Still an excellent Old School RPG. The best thing is the atmosphere which is eerie and dark. The rules are light and creating a character takes about 5 minutes. There's a lot of official material available and the community is still a vibrant and creative one (look for it on Discord). A highly recommended game for everyone who wants to play in a pseudo medieval world of folklore and evil barons!

An excellent book. I've the original Dragonwarriors RPG books which was published in the 80's in paperback. This new edition is a faithful reproduction of the original with some new abilities added for most of the character classes. It has also been reorganized and is now more consistent. My only disapointment is that the timeline (as presented in this new edition) is still fixed at the same time as the original version. 30 years is not a long time in a medieval context but it is still enough time for a new generation to arise. There should have been some (minor) changes in the game world of Legend. Other than that, this is an excellent introduction to the Dragonwarriors RPG.

This is just a great game, period. There's really nothing about Dragon Warriors that I don't like. If you've seen my review of QAGS you may assume that I'm strictly a "rules-lite" kind of person who dislikes the old-shool, unique-system-for-everything style of game, but you'd be wrong. I actually enjoy the fact that there is no unifiying mechnic as the individual systems do a nice job of covering their niches. Legend as a setting is amazing. The rules are simple direct and take care of business without a lot of mucking around. You could easily memorize the bulk of what you need to know after reading it and playing a test adventure. Just an all-around great game.

Dragon Warriors is a very good game that has finally made it to my collection from across the pond. Iwould have played this one back in the day if I knew that it existed then.

Well presented, solid system, consistently roll low on 1d20, with extensive magic choices. It should be noted, however, that the game is a very mild rework of an older edition, consolidating much of the material from 6 novel-sized books into the core. • The classes are not D&D knock offs as much as classic medieval archetypes for adventure fiction. Knights and Barbarians are the combat monsters. Barbarians include vikings, mongols, and moors.... Assassins from the Middle East ply their craft of killing for hire. 4 different magic user flavors using a common mechanic provide a good starting point. • The critters included are a goodly selection, tho' not well illustrated in this book. They are detailed enough to give the flavor of Legend. They are statted much like PC's, so if one wants to personalize them, it's easy. • The layout will print nicely, since it's mostly black on white, and clear, well indexed text. Looks great on a Sony PRS505, tho a bit small on that screen. • The system is being supported by Magnum Opus; this isn't James Wallis' first "resurrection" of a beloved game. We can look forward to worthy expansion, and as with his prior work, he shows he respects the system by making only a few minor changes.

A product written with heart and soul, Dragon Warriors is a fantasy role-playing game that is of light to medium crunch, easy to learn and comes with a deep setting that is rooted in our own historical world. If you have read Blood Swords game-books and digs its background, then rejoice, for the world of Legend is indeed the setting for Dragon Warriors.

The rules are straightforward; either it is percentile based or a simple roll under, usually in the form of rolling D20 under your Attacking Stat - your opponent's Defending Stat. Classes are varied - knights, barbarians, sorcerer, mystics, warlocks, assassins and elementalists - each with a different feel to them. Knights are the disciplined fighter, while barbarians are more nimble and savage in their attacks.

Sorcerers use spells which are "shock and awe" but has very poor combat skill. Mystics fare better in hand to hand but their spells are milder and more of a support nature. Elementalists have some ad-hoc magic abilities but their formulaic spells are wide in scope and have applications for roleplaying. The warlock is a warrior-mage combination who can cast two 'buff' spells per round. The assassin is the thief/rogue of the mix.

This game was written in the 1985 to 1986, and the text is casual, conversational and interesting. It does not read like a dry technical manual which many core rulebooks have become, nor is it overloaded with fluff that you can't discern rules from flavor text.

Arguably, the setting is what make Dragon Warriors different from the pack. The world of Legend, as noted, is based on our historical world. There are many common elements, and what probably is fantastic and mythic in our world is real in Legend (those are hints, rather than a direct parallel). Not be mistaken for Ars Magica's Mythic Europe, the world of Legend is familiar because it borrows elements from our own, but at the same time different the treatment it takes for each of them.

Ellesland, a medieval parallel of England, is given the most spotlight and attention. It is a feudal kingdom and the social structure is well explained in the background material. The setting also includes exotic write-up of Mungadoa, the new Selentine Empire and many more. If you have read the Blood Sword books, many of those names would sound familiar.

In term of completeness, you can run Dragon Warriors without any other supplement. A minimal bestiary is given - stats are there but most of the fluff text removed. There is an introduction adventure, ideas for your own campaign and the familiarity the setting means that one would have no problem of dreaming of adventures and encounters.

The "old school" revolution, as typified by Castles & Crusades and other games, is really synonymous with various "classic" versions of D&D. Dragon Warriors belongs to the old school style, but is unique in that it has nothing to do with D&D. Dragon Warriors is an incredibly simple, quick, and flavorful British RPG that is perhaps the best introductory RPG I've ever come across. The character creation guides you through a very easy process whereby you can easily generate a character in 10-15 minutes. The game is class-based as opposed to skill-based. The classes are slightly more specific than most D&D clones; instead of a generic fighter you get a knight. Instead of a rogue you get an assassin. There are four spellcasting classes and a barbarian as well. I like the classes, but do have to say that they are quite unbalanced (the barbarian has virtually nothing to look forward to once you get past rank 1). Combat is very fast and extremely deadly (three good blows will drop you). Spells are a bit unbalanced as well; I am seriously thinking of changing some of the rankings of the lower level spells to higher level. The default setting is the dark and very "authentic"-medieval Lands of Legend (think medieval England with a bit of Harn crossed with Warhammer). Perhaps the thing I most enjoy about Dragon Warriors is that I feel I can house rule it to my heart's content without throwing the rest of the rules seriously out of whack (I'm looking at you D&D 4e...). Dragon Warriors is a delight -- easy, fast, colorful, and well worth your florins. And the artwork is terrific.

This is an excellent game. Although I'm not 100% satisfied with the content, I find it a nice step away from the "MMOs for the tabletop" that fantasy RPGs have been transforming into. The rules are easily-followed, despite not being a unified mechanic, and the classes are versatile while still being well-defined.

Pros: Long-played game with massive fan support (the webpage has links to a lot of the fan support out there). Detailed Medieval setting, with a strong patina of magic and supernatural, but also not a 1-for-1 correlation to real world places or events. Grim setting, but not absurdly so (as in many other RPGs). Rules play easily, smoothly, and well.

Cons: System may be a turn-off for some modern gamers. Setting may be a turn-off for people used to more sparkly fantasy settings. More importantly, although very detailed the game's detail is a bit lopsided - this isn't too serious, but there are a few somewhat annoying thin spots in the details of the setting. The fan support covers many of these, but it's still a bit obnoxious.

Overall Satisfaction: High, but not the highest.
