Ironhill Citadel: Virtual Boxed Set©

This is a HUGE map set. It includes a number of areas of the Ironhill Citadel like the Merchant District, Lord District, Citizens' District, and several others. You can print these in sections or as the entire map. Like the other Oone's Blueprints sets you can get wireframe versions, versions with overlayed items/terrain, and a host of other options. This is just massive and quite frankly is a great map to use as a city-state in Dark Sun. With the number of options and huge overall size, this is well worth the $20.

This is a great supplement if you or your PCs are interested in running a campaign centered around war. The overall design is nicely put together, though the page borders can be a bit much at time. This certainly doesn't detract from content though. There are about 80 pages of content giving some nice background and plot hooks for running a campaign as well as full encounters, new monsters, powers, feats. If you have a lot of PCs who are into martial classes, this would be a great supplement for your campaign.

Outbreak: Undead

I'm going to admit that this book deserves a much longer review. It is 400 pages chock full of information. That being said, it is pretty rules intense. Much like a zombie outbreak, it isn't for the faint of heart. I haven't gotten to run a full game as I need to convince my group that I have a handle on it and it isn't tough. The best part is that the rules are so explicit that the GM can actually play the game (with a few minor caveats). The idea is realism here though. You can make yourself as your character to see if you would survive. Don't know your stats? No worries, just go to their website and fill out the 40 question survey. BOOM! Stats are done. Choose your skills, your equipment, and you're ready to go.

Without getting into mechanics, the basic gist is choose an objective for your party. This could be get to a certain waypoint in a certain amount of time. Secure a stronghold of X number of points. I'll get to that. Once you assign an objective, the players choose missions to go on that can secure various resources. Sometimes it is weapons, food, supplies, information, routing zombies from the area, etc. As you accumulate resources, rescue people, and accumulate knowledge, your stronghold (safe house of some sort) becomes stronger and able to withstand larger zombie attacks. So when you say get a stronghold of 40 points, you have a pretty darn good fortress at that point. Because the encounters as parts of missions are random, the GM really only have to control the rolls for what happens after specific amounts of time. Then zombies act according to specific rules, so the GM can just track damage and initiative while playing. Or just divvy it up and share the burden.

I am excited to give this a try. I love zombies and this is my chance to really see if I can survive (at least in this world). It'll take a bit of trial and error on the rules, but in the end, it will be worth it.

Trail of Cthulhu: The Big Hoodoo
Publisher: Pelgrane Press

Buy this book. Ok, let me get my obvious bias out of the way. I was lucky enough to have the author, Bill White, run this scenario for me at PAX East. However, I will say that even before that the premise of this scenario is AMAZING. The investigators play historic figures of some note: Robert Heinlein, Ginny Heinlein, Phillip K. Dick, and Tony Boucher. You investigate the suspicious death of Jack Parsons who died in an explosion in his garage in the 1950s.

Yes, this is Lovecraftian historical fiction. No, you don't have to know anything about these figures or the true history to have a fantastic time playing this game. The story is deep, rich, and engaging. It feels like a something pulled from Hollywood newspapers and then spirals into your usual Cthulhoid craziness. In addition to all the hooks, story line, and hints for running a multi-session vs. one-shot game, you get all the pregens with suggestions on how to play them (or not) and how they know all the other characters.

This is a great scenario to run for folks that aren't Trail of Cthulhu veterans because they can really grab onto the sci-fi personalities that almost any nerd will know. It also doesn't dive too deeply into the Mythos too early, so the players really get to act like real people faced with these situations. Of course, part way through, something clicks and you're acting like a swashbuckling hero of yore. Or maybe that was just me. The Keeper has all the tools to run this smoothly and creatively. So you are all set. Buy this book and run the game. You won't regret it.

Mutants & Masterminds GM's Kit
Publisher: Green Ronin Publishing
by NB N. [Featured Reviewer]
Date Added: 03/28/2011 20:39:10

This one will be a short one folks. First off, the artwork on this bad boy is crazy awesome. Your assumption that the primary use of the GM kit is the handy dandy tables that summarize almost all the numbers you need to run the game. That's obviously useful and I love having it as a PDF over the physical screen.

Now for the surprise. Rather than an introductory adventure, Green Ronin went with a character generator supplement. Character generator you say? Well that's probably just a set of quick start rules that you could get anywhere. WRONG! The generator is an awesome place to create quick PCs on the fly for Con games or a one-shot. You can whip up NPC enemies almost as fast as you can come up with a concept. Choose your options to create what you want or roll randomly on the tables. There are 20 archetypes that start the rolls. Then you get sub-tables from there. Everything from Battlesuits to Weather Controllers are there with plenty of mechanical options which underneath provide flavor for how to play your character. Did you build your own suit? Inherit it? Get it as part of a military experiment? These are the types of choices that lead to different stats, skills, and traits as well as a framework within which your character's personality can shine. The only thing I can't speak to is the balance of the various characters. I would hope they are all roughly equal in power and capability, but it'll take some real world testing to get a definitive answer. This will absolutely make sure I run the game though. It's too easy to get ready and go with whatever superhero world you can come up with.

This track alternates between ambient synthesizer, angelic vocals, plinking strings, and creepy rumbles. If you want a desolate, creepy vibe for a session this works well. It doesn't blast out anything too obvious and your players will probably forget about it until they get quiet and hear the impending doom. I like this for it's utility in a variety of situations when you need something ominous.

A nice track for background music. Wind blows, a fire roars, tavern music plays (Irish sounding jigs and some harpsichord for good measure). Some of the patrons probably need some vitamin C as they have some serious sniffles and coughs. I like that this can fit about any tavern situation and can be used really easily in the background of your session. Definitely a good track for your repertoire.

The Old Ways

Date Added: 01/24/2011 21:03:52

This is a surprisingly vocal heavy track. It starts with almost a female monk chant and transitions to Native American style drums and pan flute. It picks up the pace with more aggressive drums and the haunting vocals. I can't quite pick out the next instrument (either generated fiddle or accordion). Not a bad track at all. It's just not jumping out for any particular situation. Maybe a witch's den or some sort of tribal religious ceremony? Either way, it's worth a listen.

I wanted to give this a 4/5, but it's a bit too overbearing at times. It features very loud ululating type yelling (more Native American, not Middle Eastern). Drums come in with grunts and continued yelling. This one is a lot less useful for a broad array of situations. However, if you have a primitive battle or even a rescue from a sacrifice, then this would be dead on. Just make sure the volume isn't too loud.

Mysterious pan flute and light drums give a mystic impression of a primal tribe. The track is somewhat dark, but not overly so. It would be great for visiting a village that worships the primal spirits and control their magics. It's not going to intrude on your session, so you can loop it and let it go.

The Sunchasers

The track starts out with some very promising bagpipes. It then changes to a trumpet fanfare (a little fake sounding but not distractingly so). About a third of the way through it goes back to the Scottish or Irish feel with drums, flutes, and other wind instruments in jigs and reels that make you think of riding horses through the open glens of the British Isles. This one does go up and down a bit in tone, volume, and tempo, so it may not fit every session. It would work well for traveling and allow for some interesting mood music.

This is a pretty nice track with Native American style drumming that is paced well (not too slow, not too fast), flutes, and strings that come in. It's nice atmospheric music for a village or town setting, maybe even the wilderness. The track is very listenable and non-intrusive, so it's great for background in your session.

Trail of Cthulhu: Not So Quiet
Publisher: Pelgrane Press
by NB N. [Featured Reviewer]
Date Added: 01/24/2011 20:29:22

Yet another successful scenario for Trail of Cthulhu. The players are either injured men/women or posted military personnel in a hospital on the front lines in World War I. Everything is not as it seems as forces move to carry out nefarious plans. The players must do what they can to stop the evil or die trying (or go insane). Filled with flashbacks and scenes for both the injured and the posted, everything converges as the players learn the horrible truth. ToC is an easy system to learn and play. The pregenerated scenarios with characters to boot are a great way to get new players into the game and cut your teeth on a new system. Give it a few reads through and you are ready to go. I love the adventures for ToC because they're always interesting and you always get your money's worth.

I got the hardcopy of this as part of the beta program. The quality is pretty good. The cover is a nice glossy stock with good color. The pages are black and white, but still printed nicely. The adventure is nice for a paragon 4E group. What I like about it is that it isn't only the typical go here and finish this quest type scenario. They integrate a prestige or social standing system where you gain audience with more important people based on your achievements. It gives a good incentive to do more than just beat people up and to organize skill challenges for social interactions leading to a meeting with the Queen of the Shadow Fey. This is something a bit different than many adventures and there is still plenty of hack and slashing to be done. Overall, a nice supplement.

Much like the first volume in the anthology, there are tons of articles on tons of topics. There are character options, DMing tips, tips on player styles, and things to spice up your game. Again, $5 isn't much money for ton of advice on gaming. I like the short articles that are quick reads and interesting.
