....this adventure is a fat daddy with a whole lot of meat.

Biology is disgusting! I love it.

Bring me her bones
Publisher: Games Omnivorous
by Paul F. [Verified Purchaser]

Everything in the game description is pretty spot on: This is like nothing seen before. I'm going to have to boil it down from the Mr. Fantastic $10 words to something Ben Grimm could grok.

Characters come to a city and get involved in a deadly dangerous mystery involving the highest at court and the lowest in the abyss. A unique astrological map drives the action, while a bizarre city map beckons the party to fuss around and find out.

The minimalism is at a genius level of artistry. Filler text is virtually non-existent, yet the outline and random tables show you everything you need to know to progress. For example, in a paragraph's worth of text you learn all about the villain and how to play them without any ambiguity.

There's a reason why G1: Hill Giant Chiefs is an icon of sandbox glory in a few pages. This adventure cuts from that cloth and shows another way it can be done. And its right up there with Shadows Over Bogenhafen in terms of investigative plots, with less filling and it tastes great!

I can pick out just about anything from the adventure and use it to model something in my own game. For example, the simple rules part about how PC time and action is managed: How have I not used something like this yet?

For a scenario like this, it breaks down progress to a limited amount of moves and makes the astrological clock more meaningful. At the start, there's plenty of time, why hurry? Later, you're clenching your teeth at past dead ends and wondering if its too late.

The artwork might not be everyone's cup of tea. I find it jarring and disorienting at times, but the text is still solid and the formatting keeps it together, so I think one can make allowances. For me, the effect matches up with the plot and the feeling when the title of the adventure was uttered.

I can smell the breath of the words.
