While there is much to like here in AToW there are also some head scratching design decisions.
The skill system is very nice, skill complexity sets target number instead of there being a universal target and once you get you head around how it works it very useful.
But "getting your head around it" is the running theme. Character creation, the most important part of any RPG is done well in a point buy system or choose archetype. But the Life Modules sounded very exciting. The system sounded better than Travellers random past history system.
But in reality, it is a mess. Confusing in how it works it is more of a guide for the points buy system than the best way to make a character, which is a shame.
Also, the rules encompass all the eras so you can have players confused on why they can't play a clanner in 3025. Maybe one era would have been better and spalt books for all the others.
Combat is functional but here again the decision to make the armor rules confusing by discussing 3 armor states in an attempt to combine the Wargame to the RPG could have been handled better.
Especially when you see you really need BATTLETECH: TOTAL WARFARE to get players into mechs.
AToW is not new player friendly, new to Battletech or new to the RPG hobby.
Which is a shame as there is a really good game here, a lot of good ideas clouded by some big poor design decisions
