Hey all- Kurt Wiegel of Game Geeks here.
I remember all of the Lone Wolf books very fondly- they got me through a lot of years where gaming was very thin. When Mongoose started publishing the d20 Lone Wolf products I was very excited- it was a great way to get back into that world. The newer Lone Wolf uses the same basic engine that the game books did- Combat Skill, Endurance and Kai disciplines. Further supplements opened the doors for other character types: Magocrats of Dessi, Brothers of the Crystal Star, Knights of Sommerland etc. One thing lacking in all of these though were specific, focused information on nations and regions of Magnamund.
This product fixes that: a very well designed, focused book on Sommerlund, the home nation of the titular hero. Almost every facet of the nation is explored: commerce, import/exports, significant NPCs, etc. One of the coolest things about this book though is the near absence (a random number generator and combat resolution table in the very back) of any game-stats. This makes the book eminently usable for any game system you’d like to do Lone Wolf adventures in.
The only criticism I could lay at this book is that the nation is clearly high fantasy and the White Hats of the world. There seems to be nothing rotten in Holmgard. While this fits the source material perfectly, it may not be for everyone, especially for those who prefer political maneuvering, darker fantasy or moral grayness.
I really like this product. It’s very easy on the printer, has good maps of the nation and major cities, and can be used for almost any game system you want.
