It's free, it's stripped down to the essentials of sci-fi roleplaying, and it's concise. This is a framework--there's no DM advice, and a great deal of the roleplaying elements are left up to the referee to make up (trading, for example, as a previous reviewer has mentioned)....and that's 100% OK. If you need something weightier, get Cepheus Light or the full-blown version.
You really can't complain about a free product that simply and effectively does exactly what it advertises....and best of all, no death at character creation. ;)

Thanks for the review!
Oh, and you CAN die in character creation. That what happens when you fail a survival roll. ;-) |

Blech. This is a series of sci fi "missions" generated by a random event/plot generator. Each page has the (very) rough outline of an adventure, then that bare framework expanded upon with attempts at narrative.
Editing was poor, grammar was sub-par, and ideas were.....odd, to say the least.
It's tough to mash together concepts that really shouldn't be blended, yet Ennead Games attempted exactly that, with bland and/or bizarre outcomes.
I gave up at the "mission" where a data courier is being stalked by an over-friendly AI. The AI thinks it's making friendship overtures, but the courier feels the AI is infringing on his life in a seriously bad way. Then a bad-guy's daughter wants to steal data from the AI, too.
It just doesn't really make sense, and when you're trying to Boldly Go Where No One's Gone Before, silliness just doesn't help.
Had I dropped more money into this, I would have asked for a refund.

I'm only a few pages in, but I can tell this is going to be incredibly helpful.
Exactly as it says "on the tin", these are (approx) 1-page mini adventures / scenario ideas / side quests. The ones I've read are a trifle too deadly for beginning characters, but then again I've barely scratched the surface of the 52 adventure seeds here, so it's entirely possible that lower HD creatures are in the spotlight later in the book.
This isn't a reinvention of the wheel, but so far the ideas are fun, the grammar seems to be on-point, and it's got ideas that can be expanded upon fairly easily.
Awesome!

A quick PDF (just a few pages), but if this is what we can expect from Little Red Goblin's vision of Barsoom, this is in good hands.
You get stats to make a Green Martian as a playable race, a few pages on "Pathfinder-izing" E R Burroughs' Mars (changes that need to be made--including races and classes, money, psionics, and a quick word about firearms), stats for a thoat, and a few Martian-specific feats.
It's quick'n'dirty, but in 8 pages this product made me happy.
I hope to see more, as I'd fork over money for additional products in this line.
And the cover? Look at that kick-arse cover!!!

The bulk of the product is written for the Dark Avenger (which is another Prestige Class within this same line of Lost Classes products).
By this I mean that the exact write-up, powers, BAB and special abilities--INCLUDING THE TERM "Dark Avenger"--is copied/pasted into the bulk of the Crescent Occultist article. (I know this because I have the Dark Avenger PrC as well....and it's a copypasta job.) There is, in fact, no spellcasting whatsoever in this PrC (as advertised in the product's advertisement blurb).
Until the text is corrected to feature an actual "crescent occultist" PrC, skip this product and just get the Dark Avenger instead.
Disappointing that no-one's caught this mistake after all this time.

I'm not an experienced reviewer, so if I don't "do it right" sorry ahead of time.
This is a 7 page PDF intended (I believe) primarily for DMs. It provides background details--some amusing, some unusual--for NPCs (or PCs, really--there's no reason a player couldn't use these write-ups). The background details are typically "dirty little secrets" or skeletons in closets that the character in question doesn't want anyone to know about. They attempt to add spice and nuance to what might be a vanilla or less-than-memorable character. Many of them are cliché (some worse than others), but that's not always a bad thing when dealing with fantasy tropes.
These dirty secrets run little more than a paragraph or two, and there's 5 per page.
The author clearly does not have English as his first language, so there are a few spelling gaffes and odd sentence structures. These do NOT hinder understanding; they aren't so cryptic that you can't easily figure out what the author is trying to get across. It might have been nice to have an (English-speaking) editor make a quick pass through the document, however. (I'm not a professional editor, but I have a solid command of the English language if the author ever wants to contact me to do some free, quick editing work.) :)
The thing is, for 79 cents you pretty much can't go wrong. Even if I use even one or two of the dirty secrets in my game, I feel I'll have gotten my money's worth from the product.
Is it outstanding? No. Is it average but at a dirt-cheap price? Hell yeah.

Matthew Barlow wrote an accurate and enthusiastic review for this product, and I fully agree with his assessment.
I'd like to briefly add that this adventure could be used with other game systems that have a noir / pulp feel: Malay Coins, with little effort, can be modified for use in the Eberron (Dungeons and Dragons) setting very easily, for example!
It's an inexpensive and well-written adventure with suggestions for expansion/modification at the end of each section--you can't go wrong with this scenario!

Even better than Archtype Archive #1, this included many of the more popular archtypes from recent movies ( cough FF/X2 cough). 10 awesome archtypes for a great price, I'd gladly pay for additional PDFs like this if the quality remains consistant!

LIKED: Everything...what's not to like? There are obvious nods to Mr Fantastic (Reed Richards), Nightcrawler and Wolverine....and at PL10, not some overblown PL25 templates! I was overjoyed to see these included.
More, please, ASAP! :)

DISLIKED: The archtypes (from both #1 & #2) weren't included in the M&M2ed dead tree format.

QUALITY: Excellent

VALUE: Very Satisfied
