Was looking for a table top RPG that could truley capture the esscence of being in a horror film. I'm so glad i found Slasher Flick!

Just played my first game of Slasher Flick and it was great!

This is a rules-light game with a very simple yet engaging dice mechanic that was very easy to pick up and learn and did an amazing job of capturing the feeling of playing through an 80s slasher movie. Normally I'm a bit slow to take to new game rules but I got my copy of Slasher Flick on a Monday and was playing a game where I felt fully comfortable with the rules by that Wednesday.

I've read some other comments that some purchasers weren't fans of the art but I loved it. It's fairly simple black and white art throughout but having been a fan and player of RPGs in the 80s that was another element that really drew me back and put me in that time period.

Overall I would highly recommend Slasher Flick to anyone who wants to play their way through an 80s slasher film experience. It's a great game that emulates the genre amazingly well and my group and I had a blast playing it.

This is an excellent product. It's a perfect fit for the genre and the mechanics are well designed and light. Recreates the feel of the movies better than reasonably expected. #1 choice for creating your own slasher story together.

We play this as a one off in between the Barbarians of Lemuria campaign we are involved in. It is simple and fun...really catching the vibe. Great for novices too.

Pros: Spectrum Games and genre emulation go hand in hand. The book is painstakingly designed to place you within the archetypal horror film with all the good, bad and cheesy that entails. The rules support the genre conventions, such as rewarding the player for acting stupidly in character, and even giving the "final girl" a bonus to ensure that she makes it to the end of the film...(as "final girls" often do").

Cons: Much of the art isn't impressive. The version of the PDF that I saw seemed a bit heavy on the ink, due to a large, black border the runs along the top and sides of the pages.

Overall: This is one of those games that I read and it made me really, REALLY want to play. I think, especially with some kind of board-game like visual representation, you could convince some of the more open-minded non-gamers to give it a shot, and possibly find some converts.

Building a role-playing game where the PCs are slasher movie victims seems like a loosing cause. Very rarely do you tell players at the beginning of an RPG that all but one or two of their characters will die. With Slasher Flick, Cynthia Celeste Miller and Spectrum Games cut through the challenge and created a simple and gory RPG system that addresses obvious problems.

Slasher Flicks starts off with an introduction to the Slasher Film genre for the uninitiated. It’s a historic journey into the bloody killer movies that made the genre what it is complete with Miller’s personal commentary on each film. After a the intro, it moves into the chunks of the system.

The system starts off with a unique dice rolling system. I certainly have not come across it in my gaming years. Instead of trying to get a unique number by adding stats and rolls, every player instead rolls 4 dice. You score a success for every 2 dice that match. Stats are kept simple, with only 4 trait stats that are either poor, good or normal. This determines which four of what die you will roll. Players also choose qualities that add an extra dice to the roll. The matching system has a higher rate of failure that the traditional meet this benchmark system, which works very well in a horror movie where the players play average folk (or below average) in a dire situation.

Throughout the game, players play both their primary character and secondary characters. This avoids the big problem of a character dying too soon and then watching the rest of the game. Players want to try to avoid death from their primary characters by earning Survival points by avoiding calamitous situations. Even if you are doing bad on the survival end of things, playing up on Genre Tropes can earn you genre points that can alter rolls, create situations or perform special abilities.

The centerpiece of the system is its Kill Scenes, which put the players in situations that they have to describe through storytelling and creativity as they are faced with the killer.

For the Players If you love the horror genre, this will be a great evening of fun. The system finely weaves climatic story telling with player input.

For the Director Not having to detail a big bad with tons of numerical stats allows the director to focus more on creating a solid movie outline for the players. It was quite a relief. Instead the killer is made up of character background blocks called components.

The Iron Word Slash Flick is perfect for a popcorn and pretzels night of gaming. The die rolling system fits the horror genre like a glove and the simplistic stats system makes for more emphasis on role-playing instead of roll playing. It handles keeping all players in the game the best it can for a genre RPG, but it still takes the right type of attitude from the players. Especially if they know that, regardless, at least three quarters through only half the players will still be playing the game.

Slasher Flick takes what you like about the genre and puts into a tabletop game. You will have fun making victims and creating ways to get them killed. The rules of the game are easy to learn and will not take too long to get used to. My gaming group had fun with this game and that is what it's all about. If you like the slasher flick genre you should play this game.

Reading this game is a pleasure. Miller clearly knows and loves the genre and a lot of time and care has been put into this book. The advice section for the Director is helpful advice for any GM. The player advice chapter, though it contains no rules, should be considered an integral part of the game. I would encourage all the players to read and absorb it, because it, in effect, lays out the terms of the implict contract between players and GM in a game like this. The subject matter is certainly R-rated and you would not want to play this game with anyone who is not comfortable watching a violent horror movie, yet there is nothing really shocking or offensive in the text, which is a testimony to the light touch of the designer. Personally, I lean towards the traditional side of the playstyle spectrum and some of the cooperative storytelling elements of Slasher Flick are not normally to my taste. But halfway through reading this, I just really wanted to get it out on the table. The text makes you want to play the game.

The rules in Slasher Flick are a clever blend of light, task-based mechanics framed by story-based timing mechanics all decorated with genre-emulating flourishes. The end result is a top notch RPG, beautifully designed to put the tension, thrills and gore of a slasher movie onto the game table. I recommend it for anyone who is a fan of the genre, a student of genre emulation in RPG's or someone who just appreciates good game design. This would make a great one-shot for halloween or at a con. It surprises me the little recognition Cynthia Celeste Miller gets. Cartoon Action Hour: Season 2 is one of the most original and elegant games of 2008. With Slasher Flick, she has done it again, in an entirely different genre. Let's hope she and Spectrum Games will generate a bit more noise in 2009 because it is well deserved.

If you're looking for an RPG to recapture your childhood fixation on masked serial murderers, this game hits all the wickets, and does so in style. It is the epitome of a game tailor-made to fit a genre. From the collaborative character creation system to the detailed tropes to the GM assistance, this game truly has a grasp of its source material. The interior artwork is exceptional and evocative, and captures everything that slasher movies are about. To try to find an analog for comparison, it's like Tarrantino's movies turned into games, lampooning and validating schlock film while simultaneously setting the bar higher for followers to come.

Highly recommended.

Slasher Flick is a great game that offers a lot more than just a game. It does exactly what it wants to do in emulating the slasher horror sub-genre into a very playable pen and paper experience. The "kill scene" mechanic is truly inspired and will be really fun to play with and toy around with mechanically. The book is also a great guide for just being a GM in dealing with mature themes (sex, violence, etc.). For its cost, it delivers a great game along with great advice.
