LaserStorm 2nd edition

This edition is definitely a far more mature game, in that it is better organized and more complete than the first edition. More difficult aspects of the rules, such as air support, were sidestepped in the first edition, but here are completely engaged. And the complete rules for both unit design and campaigns are wonderful, allowing a full range of science fiction unit types from the small to the ludicrously oversized, but without being arbitrarily tacked on. It allows a lot of character in the game, where a lot of designs these days stop at the level of "it's all numbers, what's the difference," different unit types and sizes feel definitively different and there's opportunity for a great deal of variety and flavor that carries over to syles of play that the special rules encourage. At the basest level, too, the rules are much easier to read and the layout is extremely pleasant to look at, an often overlooked part of game design, and the whole book is very well organized. A very good edition and definitely a night-and-day improvement over the first edition.

A very good update to the original with somewhat more granularity and a more flexible system for assembling your units. I was sorry to see the Momentum System and the scenario generator go, but the gains have been worth it, I think. Strongly recommend the print version - there's no comparing to holding the book in your hands.

One of my go-to sci fi games, and lets you comfortably command very large scale forces. My personal favorite method is multiple 3mm scale vehicles and infantry squads on platoon bases, letting me command forces up to a regiment in size with no problem. with a little time and a larger play area, you could have divisions clashing on a large front - a scale few game systems, with the current glut of skirmish games, are brave enough to tackle.

Very much a product of its time, it has a lot in a small package but as others have noted it cant quite decide if it's a game or a simulation. Particularly frustrating is the lack of basic information about the units included, like what kind of mobility they use (if you play Traveller, you "ought to know already" I suppose?), or any kind of baseline "average" stats for vehicle or infantry from which one might extrapolate a list of weapons or equipment when designing one's own (using the head-cracking sustem in Fire, Fusion and Steel). It makes an interesting read but translating it into tabletop play has been too problematic, when more effective systems like Dirtside or Strike Legion Tactical exist.

Strike Legion: Planetary Operations Revised Edition
Publisher: Legionnaire Games
by A customer [Verified Purchaser]

This game is a very good medium between the sophistication of Strike Legion Tactical and the plainness of a strategic boardgame where each unit would just be a counter. The scale is (nominally) one inch equals a kilometer and stand equals one company, and the standard unit is a battalion of two to four companies, organized into a brigade or regiment of several battalions (three to five is about right). Each battalion can have detachment stands added which enhance its abilities - add a scout, and you get an electronic warfare bonus in an assault. Add artillery and your ranged fire gets a bonus. Airpower is included via "air markers," which represent airstrikes of varying intensity, although maneuvering air units on the table is limited to V/STOL attack craft and transports, and for those so inclined, airships and aeronefs. There are even rules for orbital strikes and tactical nuclear weapons.

You have to be pretty flexible about how you see the game, as it's definitely not a hardcore simulator of the FFT3 variety, but it feels unique and flexible and has a broad range of options to make the game your own. I especially like the various frameworks for campaigns, and the game as a whole works particularly well with scaled battlefield maps and 3mm scale figures, feeling very much like a Command Post exercise. I highly recommend it to gamers looking for a higher-level game that has a good balance between granularity and abstraction.
