Playable as a game, but more importantly, IMO, a great historical reference document for understanding how some of the earliest versions of the game worked.
Solid concept for a retro-clone, well executed. TBE has brought out the full flavour of the old texts -tactical, cinematic and heroic. The dungeon generator and other appendices are a fun and useful addition.
An excellent work in restoring 3LBB and chainmail into a single volume. The author has paid excruciating detail to capturing the essence of 0e. This is well worth your time.
A terrific introduction to a very particular style of D&D. One very strong part of the rules as presented is that only dwarves can wield +3 Warhammers, like Ghal Maraz!
A very tight and neatly presented version of the Od&d rules reintegrating ideas included in the Chainmail supplement with a TBE twist. If I were to introduce the original dungeons and dragons game to modern players this book would do the trick!
I really like how it looks at the full cohesion of Chainmail and the LBB(s). It's nicely laid out and anyone into the early game should find this as a useful reference.
