So.....I am finally getting around to reviewing my purchases on Drivethru. i ain't very long winded, nor do I mince words. Been gaming since 1978 so I've ran a lot, played a lot and seen a lot, but by no means am I anything but a novice in this grand adventure called gaming. New is interesting as well as old. I keep an open mind and open pages towards games. Geist is a World of Darkness game that doesn't really need to be integrated into the Vampire, Werewolf, Wraith or Mage biome. It ain't Wraith, but it is easily confused until you open the first page. Geist deals with a lot about life and death and what happens between and after. It is its own language, dialect, accent. It doesn't belong anywhere else in the World of Darkness. It is a world of hope and despair and the places in between, and I am ok with that. Sin Eaters are those who deal with and guide or destroy aberrance in the After. There are serious powers going on here, used by ghosts and skills kind of link you to what you were good at in the past, and this is a plot device and character hook that makes GMs squee with excitement. You give the GM power to use you and your story. Better yet, those left behind are a tool for the Gm to emply for good or ill, in your unlife. I really enjoyed this game and it got my mind to working, which is a good thing. There is a lot of potential here that I haven't found that much in the other WOrld of Darkness games, to be honest. They are great games, don't get me wrong. They are also resting in fiction and a smattering of reality used to put you where your character lives. Geist the Sin Eaters IS reality. Death comes for us all, but can we outlast it and help others find their personal triumphs or eradication from all energy? The story is open and begs to be told.

Danny

I ran this quickstart adventure at a local gaming meetup with a varied group. Some had never role-played before. Others had role-played but had never played a horror game before. Others still had role-played, had never played a horror game before, and really disliked White Wolf games. (Why they decided to come play Geist with me I have no idea. Sometimes gamers are just weird, you know?)

Anyway, by the end of the afternoon, everyone was very enthused about the game, including those that didn't like White Wolf games!

In Geist, the players portray people who have died and been brought back to life by an unholy pact with a powerful and alien ghost called a Geist. This Geist has a particular resonance with types of problems/issues/deaths, depending on how it (and the player character) died. As a result, the characters are drawn into ghostly affairs and compelled to resolve them if they want to continue living. They also have issues with respect to how they are treating their "second chance" at life, everything from sybaritic pleasures to gloomy contemplation. A good variety of possible character motivations is presented in the sample PCs.

The scenario is quite straightforward. There's a killing! The police are stumped. The Sin-Eaters must step in, recognizing the signs of ghostly interference. There are three significant plot points: a set of interactions with the dead and the police, in order to gather information, a research and investigation section in which the mystery is developed and the bad guy is tracked, and finally a face-off in which the Sin-Eaters must defeat a powerful and nasty ghost. It's a perfect length for an afternoon of play, even with those that have never played White Wolf games before. At the end of it, you feel like you've accomplished something and seen something of the World of Darkness even if you've only played a few hours.

The powers the characters have are quite evocative. People liked being able to look at their sheets and get excited about the weird things they could do.

On the down side, the character sheets in the quickstart are very small and not very usable. I ended up creating my own full-sized character sheets based on the ones in the quickstart. The players also muttered that the bad guy didn't turn out to be so tough, though I didn't agree with this - teamwork is such a huge force multiplier in the World of Darkness system that really virtually no bad guy stands a chance against 4-5 motivated player characters.

All in all, I was very excited about this quickstart, and in the end it made me go and get the print version! That means it's doing it's job.

The book begins by outlining the basic premise of the game. Individuals in the throes of a near-death experience encounter a 'geist' - a shade, an entity prepared to return the individual to life... for a price. That price begins with allowing the geist in, to become entwined with your lifeforce, but it doesn't stop there. Sometimes the geist wants something else, and it won't stop mithering until it gets it. Welcome to the 7th game in the New World of Darkness, where you tell the story of one of these individuals who survived beyond all the odds, but at what a cost!

After the usual brief obligatory 'what is a role-playing game' explanation, there's an outline of how the Storyteller game mechanic works and what's on the character sheet. While there's enough for you to play this cold, it probably would help if one person at least is familiar with the core New World of Darkness system. There is also a summary of the archetypes that Sin-Eaters, as those unfortunates bound to a geist are known, tend to fall into, as it's assumed for the purposes of this demo game that the characters are already in that situation, rather than having played through gaining a geist. All the geists are of necessity unhappy with the manner of their original demise and are looking for their new best friend to help them sort things out... usually with violence. So the geist of someone killed in a gang war will be out for vengeance against the rival gang and so on. But that's not the only motivation, others realise that as death is inevitable you've got to live life to the full, others seek to be intermediaries between this world and the next, and so on. The nature of the near-death experience also affects the Sin-Eater's approach to his new life, as it influences the nature of geist attracted. There's quite a lot of other stuff to get your head around as well, it is recommended that all potential players have time to study these introductory notes before the game or they may be a bit baffled as to what is going on!

Next comes the adventure, 'The Return of Mr. Monster.' In this, it is assumed that the characters are already acquainted with each other, and have formed a group in the Bronx neighbourhood of New York. The story is based around a hunt for a murderer whose acts mimic those of a serial killer of some 30 years ago. In style, it is a fusion of a ghost story and an action thriller. It's neatly arranged into interlinked scenes, and depending on character actions the sequence can be varied as appropriate. Each is well described with atmospheric descriptions, likely events and notes on what the Storyteller's and the characters' objectives are at this point. The main NPCs present and what they will be doing is also laid out clearly. The key thing to remember is that every ghost is there because he wants something. Find out what that is, offer it, and that ghost will likely cooperate with you!

The adventure concluded - with a few suggestions if you decide to use it as a starting point for your own campaign - the player-characters are presented in detail. Plenty of background information is provided, but it's slightly jumbled in that notes for more than one character appear on the same page, so you'll end up cutting it up to give each player the appropriate information. The character sheets are reduced size, not full page, so they'll need good eyesight too!

It is an interesting concept nicely presented, showing clear potential to develop into a unique take on 'ghosts' within the World of Darkness - well worth a try.

This didn't thrill me. I can see the potential but as a teaser for a game system it falls flat. with all the ability to interact with ghosts in the other three venues what is present here doesn't show anything new or special concerning what giest might bring to the table, or what would be truly and uniquely different about roleplaying this as opposed to say a changling with a particular durance, or one of any of the number of necromancy based vampire bloodlines
