Recently, I soloed my way through Crossing Guard (31 pages, DriveThruRPG) a modern adventure for Call of Cthulhu set in the year 2023. I did use the six PCs that are provided. Because this was not your normal group of investigators and because they had interesting backgrounds, I used Player Emulator (with Tags) as my solo engine. My characters were kept busy since they had investigating to do and a gaming convention to attend (I love game conventions). My characters also had a “handler”, Mr. Ed, who was a big help. As soon as they arrived in town, they started their research. Next, they did convention registration at the Golden Nugget Hotel, followed by a meeting with Mr. Ed.
That night they went to potter’s field – the place where the creature was sighted. They did not see anything, so they left after two hours. They met Ed again at the hotel. They knew that the drug Syke was part of the problem. Two of the PCs take the drug. The PC Kevin, being a party animal, takes three. When the others went to bed he wanders the streets and photographs women (51 of them). He is feeling good. On the second day, they start it off by questioning a Syke addict. The spend the rest of the day enjoying the convention. That night they arrive at potter’s field again and Kevin sees the creature (his sanity goes down). He runs away and the others follow him. Next, they follow a lead which leads them to the Nevada Historical Cemetery Society. It is all locked up and they are unable to use their skills to disarm the alarms (bad rolls of the dice). So, they bust a window and crawl in. They quickly grab some clues and head back to the hotel. They read this new material and discover that there is a rune underneath a special obelisk in potter’s field. They also know that the rune has a design error.
The next day they start at the con. In the evening, they are back at the field with some tools. This time they try a different tactic. This is Jason the PC’s idea. Arturo talks to the creature (he had taken one of the pills). Jason tells him what to say. The creature complains about the messed up rune. So, they decide to destroy the rune. It takes them about thirty minutes. The creature is pleased. The PCs don’t know it, but they have helped an evil sorcerer and his minion (Oops!). The next day, the PCs attend the closing ceremony at the con. Kevin tries to find more of the teal pills (Syke). Good times! Oh, and drugs are bad!
