You know, you are reading an amazing book when the story comparse the resiliance and rubberiness of a sea serpents scales with a regular school meal. (The food doesn't fare too well in the comparison.)
The adventure with a plethora of story hooks promisses a ton of fun. It's clear that this is a work of passion and written with dedication to detail. Amidst flavorful and engaging encounters you can find qquite helpful tips for the director (GM) and the document is very well layed out and invites to reading it.
The "quote" from the beginning tells you already, that we can find a good dose of humor in this ancient tale and I really enjoy the liberties the kids took with the material and their ideas. Not wanting to spoil anything but the story goes into plenty of interesting places and this is only fitting for a They Came From story. Reminds me of the rpgs written a few decades ago as fantasy and science fiction were "still young" and explored all kinds of ideas. What can I say? As a fan of "serious" and dark fantasy I very much enjoyed this more light hearted stpry of brilliant heroes!
Really hope to see more coming from the authors. You rock!

I backed The World Below during the crowdfunding campaign and since then I have been amazed by the world and fascinating creatures. There is much to love about the game.
Just look at the art. I didn't expect to be enthralled like this by the color scheme, that's for sure, but here we are. What stands out for me is the community building aspect of the World Below. Building your own settlement or contributing to an already existing one within an ever changing and hostile enviroment ist amazing. The Kalm phase has dangers and opportunities for your community to offer and it is your job to keep the people alive by bringing ressources, experts and knowledge home. And you can watch this community developing over some time, since there are rules and options for generational play.
I am a forever GM by choice and so I am excited to see a section where you get some options to tune the rules to a certain tone, you might want to go after. You want to emphasize on the theme of Hope? Here are some suggestions. You want to show how grimm, deadly the World Below is? Then tune up these things and adjust these rules, to bring home the message mechanically.
Also highly appreciated are the sample settings, locations to port directly into your game. They provide a quick overview of the larger area, what kind of problems and enemies might be waiting there and then very flavourful descriptions of sites of note, that provide you with events to throw at your players.
You are looking for adventure ideas? There are two pages full of story seeds aside of the ever present ideas within the regular text.
Amongst all the other good stuff in this book, I need to point out the antagonists. Dang, I love them. The World Below is teeming with amazing and horrifying creatures.
I have to end my review at this point, because I really need to set up a gaming group for The World Below. ;)

To be honest, I expected a more carefull approach to the topic at hand. For me the Witch-Finder character feels like an archetype that take an insurmountable amount of historic crimes against inocent people into a playable character option. I spoke to one or two people who made this archetype work for their stories, so I can say at least that. I'd love to see a more nuanced approach.

Hey Tom, I just saw your review so I wanted to take a moment to respond. As a practicing pagan, I have taken an abundance in caution with this supplement. As you can read from the text itself, as well as the product description, the conceit of these archetypes, items, curses, etc., is that they are taken from the ill-gotten confessions of supposed witches during a time in which innocent people were believed to be the mortal servants of Satan. There is a great emphasis on the product--starting with its name--that the contents are centered around the common folklore of witches from the time of the witch trials happening all around the world; think Robert Eggers' The VVitch. Like the creatures in Vaesen, these witches could in fact be the servants of Satan performing black masses and child sacrifices; or they could be misunderstood wisefolk and teach a greater lesson to the characters and players at the table. The nuance you seek is in your game.
As for the witch-finder, this archetype is a personal favorite of mine because it calls back to some of my favorite Hammer horror films, one of the best of course being Witchfinder General, starring Vincent Price. The witch-finder also calls to mind the tropes of religious zealots you might find in other gaming universes like Warhammer Fantasy, the Inquisition in Warhammer 40k or, even darker still, the Inquisition of the real world. In my favorite games, the player characters are often not flawless heroes who are beacons of light. I prefer to tell the stories of characters who are flawed and scarred, and often rely on their comrades to help find their way to a more righteous path. This is in keeping with the core of Vaesen as well; Vaesen is a horror game, and this supplement is deeply rooted in folk horror and the superstition of Puritan beliefs. Don't forget that Vaesen also calls upon the Christian God in much of the folklore surrounding these creatures.
I understand you may not be familiar with some of these genres or tropes, or perhaps you thought I was being careless with witchcraft and putting down modern practitioners like myself and my friends, but I assure you, I am not.
I won't ask you to remove your review, or even change your rating. If anything, I want to thank you for giving me a moment to add a bit of context and an editor's note that I didn't find entirely necessary when I wrote this five page supplement. |

What's not to love? Look at majestic Thor on the cover. I love that Thor gets to shine with pride in the best way possible. Another thing I really like are the Axehandlers (one of the birthrights). It's also great to see some more attention spend to Gilgamesh. Keep going bright and with pride!

Great module with immersive audio material. It takes place in an interesting scenerie and is perfect for a oneshot! Great introduction to TC Assassins.

A really good game. My personal favourite mechanic and aspect is the touchstone system and how the characters stability is depending on what they think of the people in their lives. Yes, you get a very powerful set of powers but in the end the betrayel of one dear friend can bring you down.
I love the way this game allows for vulnerability and heart warming character interaction whilst being extremely brutal in other moments. There is a very good section about how to approach / include unsettling content andhow to make sure, that everyone is fine at the table. This is not only the familiar chapter about game safety but about several themes and topics like body disphoria, too.
Can highly recommend to tear down those who wronged you.

This game and quickstarter is clearly a work of love!
Stunning art
Neat layout
reduced and easy to get into rules (especially if you know Alien by Free league already)
quick to resolve mechanics
rules for fights as humans and in the big machines
not 5 but 8! player characters to choose from
a beginners mission with more scenes than expected
The mission give advise to the GM (or GA in this case) on how to run certain scenes or characters and on what to watch out for. According to the authors it can be run in 3 hours, I would need much longer but I guess that depends very much on the GM in question.
The mission focusses on themes and topic from shows about giant robots fighting horror angles and does a good job to convey the feelings of these shows. There is intruige, drama, danger, horrible things happening and the always very real thread of dying. The game universe is a horrible place and that shows through out the mission.
In the end it is about the friends we made along the way. No, it is about the friends we could keep alive and the relationships we have with them. This is a focus of the mission and I highly appreciate this. It seems to be a linear story for easy access to rules and universe but I (and the quickstarter) recommend to take time and develop the releationships between the pilots/characters. Make the players and characters scream in anguish as a companion they have shared time and emotional space with goes down in a barrage of flesh needles and be afraid for the pilot to have is final breath or go into a beserker rage. This game wants you to care!
Further cool things:
Want to play as the Operations Admin? Here you go!
Want mystical under- and overtones in your big robot adventures? Here you go!
Want a boss battle feel like a boss battle? Hell yeah, here you go!
Further rules from the core book are hinted at and during the mission is pointed out, where they would come into play.
What I wish for in the final release of the corebook:
More awesome missions like this one.

This ashcan delivers everything you need to run a game of the World Below. I personally really like the way it is written, very evocative and sprawling with ideas, that can blossom into whole adventures. The broshure tells, on which of the presented parts to expect further mechanics (like the base and society building phase of the Kalm or Kaos magic).
There are so many neat details like pet rocks or very fun counter magic abilities. This game will bring some fresh air into old tunnels.

I really like the game line Demon The Descent, it offers amazing characteroptions and if you enjoy spy missions, a secret war, unreliable allies and a universe fighting you, this is a good game for you.
I have run this jumpstarter at least two times. It brings good advise, makes sure everything goes smoothly and actually can be played in one session, if you want to.
As an European I had no idea why the last location would be choosen as the place for the final confrontation. After a google search I could see the visual appeal but yet. It took me quite some time to make the connection because on the surface absolutly nothing says techno angle revoloution in this place.
We had fun, drama and at least one finale in which shit went down, tension was off the charts and powers clashed.
4/5 would rebell again!
