Fine attempt at a different sort of solo adventure: murder mystery. Whilst there are multiple routes to the final confrontation, inevitably replay value is limited by knowing the identity of the culprit. (There is still interest in seeking an optimal strategy.) However NPCs are well sketched, clues and red herrings are skilfully laid out, and there is opportunity for logical deducation (e.g. who has an alibi) and elimination of suspects. Little combat until the deadly (extended) finale; could be a relatively quick play (given its length). Accurately and well written; there is a growing air of menace as disappearances start and then bodies turn up.

Few errors: "doughty" not "doubty" in first sentence of entry 51; "committed" not "comitted", second paragraph p.49.

Recommended.

Another high quality solo adventure by Red Ruin. At number 6, this series is beginning to overtake more well established gamebook series in terms of quantity - and Icon of Death surpasses many of these in terms of quality as well. Well written and superbly illustrated by the author (just look at that cover!), this intriguing adventure sees you carrying a vital item from one city to another across the desert. There are various different paths that you can take, all of which have interesting encounters, so there is good replayability here. The NPCs are all individuals with their own motivations - you won't find 'second orc guard' here!

Due to the serpent king license (the publishers of 'official' dragon warriors material), Red Ruin can't charge for their products. That such a high quality gamebook is offered for free is amazing - I would readily pay for this!

The gang at Red Ruin are putting out some excellent old school fan content, but this Dragon Warriors rules gamebook really takes things to the next level. Elegantly written and sumptiously illustrated with evocative and perfectly executed drawings this is as much a work of art as it is a damn fine gamebook. I genuinely think this book ranks up there with the best traditionally published interactive fiction - like the better Fighting Fantasy books and Lone Wolf etc. I've devoured this book and still haven't played through all the options and alternatives so the replayability factor is high. Always important in a gamebook. It's no lightweight either - at over 300 sections. I would have happily paid for this fantastic book - but best of all it's FREE! Keep up the great work Red Ruin. If this book is anything to go by I can't wait to read the next book from Mr Donachie!

At 160 pages and illustrated throughout, this is a solo adventure you would normally have to pay for - and yet it's free. The action takes you across the Principalities of the Crusades and cleverly introduces an under-used monster from the Dragon Warriors bestiary. Well written and well thought out - well worth downloading.
