Hero Kids - Fantasy RPG
Publisher: Hero Forge Games
by Joe J. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 04/17/2016 17:11:24

If I start out with "my 5 year old loves this game," you will forgive my lack of originality. The simple dice-pool mechanics, printable maps and paper figurines engage his imagination while the hero and monster cards fit into what he has seen in video games. Sure, the advantages of ranged-vs.-melee combat elude him and we sort of fudge movement rates, but he has fun!

WSS001: Star Gods Help Us
Publisher: Small Niche Games
by Joe J. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 09/21/2015 12:25:11

Observers of pop culture from the 60s, 70s and 80s should recognize the inspiration for the twelve new classes contained within. Some of these go together thematically very well, like the zombie-like Zeddines and the butler like Gurches. For those players less concerned with achieving missions and more interested in silliness, a party of Radiobuddies, Gloops and Giltors will have trouble just getting organized to leave their own ship.

This collection strongly evokes a lot of the sci-fi silliness found in abundance within the pages of Dragon magazine and TSR's early catalog. The content and illustrations within this supplement are pitch-perfect. At $2.99, the PDF is a non-brainer.

Fever-Dreaming Marlinko
Publisher: Hydra Cooperative
by Joe J. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 07/10/2015 20:04:12

Marlinko is a bit of a gonzo (but still very playable) urban setting that should appeal to players looking for a location with plenty of adventure hooks.

The town of Marlinko is divided into four quarters, the people of which have distinctive habits and biases. Centered around an ancient tomb that houses the Gods of the city, about whom few know anything definite, Marlinko is home to several distinctive characters who may drive the campaign into new and unexpected places.

On the edge of ambient Chaos, the town is prone to periods of riotous lunacy that may challenge the longevity of low-level players.

The softcover edition properly showcases the wonderful production of this work. It is worth the money to have the physical copy of this unique and spirited Labyrinth Lord supplement.

The Lizardmen of Illzathatch

This is a fun little adventure for the casual old school RPGer that will last 1-2 game sessions. Mercifully light on background, this dungeon can be slapped onto almost any campaign with little effort. Small though it is, the dungeon has plenty of surprises for the careless party.

Although designed for a 3rd level party, a carefully armed and experienced party of 1st-2nd level characters could probably succeed here too.

The Tomb of Sigyfel
Publisher: Goblinoid Games
by Joe J. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 01/02/2014 20:15:03

This one page-ish adventure is really cuts to the meat of Old School RPG. While it is a module for novice adventurers, it is clearly not an introductory module that holds the game master's hand. That's a Good Thing. This little dungeon can be inserted into almost any other place you need a side quest. And the price? You can't bet it.

Dan Proctor is known for his rulebooks, but he's got module designer chops to boot.
