Consists of four smaller adventures. The first, Wheel of Time, is the weakest: there are some railroady elements; a notorious typo of "goats" when "giants" is meant; however there are some exciting set piece combats. Locksmith is something of a battle of wits, with a potentially nasty ambush by competitors at the end; if the PCs have played well, they might be doing the ambushing. The Evils of Symbolism is a raid for an item, which gets much more difficult if you allow the enemy to raise the alarm; stealth (and swiftly dispatching sentries) is key. Divine Wine is a quest adventure with an excellent revenant encounter. In the last three adventures especially, the odds can be tipped in the party's favour with skilful play.

For some reason p. 31-32 of C3 Lost Island of Castanamir have been included in the pdf, although I don't think any material is missing.

Not in the same league as C1 The Hidden Shrine of Tamoachan, but better than most in the C series. On the basis of the quality of the last three adventures, highly recommended.

Good attempt at an investigative adventure. The mystery is not so complicated that it is too difficult to unravel by deductive reasoning; however what has taken place is sufficiently involved that there is still skill in posing the correct question, even for those aided by divination.

A good edit would improve the product: some information is repeated, some witness statements are very lengthy (and could have been reduced to bullet points). There is also the question of why nobody has ever come looking for any previous missing clients, and why no one has noticed a pile of bodies floating about at a particular location.

Host and Hostility: Three Regency Call of Cthulhu Scenarios

These three lone investigator scenarios make a good contrast with the adventures in (the core) Regency Cthulhu. Some spoilers follow.

Loom and Lucidity. A chance for some comedy and farce as guests begin to express radical opinions (cf Ripping Yarns' Roger of the Raj) before matters take a dangerous turn. (I would have behaviour tend to bawdy, then to brutal.) The investigator needs to destroy the loom to avert disaster. In contrast to the other two adventures, there is a potential love interest, which is highly appropriate for the Austen part.

Curate and Curability. Gothic horror scenario, well clued, but lacks a clever trick by which the character can escape, e.g. some object in the church such as holy water, or a concealed mirror to show a creature its own reflection, that tips the odds. Tending to railroady, and player survival is dependent on a series of good rolls: would prefer more emphasis on player choice at the climax.

Note and Notoriety. A ball climaxes with an attempted transportation, which the player must thwart. A good point is flexibility in finding necessary clues. There are too many rolls when attempting the counterspell for my liking, this could be streamlined. Might work better with a group.

Good attempts at a different sort of scenario. More might be made of the Brighton season, adding some additional social encounters. (There is useful information in an Appendix).

Recommended.

An excellent attempt to mix Call of Cthulhu with Jane Austen. The product includes a detailed Meryton like town, Tarryford, and other close by places of interest. There is a nice Reputation mechanic, to simulate (amongst other things) the characters' chances of making a good match. This review will concentrate on the adventures.

The introductory adventure, the Long Corridor, starts appropriately at a ball, and quickly involves the investigators in the mystery. That something is amiss is immediately apparent, and there are multiple ways to uncover the truth, as well as some flexibility in how to handle clues: player deduction or Intelligence checks. If you use the pregenerated characters, you get all the access you need without difficulty. The Keeper can vary the level of danger, and there is a welcome alternative to a tragic ending. A top class introductory scenario.

The Emptiness Within is a larger adventure, with more exploration and research required. Different approaches are possible, and the dream sequences in the Blasted Forest are a nice touch. There is a good mixture of important character decisions, and making vital rolls. Things may go very badly indeed for Tarryford. A more challenging scenario, a superior effort.

For Austen style matchmaking to take place, having a campaign structure works well. Males seeking wives have a number of choices: Clara and Susan Potterton (who are very similar to the pregenerated Wentworth sisters), possibly Eleanor and Julia Asher. Females seeking husbands are not so well served: George Potterton is a potential partner, but there is a dearth of others. In play I added Lieutenant George Melville, a dashing young officer, one of the admirers of Emma Wentworth (teaching her the use of firearms). The picture pack is an excellent referee aid to run social encounters.

In play, Tarryford (and Diana Williams) were saved, and marriages aplenty: pregenerated characters Captain Stone and Jane Radcliffe, Reverend Jennings and Julia Asher, James Bennett and Clara Potterton, and Emma Wentworth and George Melville.

Highly recommended.

Ambitious (programmed paragraph) solo for a central squad of four, but with plenty of opportunity to add hirelings, and some scehes are played out with specific NPCs. The main theme is thwarting a conspiracy, but there is replay value as many variations in play are possible, with different characters enjoying more time in the spotlight.

To accommodate the many twists and turns there is a complicated system of codewords (and numbers to turn to in event of character death). Players need to take accurate notes. Inevitably in an adventure of this length there are errors and I suggest these should be listed (when spotted by readers) in the comments section for the author to address.

An enjoyable romp with abundant playable material. My favourite part is the social scenes in the Smokewater tavern. I wouldn't suggest this to a novice unless a referee runs the adventure for them as there is much accurate tracking of codewords to be done, and some combats with complicated instructions to play.

Recommended (for veterans). If errors can be ironed out, I would add a star.

A Dragon Warriors dungeon crawl. Well crafted: the backstory is rich enough to be interesting without suffocating detail; varied encounters, some challenging combats, opportunities for intelligent play; the descriptions maintain a tense atmosphere; the dungeon reforms at various points in the adventure, which works well in the programmed paragraphs format; there are chances to settle for a lesser victory if struggling.

Your character is accompanied by the scholar Brother Cuthbert, who looks much like Derek Jacobi.

Accurately written, with working links. Two minor typos spotted: entry 119, 8 lines from end, "diverse" instead of "divers"; entry 130, penultimate sentence, "many" not "man".

In six (!) plays, two complete victories, and an escape.

Highly recommended.

An experiment from this author, as the adventure uses one of two pregenerated characters and is in the style of Fighting Fantasy, with some obstacles only overcome via specific items you must find. It is a superior take on the genre, and skilfully weaves adventures which are suitable for the differing special abilities of a knight and a sorceror into the same tale. There is an innovative shared dream sequence. Better clued than many of this type, although some replays will be inevitable, and possible frustration when your character is in a failure state but play continues.

Accurate links and text. A minor error: misaligned 2 in the title of entry 244. Marley switches from woollen to oilskin trousers, although he may have changed clothes.

Recommended. (Would add a star for a fan of Fighting Fantasy books.)

Innovative escort scenario with a variety of possible outcomes and ways play might unfold. There is a mystery to solve, and plenty of opportunities for superior play. A number of tactics are described for the opposition forces tracking the PCs' group. Not suitable for a novice referee: there is a large cast of NPCs, and several attacks to plan.

A welcome change from the usual sort of low level scenario. This was fun in play. Highly recommended.

Solo adventure for an inexperienced character. An investigation phase followed by a decision on how best to defend the village of Brengate from the Beast. Fairly short, but with a variety of possible paths and endings. Intelligent play gets rewarded. Well (self-)illustrated.

A couple of possible structural improvements: (I) You might evacuate some villagers before the events of entry 49, which now need modification; (II) After evacuating the vulnerable, it makes sense to prepare those left fighting for battle.

A simple fix: End entry 10 with: Otherwise go to 23 to organise the fighters, or return to 110. Entry 110, amend third paragraph. ... Elder Wystan (turn to 72 if you have ticked the second box and want to tell him your plan),...

A more complicated rewriting (possibly with a codeword for the events of 49) could allow more combinations of actions.

Minor corrections: Entry 10 "Some of the women can fight". End entry 12 ... Brengate, turn to 17. Entry 33, second mini paragraph, clarification. ... to a minimum of 1 remaining.

Two wins and a losing retreat in play. Recommended.

Sandbox solo adventure in a region where the balance between good and evil forces can be tipped by PC actions. Very accurately constructed: all the links, codewords, and sequences given certain consitions (such as previous events) seem to work. A welcome feature is freedom of action as well as freedom of movement: you can support either side, and/or undertake minor quests as you see fit. It is important to map as items found in one location may unlock opportunities in others. Generally dynamic, with enough information readily available to keep play moving. Should provide multiple enjoyable plays.

There are a few mini dungeons to explore, and perhaps one of these could have more interesting structure (e.g. secret doors, use of depth/height). A minor error: no box to tick in entry 179 (although there is a box in the Tick List).

A strong product, worthy of study by aspiring writers of programmed solos wishing to avoid a railroad.

Quest for legendary lost Barbarian blades, which the PCs get to wield. Some similarities to X4 Master of the Desert Nomads, as there are a number of exciting set pieces, culminating in the infiltration of an orc city (which is the best part). Somewhat linear, but worth the journey.

Enjoyable solo rescue (or assassination) mission in an asylum. Supports multiple plays, as exploration can uncover useful items/safer routes; there are a number of possible endings. Well illustrated.

A couple of possible corrections/improvements: entry 28, exit to 68, not 168; entry 212, it makes more sense for success to allow you an attempt to open the door (at entry 36).

Highly recommended.

Classical Egyptian flavoured solo adventure, with the usual tropes: a riddle-asking sphinx, a trap-filled pyramid to navigate, hieroglyphics, mummy-like creatures to battle. General structure is linear with branches and loops; there is no need to visit every location, but some items are essential, others very useful, whilst other areas offer only woe. A number of tricky and exciting combats to fight, but some can be avoided; lots of material to play through; some replay value as there are alternative routes between fixed points/through obstacles, although the lack of a second (possibly lesser) winning ending does limit this. One nice touch is that descriptions are given from a medieval European point of view, but the reader knows better and will identify, for example, a camel or a sphinx.

Accurately written. Clear readable type. Adaptable to other systems (with a little work). Plays well with different characters types/professions, although they must be able combatants. Difficult enough that you are likely to fail in an initial play, but not so tough as to become frustrating.

One suggested improvement: in entry 24, as the character is beside a lake, delete references to empty waterskins.

In three playthroughs the Necrochor seemed to be the toughest (unavoidable) opponent. Success with wizards and assassins.

Highly recommended.

Fine attempt at a different sort of solo adventure: murder mystery. Whilst there are multiple routes to the final confrontation, inevitably replay value is limited by knowing the identity of the culprit. (There is still interest in seeking an optimal strategy.) However NPCs are well sketched, clues and red herrings are skilfully laid out, and there is opportunity for logical deducation (e.g. who has an alibi) and elimination of suspects. Little combat until the deadly (extended) finale; could be a relatively quick play (given its length). Accurately and well written; there is a growing air of menace as disappearances start and then bodies turn up.

Few errors: "doughty" not "doubty" in first sentence of entry 51; "committed" not "comitted", second paragraph p.49.

Recommended.

Familiar themes, competently covered. The investigation section is fun, and there are some exciting combats. Whilst some scenes must happen, there are multiple routes between them, giving replay value. Accurately written: in the version I downloaded, only one error found in three plays. (The second option in 60 should read turn to 56, not 171; this may have been corrected in updates.) If I had any criticism, it would be that the mystery and culprits are a little too obvious.
