A fantastic source book with three embedded scenarios. The level of detail and scope are outstanding, covering not just the history and culture of the home islands, but other locations under Japanese influence at the time such as Shanghai and Vladivostok.
The author does a good job covering what could be sensitive real life topics such as the Plague Prevention Laboratory in Manchuria or the attempted assimilation of the Ainu. The biographies (potential NPCs) help a lot in this regard by covering both the good like Chiri Tukie and the bad such as Noguchi Hideyo.
The illustrations alone would be worthy of a college level art history book This is a definitely a title to get in the printed version due to the hundreds of photographs, drawings, maps and reproductions of woodblock prints.
