INDEX CARD RPG: Free Quickstart
Publisher: RUNEHAMMER GAMES
by Dharma S. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 08/25/2023 06:00:26

Great quickstart - inspired me to pick up the 2nd edition core ruleset which is such a wonderfully readable and utilitarian ruleset for TTRPG. I really like how it uses the full set of polyhedral dice rather than, as many other 'rules-light' systems do, reverting to D6 and/ or D10 dice only. The artwork and presentation has a superb punk vibe and you've everything here you need to pair up with the three games contained within Runehammer's Sci-Punk anthology - perfect if you're looking for simple and yet brilliantly complete modules set within cyberpunk and alien invasion settings as well as a superbly detailed setting for those wanting to play something akin to James Cameron and Ridley Scott's Aliens film. Jump onboard!

Superb mini-RPG blending the best parts of Firefly and Blade Runner, all delivered in a very 2000AD comic kinda vibe and style.

Very well presented with excellent and thematic artwork throughout. You get a lot of bang for your buck, too. This is a solid and compact ruleset. Tables to roll on, guns and equipment to load up on and an awesome looking 'wanted list' of rogue bots to retire- a lot is crammed into relatively few pages.

I know it's got a pretty modest page count but I'd kill for a hardback/ physical copy nonetheless :)

Interstellar Smugglers (Tricube Tales One-Page RPG)

Awesome scifi/ space opera RPG! Very thematic and a lot of content and resources crammed into a couple of sides of paper.

Tricubes is probably the best mini-RPG system in general I've come across - the simplicity of the ruleset alongside the very concise and helpful tables really work.

It's very modular too - I haven't used the poker card system so far and I didn't think the little symbols they offer were of much use in terms of helping progress the story either - I think you're meant to drop a dice on them, but that never seems to work so well in my view.

But all in all, a very well presented ruleset that you can literally pick up and play right off the bat. Perfect for newcomers to TTRPGs too - start on this and then see if you want to move onto a more complex scifi RPG like Star Wars or Scum & Villany. That's pretty much how I'm doing it!

Tricube Tales: Solo Rules (PDF only) & Solo Deck (PDF or print)
Publisher: Zadmar Games
by Dharma S. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 08/21/2023 13:43:48

This is a pretty decent rules-light solo ruleset for the Tricube Tales one-page adventures. Bascially, pick up any of the one-page games (which are all self-contained), add these extra solo resources (stretching across 4 or 5 print-outs) and you've all the oracles and tables you need to generate RPG goodness on your own.

It's probably the best mini-RPG system I've come across - the simplicity of the ruleset alongside the very concise and helpful tables really work.

I did feel dedicating so much space to name generation was a little wasted - especially given the variety of themes on offer, several of which would not work with the names they suggest in my view. To be honest, so far I've ignored the mechanism using poker cards. And I didn't think the little symbols they offer were of much use in terms of helping progress the story either - I think you're meant to drop a dice on them, but that never seems to work so well in my view.

But all in all, a very well presented ruleset that you can literally pick up and play right off the bat. Perfect for newcomers to TTRPGs too - start on this and then see if you want to move onto a more complex solo RPG like Ironsworn or something. That's pretty much how I'm doing it!

Thank you for the review! Solo gaming tends to be quite a personal thing, so I always find it interesting to see which tools different solo gamers use. Personally, I always struggle to come up with NPC names on the fly. When I'm GMing a regular group game, I often ask the players to name my NPCs for me -- but when I'm playing solo, I have to do it myself, and I found my choices becoming very repetitive. Eventually, I resorted to using random name generators, and that improved things a lot, so I thought I'd include a simple one with the solo rules. I can certainly understand how some people wouldn't find it very useful, but it's something I reference quite often in my solo games. The Solo Rules can be used with any regular deck of playing cards. The main difference with the Solo Deck is that the rules are printed on the cards, so you don't need to reference them while playing. As with all things solo, individual gamers will pick and choose the parts that work for them -- I know some people very much enjoy the card-based approach, while others ignore it. Similarly, the story symbols were inspired by tools such as Rory's Story Cubes, which are quite popular among some solo gamers -- while others dislike iconography oracles. But they have the advantage of taking up relatively little space, meaning I can include a tailored set of symbols for each micro-setting. If you're interested in experimenting with that style of solo gaming, I heartily recommend the "Untold: Adventures Await" board game. Enjoy your solo gaming!

A decent vampire ruleset. Quite light on detail and definitely very open in terms of setting - you could play it kinda campy, like Buffy, or super serious and dark. It has some very nice and novel mechanisms that I haven't seen elsewhere. Definitely an option if you want to play a vamp game but can't deal with the amount of lore and history something like VtM or VtR has.

SCI PUNK Anthology
Publisher: RUNEHAMMER GAMES
by Dharma S. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 08/21/2023 06:40:18

This is a beuatifully presented book containing 3 fully illustrated games within the sci-fi genre. One of them is a cyberpunk plug-in for the ICRPG ruleset (also by Runehammer), one is an alien invasion RPG that can be plugged into any setting and the final one is basically the film ALIENS in an RPG - possibly ready to play in a rules-light fashion or perhaps, again, needs plugged into an existing ruleset.

I have not played any of these games as yet - realising that at least two of the three are plug-ins, I actually ordered the ICRPG core rules. But I have read through them and the presentation is top-shelf throughout. Artwork, layout, themes - everything is superb and incredibly immersive and has made me an immediate fan of Runehammer Games in general!

A high recommend indeed. I picked up the hardback and it's a beautiful little A5 sized book that makes a wonderful addition to my collection.

Great little hexcrawl/ RPG/ roll-n-write/ journaling hybrid! Nicely laid out with some very cool artwork throughout. Add a handful of D6s, some hex paper and a pen and you'll have everything you need to get up and running in a sketched-out, post-apoc world.

This would also be a wonderful tool for writers to create their own worlds and characters within that genre.

All in all, for the price, there's a lot of fun to be had here!
