Paranormal Power
Publisher: Steampunkette
by Stephen M. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 02/10/2023 14:17:04

There are some really good ideas in here, and the mechanics seem pretty solid. Unfortunately, it was advertised as a 5E and A5E supplement, and it is definitely NOT 5E compatible. At first I was seeing A5E language and figuring that I could do conversions on my own (although I didn't want to). However, soon it became obvious that the bulk of the player-facing material simply could not be converted. Paranormal Power uses mechanics that have no 5E equivalent: rattled, expertise dice, combat traditions, exertion, etc.

I like a lot of the content, I really do. I just wouldn’t have backed it if it were billed as an A5E only supplement. And it clearly is.

UPDATE: I reviewed this and complained that it was more A5E than 5E, giving it 3 stars. The publisher responded with an acknowledgment that it was A5E based and included some pretty comprehensive suggestion on how to make it backwards compatible to fit better with 5E. I appreciated that a lot and revised my rating to 4 stars. Were those suggestions to be included in the PDF, preferably in the main text but even as an appendix, I would give it 5 stars. If you primarily play A5E or are very comfortable converting A5E to 5E, buy this product!

Hey, just popping in to thank you for your review and make some suggestions for relatively easy conversion: If you're using 5e as the main structure, without A5e class revisions: 1) Exertion is 2xProficiency/short rest in A5e. Just drop it to Proficiency Bonus/Short Rest for 5e. (You'd need to lift the A5e class-specific pacing of classes learning maneuvers, though, for the archetypes.) 2) Rattled can be lifted, whole cloth, as a condition. Or can simply be rewritten/recontextualized as "Cannot take reactions" 3) Expertise is essentially a +2 bonus. If you're using 5e species rather than A5e heritages: 1) Psionic Heritage Traits can be recontextualized as feats, with the Paragon traits having a pre-requisite of the gift feat and level 10 (you could get away with setting it to 8, though!) 2) Nedraz can be easily adapted by treating them like Tieflings with the different varieties like "Feral Tiefling" or "Winged Tiefling". 5e Mindscape and Monsters: 1) No conversion needed, really. Ultimately, A5e is designed to be backwards compatible with 5e, and A5e and 5e characters can work in the same game without a significant balance issue. That said, in the future I'll make it more clear that my products are designed for A5e and are thus compatible with 5e. I don't want anyone to feel like they've been cheated.

Psihammer
Publisher: Better Mousetrap Games

I was pretty disappointed with this product. The psionic 'rules' presented turned out to be a handful of feats per discipline able to be taken by anybody. I know it was billed as a 'psionics-lite' rules system, but something that 'lite' shouldn't cost as much as this did.

Edit: Upon further review, I have decided that I was a little harsh in my criticism of this product. I purchased it as a replacement for psionics in my world literally the night before I was to DM a psionic encounter. When Psihammer turned out to be not what I was looking for, I was disappointed and it may have colored my review.

LIKED: It is a clever and (extremely) simple set of rules to incorporate psionics into your fantasy campaign. Just don't expect it to replace psionics as you know it.

DISLIKED: I still don't like the fact that the entire system is feat-based, that any character can just decide to skip Dodge or Combat Casting and instead become psionic. It feels more appropriate to a Superhero game, but the fact that ANYONE can just 'become psionic' is clearly what the author intended even though it is not for me.

QUALITY: Disappointing

VALUE: Satisfied

[THIS REVIEW WAS EDITED]
Elements of Magic (Revised)
Publisher: EN Publishing
by steve m. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 01/12/2005 00:00:00

Let me say at the outset that I have purchased multiple offerings from EN publishing and have found them to be mediocre at best. I continued to purchase them because I like to support small publishers in general and ENWorld in particular, and because titles such as Wild Spellcraft and Steam and Steel were not completely devoid of useful elements, although they were weak overall. So it was with some reluctance that I followed a friends advice and picked up EoM:Revised. And I couldn't be happier than I did.

EoM quite simply approaches a level of thought and creativity that I am not hesitant to call brilliant. I do not really have the time to go over point by point all of the things that I like about this alternate magic system. Suffice it to say that I have playtested every spell point (as opposed to Vancian) magic system I could get my hands on, and with the exception of EoM all have disappointed me. EoM answered all of my complaints about previous spell-point systems, and then added layers of elegance that no previous one has bothered to try. The flexibility and 'flavor' of EoM is simply stunning.

Great Job!

LIKED: Everything. Honestly.

DISLIKED: First of all, I am not afraid of complicated systems: gamers are smarter than we are given credit for, and any game mechanic becomes second-nature with enough use. That being said, lazy players and DMs might balk at the initial increase in time that EoM requires over the PHB and related spells. However, not only do the rules become easy to implement more quickly than one would expect, but there are levels of complexity in the system which are easy to eliminate if one wants to use EoM in a simpler form. (Hmm, this isn't really a criticism but more a defense against criticisms I might expect!)

QUALITY: Excellent

VALUE: Very Satisfied
Fantastic. Sean is a genius. As a DM who has been looking for a truly low-magic world that doesn't default to simply hack-and-slash, TNA is just what I needed.

QUALITY: Excellent

VALUE: Very Satisfied
