This is an excellent and unique approach to the fantasy genre, you'll need the Sanction rules, but this flavours things with just the right amount of setting and mechanics, along with a learn-as-you-go journey through a series of dungeon rooms.

The writing is evocative and economic, nothing is described more than it needs to be, making this a joy to read and quick to implement and hack to your own delights. I'm now very excited to tell my own stories in the land of .GIF.

Oh, and that acronym chef's kiss!

Viral: A Modern Call of Cthulhu Scenario
Publisher: Chaosium
by Jim M. [Verified Purchaser]

A magnificent, atmospheric scenario. Viral is set in modern times, using the tropes of streaming, multimedia and a roving myth busting team to bring the gradual horror into sharp focus.

The pre-gens are detailed and comprehensive, giving room for players to have a lot of fun. The scenario itself starts off light, even playful, before events and scenes begin to darken the mood and up the growing sense of unease on the main location.

Having played the scenario over two four hour sessions I can vouch for how much fun this was with the well-developed pre-gens, the multiple layers of running a stream, investigating a location, reacting to events with input from the viewers and then gradually all bets are off as events takeover.

I am extermely impressed with the detail and support given to GMs in running this scenario, from maps, pre-gen backgrounds and advice on running as a one-short versus a longer series of sessions. Loads of great art that sets the tone and makes this a high quality product.

Overall, this is an excellent modern Call of Cthulhu scenario which takes a unique concept and aligns it with a fantastic location, dripping with atmosphere and gradually introduces small shocks that ramp up into mind-shattering revelations! Loved it!

This is an excellent short, one-shot story game that packs a lot of detail into it's two pages. Myself and my son had a lot of fun creating an assassin, deciding on the mission, complications and advantages.

An example of play, my son was a freelance assassin, I decided his next target was his old mentor, but the complication was that the mentor was in an old people's home. My son took ownership of this by saying he was his next of kin and had put him there and paid for his stay, therefore he gained an advantage. The next complication was that the Assassin's identity must remain unknown, there are CCTV cameras all over the old folks home...

And so it went on, it's very fluid, simple but can create some really memorable twists and turns as you play through. For a PWYW game, there is great thought that has gone into this and it's very deserving of your $1 if not a few more. Looking forward to more games from the author...

Full Fathom Five: Call of Cthulhu

Managed to read through this on holiday, such a richness of detail and so much support for the Keeper to run this in multiple ways with advice for the size of the group and how to adjust the scenario for them. Really high quality writing, combined with fantastic graphics, handouts make this one of the top items to purchase on Chaosium's Miskatonic Repository. My only gripe? Where is the audio of Paul, Matt and Scott singing "Roll the Old Chariot Along"? An opportunity sorely missed :)

The Sprawl: Mission Files

Waited for the PoD version, but it was worth it. A really useful set of missions that build in complexity and ideas. As someone new to this game, it's really helped me in appreciating the game mechanics and how the author constructs and runs things as a GM, each section gives thoughts and ideas on how to incorporate into your own campaigns, as well as possibilities in hacking it to build on other themes. The Code Dump section is great in figuring out what type of playbooks work best and one's that don't or if circumstances or tweaks can accommodate it. I was a bit surprised that it did not build on the locations and details in November Metric, but maybe these have been developed in parallel, to be fair the locations are mainly generic and with a bit of thought they could be aligned with November Metric settings. Overall, it's a great addition to The Sprawl cannon, the author strikes a good balance between setting out the details and pathways through the mission, whilst still leaving a lot of openness for improvisation, I think it'll take me a good few games before I'd try something as plate spinningly mad as The Amarylis Protocol, although SPOILER ALERT .... It looks like this could be a set-up for a soon to come supplement??
