BattleTech: ilKhan's Eyes Only
Publisher: Catalyst Game Labs
by James [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 01/16/2025 11:36:04

All of the followups to IlClan have been reasonably good, and IlKhan's Eyes Only might be the best of the bunch so far. Having the main fictional perspective for the most important event in your universe's recent history be a book as bad as Hour of the Wolf can be difficult to deal with, but the writing team for IKEO spin gold from straw.

Unlike Dark Age material, problems which other factions have to deal with finally start effecting Clan Wolf, and their response and the fallout is fascinating.

Art and layout in the book are fantastic, with perhaps only character art still being rather hit or miss, and over detailed on the face with an uncanny focus, but still a million miles better they were back in the 3145 books and earlier.

If you're not interested in the fiction of BattleTech, I don't know if this book has much to offer for you, but if you are it's a great read and a good update on the universe.

Fallout: The Roleplaying Game: Winter of Atom PDF
Publisher: Modiphius
by James S. [Verified Purchaser]

This might be one of the best expansions that Modiphius has ever released. It builds on the base Fallout RPG system in interesting and flavorful ways, and the core campaign of the book is an amazing read. It successfully builds on the Commonwealth setting without leaning too hard on the big factions of Fallout 4, giving the players, minor characters from Fallout 4, and the new NPC's introduced a chance to shine. The new NPC's and settlements are the real meat of this book, and Modiphius knocked it out of the park. Information is provided in clear and concise ways that makes it easy reading for me as GM, and they hit the sweet spot of providing enough details that I feel I understand characters and places really well while also leaving room for me to introduce new elements that I'd prefer or that result from player actions. The advice they offer for everything from the best way to describe horror elements depending on your audience to the "fallout" from the player's actions during quests is really great.

If I had a quibble with thos book it's that it does leave some important parts of the Commonwealth out. Most notably Bunker Hill is only mentioned in passing, which seems odd for a story that deals a lot with supplies in the Commonwealth during winter. But this is a minor quibble for me, and the books is overall well worth its price of a little over twenty bucks.

Hard Wired Island
Publisher: Weird Age Games

This sytem is SO good.

It understands what Cyberpunk should be about without the orientalist or cybernetics=evil garbage a lot of others come with, and feels fresh in tackling the issues we face today rather than retreading the 80s again.

The base setting of Grand Cross is fantastically well thoughout, and the mechanics help to make it feel like a community your characters are a part of.

I think the one thing that prevents me from giving it a 5 star it's that assets and tags feel clunky. I don't think this section of the book does a good job of explaining them to people, it took me a while to get my game group to understand how they worked. Restructuring and maybe givng more depth to some of the categories would help I think. The way you go from usables to locations and then to wearables just doesn't feel intuitive, especially since progams, drones, and weapons all have their own sections after these.

If you like Forged in the Dark games, or the Sprawl you should definitely give this a try.

It's well worth the price for the PDF version, you'd probably have to pay around $150 and buy at least four different PDFs to get anything as substantial as this from Wizards of the Coast.

The physical book is also amazing. It's HUGE and really well made.

Buy and play, you won't regret it!
