The Lost Chromatic Dragons
Publisher: Alluria Publishing
by Bryan [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 12/16/2023 08:57:47

This is a really flavorful and well-rounded release. The new chromatic dragons (six of them in all) are well-balanced against Paizo's official true dragons, but have interesting abilities that set them apart and would make them fun to use as alternatives to the familiar black, blue, green, red, and white varieties. My favorites are the greasy acid pink and the venomous orange -- but all of them (other options include muddy brown, sooty gray, sonic yellow, and a particularly nasty negative-energy purple) have their own special charm. The book is rounded out with a new unique dragon (a new spin on the long-standing legend of Tiamat's "long-lost sister") and some new kobold options. tl;dr - 6 remarkably well-done new evil dragons; a must-buy for PF1e GMs!

Phantoms: Inglenook's Guides
Publisher: Librarians & Leviathans
by Bryan [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 10/13/2023 00:20:14

This is a delightful little publication. There are 37 pages -- 31 of them full of content -- and they are all full of stuff I didn't realize I needed until I saw it, and now I don't know how I lived this long without it. The spiritualist is a really underrated class, and as a "pet" class the phantom does a lot of the heavy lifting. This supplement has a ton of new options for the phantom, including a lot of useful and flavorful archetypes and feats, as well as emotional foci, spells, and traits.

Species Archive: Fable Beast
Publisher: Azoth Games
by Bryan M. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 09/16/2023 23:07:18

I haven't had a chance to put this into play at the table yet, so this is just based on my first impressions. First of all, this book is amazing in terms of ideas. Like the datum book that came before it, I am really digging what Azoth Games is doing in coming up with fresh, new takes on what you can do with races in the Pathfinder Roleplaying Game.

Here, the idea is that you play an animal but one with the akashic subtype. This gives you much f the range of a humanoid, although you are somewhat limited in manipulating weapons and tools as you must use you mouth or veils.

There are a wide variety of choioces of animals here, with sizes ranging from Tiny to Large. All of them have the standard +2, +2, -2 ability score array, but Tiny fable beasts get an additional -2 Str, +2 Dex, and Large ones get an additional +2 Str, -2 Dex. THey also have a variety of interesting abilities to choose from.

Using the race builder rules from the ARG, here is my estimates for each of the 13 heritages. As you can see, they trend high (especially the Tiny and Large ones, which get +4 RP and +7 RP for their size adjustments, respectively). But there are some more reasonable than others.

Fable Cat, Common (Small) - 15 RP Fable Cat, Great (Large) - 21 RP Fable Crow (Tiny) - 22 RP Fable Dog (Medium) - 14 RP Fable Fox (Small) - 14 RP Fable Frog (Tiny) - 18 RP Fable Hare (Small) - 15 RP Fable Horse (Large) - 22 RP Fable Mouse (Tiny) - 20 RP Fable Shark (Large) - 22 RP Fable Snake (Small) - 17 RP Fable Tortoise (Small) - 15 RP Fable Wolf (Medium) - 15 RP

In all, I found this book really interesting. I think it's not for everyone, but I can definitely see myself throwing some animal NPCs in a game. Plus, you know there are some players that would LOVE to play an animal -- this book would give them that option... and NOT JUST for akashic characters. (Think of this as the Ponyfinder option for anyone who isn't necessarily a hardcore Brony.)

I give it 4 stars for now... with the option to add a 5th star after playing around with it more.

A great, low-cost supplement with a variety of features. Great for stimulating ideas and generating tavern roleplaying opportunities on the fly. It is rounded out with a bit of crunch -- a cleric domain and a fighter archetype -- again, playing off of the tavern theme. In all, a really great collection.

The Genius Guide to the Wolfshead
Publisher: Rogue Genius Games
by Bryan M. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 03/06/2023 06:38:28

This class is an absolute triumph. Not only does it feature a tight, balanced, and instantly playable class -- one that I would immediately allow at my table without hesitation. But it also provides a class that is flavorful and different, and looks like it would be fun to play. If you have any familiarity at all with author Owen K.C. Stephens, then you know that he is a legend in the gaming community, and he has written plenty for PFRPG, but this may be his finest contribution yet in terms of pound-for-pound goodness In a brief 16 pages (12 content), we get a superb new hybrid class centered on the new mechanic of "bedlam" (think of it at rage with style), a new archetype AND an alternate class, plus over 2 dozen new talents and advanced talents to customize your character, and one new feat.

The art, layout, and editing are all top-notch -- this is a first-class product, as well as a wonderful class. Stephens' experience and expertise shines through on every page here, and one can only hope there's even more PF1E content to come from this true master of the game. (Hint: read the introduction on page 3 for more on that...)

I can't recommend this PDF highly enough -- if you're playing PF1E, you need a copy of this in your library. Buy it; you won't regret it!

Shoony: Pug People for Pathfinder 1st Edition

by Bryan M. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 01/07/2023 22:57:53

Michael Mars has a knack for Pathfinder 1E conversions, and this short publication proves to be no exception. The Shoony are a great concept, and Mr. Mars back-converts them wonderfully from the original 2E source material with style. I instantly slotted them into my 1E campaign with ease. I hope we get more 1E material from Mars in the future -- whether more 2E conversions or original works; he certainly has a gift for it that sadly seems to be in short supply right now.

Heroes of Omen: The Nanocyte
Publisher: Paizo
by Bryan M. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 10/28/2022 07:31:08

Kevin Glusing and the folks at Samurai Sheepdog have done a really good job of taking the nanocyte, a class written for Starfinder, and converting it into Pathfinder 1E rules. In doing so, they gave it a specifically in-house Golarion flavor, althouogh I found little difficulty reskinning those elements for my current homebrew campaign. In any case, the explanation for the nanocyte's powers is very flavorful and should feel right at home in any campaign where alchemy and gunslinging were allowed. The nanocyte itself feels very balanced against current PF1 classes. It's a martial class, but one with plenty of skill points and options thanks to its nanites -- yet not as flexible as a spellcaster. You will definitely want to have a copy of Paizo's PCS: Technology Guide if you're using this class, because the nanites allow the nanocyte to mimic technological weapons and equipment, especially as they gain levels. (You can buy that on drivethrurpg also.) This is a great class for androids, if you use those in your PF1 games, and I think it would work especially well in an Iron Gods campaign.

tl;dr -- If you want to mix a little tech with your fantasy, the nanocyte is a fantastic, flavorful, recommended option.

Legendary Oracles
Publisher: Legendary Games
by Bryan M. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 10/24/2022 08:22:31

This is a really great supplement - one of the best in the series. The oracle is a great class, but it tends to not get very many options other than new mysteries. This book changes that. Unlike a lot of Legendary's class books, there's no rewrite of the oracle class here, only a lot of new options for the oracle class. There are a handful of new mysteries here, but there is so much more. It starts with alternate class features, then adds new curses, burdens (a type of alternate curse), folklore mysteries (an alternate kind of mystery that comes with a pre-determined curse), a ton of archetypes for oracles as well as for a few other classes (including prestige classes), new spells, new mythic options, new character traits, an alternate racial trait for duskwalkers, new magic items... whew! Best of all, this new content is really solid, flavorful, and allows you to play an oracle in a lot of new ways.

tl;dr - A ton of options; pick this up to add some variety to your oracles.

Rutherford's Compendium of Crazed Creatures
Publisher: Paizo
by Bryan M. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 10/19/2022 12:38:39

I bought this excited to see some P2 creatures converted to PFRPG stats. Technically, that's what it contains, but the PDF has several flaws. First of all, many of the state blocks presented are for creatures that already have readily-available stat bloacks in 1e. These may be specific NPCs in 2e adventures -- I don't know -- but I didn't really come to a "crazed creatures" book to find CR 1 humans. Problem number 2 is that it introduces a few new creatures but uses generic art for other monsters -- so I see an entry for anadi and one for biloko, but the picture between them is for an animated object. I just found that confusing. Finally, there was a cut-and-paste nature to the text -- some pages had only one paragraph, others had stat blocks, others images, and none of it seemed to follow very well. The book limited itself to CR creatures, but I would have prefered that it instead converted all of the NEW monsgters from the P2 Bestiary 1, for example. That would have been much more useful. As it is, this book is very confusing, and I'm not sure what to do with it.

tl;dr - This book could have used a more unifying theme and an editor.

This was originally a MUCH larger project, as the premise had been to convert ALL the unique creatures statblocks. Unfortunately there were way many more unique creatures then I expected from PF2e. This is still an ongoing project we had planned on continuing if there was interest! As far as the pictures, our artist had family emergencies come up causing them to bow out of the business so we had no original art and were stuck with stock photos Paizo's license allowed us to use. (Pretty restrictive.) We appreciate your honest critique on what was our very first published work! If you would like to reach out to us via email, I can make sure you are kept abreast of when this project is picked back up, and we will e more than happy to provide you with a copy of the entire compendium! Guerilla: A Pathfinder Class
Publisher: Paizo
by Bryan M. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 10/19/2022 12:22:44

Don't let the amateurish cover art fool you - this is not a bad class! It's very thematic and carries that theme very well all the way through without any obvious balance issues. (Well, possibly a bit underpowered a high levels, but it should hold its own with other martials for the most part.) There's a good selection of flavorful guerilla tricks, and some nice archetypes. The current price point is a little high for what you get (about 18 pages of large-type content for $10), but I don't grade based on that. There are a few editing/layout issues, but nothing problematic. I read this and instantly thought of uses for it, which is the best compliment I can give.

tl;dr - flavorful and worth a look.

Hybrid Class: The Culinologist
Publisher: Paizo
by Bryan M. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 10/19/2022 11:54:53

The culinologist is described as s hybrid between bard and alchemist, but it doesn't quite live up to its billing. While it is a perfectly workable class, it definitely feels a little unfinished. The culinologist's spells (called "recipes") function somewhat like an alchemist's extracts, except they're little meals not little potion-like drinks, and they're drawn from the bard spell list. This works OK, but it makes for a very familiar class. One wonders what a more experienced designer could have done making a completely original recipe system -- I am thinking about the complex but delightful herbalism system by Interjection games, for example. In addition, there are a lot of dead levels where all you get are spells, and it feels like the class could have been further developed with some nice tidbits to fill in these gaps. And other than spell selection, the class offers no choices for customization as you level-up. I wouldn't deny a player that really wanted to play this class for a one-off, but it's lacking for a campaign experience.

tl;dr -- A fun idea gets a decent start here but just needs more all around.

Breath of Life - The Vanguard
Publisher: Orphaned Bookworm Productions LLC
by Bryan M. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 10/18/2022 11:38:30

This is a Pathfinder update of the Knight, a 3.5 class from Player's Handbook II that I was quite fond of. It does a good job of updating the mechanics of the class, although it loses the Medieval flavor and reskins the class as something of a generic guardian -- a master of defense that can fit any story situation to just, sort of, defend away. And that's fine, I guess, if that's your thing - but it doesn't inspire me quite like the original Knight did. Also, it strikes me as a very railroady class: Like the gunslinger and swashbuckler, all of your class features are pre-defined, so there aren't a lot of choices to be made as you level-up. The book does come with a lot of archetypes, though, which give the vanguard (and other classes) some needed flavor. But a vanilla vanguard is pretty much always going to be a dual-shield-wielding basher, not the mounted, sword-and-board, daredevil chevalier that I once played. And that makes me sad.

tl;dr: It's a decent class, but not an inspiring one.

Hey Bryan, I totally understand where you are coming from. However, here as a bit of context so you know where we were when designing this class. This is not to say your wrong, in fact I would agree with you. As for the de-medieval-ization of the class, that was intentional, and we explained it in the introduction to the class. We were trying not to keep it pigeonholed in a specific culture. The class was certainly inspired by the swashbuckler, but I wonder what was more inspiring about the original class. From what I remember of playing it was that it was linear and under powered. Which is why we wanted to fix it. We certainly didn't make it a class of subclasses and talents so there was largely one way to go, but like you mentioned, we hope the archetypes would alleviate that. We were threading an interesting melee where we wanted to make a good class without completely obviating existing classes. We didn't want to make the fighter more useless, more did we want to tread fully over the cavalier and its mounted focus. That is why we focused more on the defensive abilities of the original knight. Anyway, I would love to hear your thoughts on how we could improve the class for when we do the compilation of this entire series. Please email us at orphanedbookwormproductions@gmail.com. Thanks!

Very nice Pathfinder conversion and update of a neglected 3.5 class -- it reminds me of ertw's Beguiler conversion, if you're familiar with that, but for the Spell Thief class.

This is an Int-based 2/3 caster with a focus on stealth and subterfuge. It's a well-balanced blend of thief and wizard, and comes with a lot of options including various talents (called "expertise"), a bevvy of archetypes (both for the spelljack and for other classes), and new feats, spells, and magic items.

It's solid, and it'll see use at my table.
