Space Knights
Publisher: Gabriel Ciprés
by Seamus C. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 02/11/2021 13:14:37

"Space Knights packs a lot into its ten pages, from interesting mechanics to idea fodder, covering everything you'll need to play a one-shot or campaign from the set-up all the way to the epilogue. With interesting tweaks to the mechanics and a low bar for entry (there are even three example Orders and a quartet of missions if you want to jump right into things), even if you're not a 40k fan there's a lot of fun to be had here." - Seamus Conneely

Skycrawl
Publisher: Aaron A. Reed
by Seamus C. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 01/15/2021 08:35:30

"The mechanics are simple and straightforward, and really do link up very well with different dice systems. Orcery is fantastically creative and a really cool new thing for players to fiddle around with. The various tables, from Atmospheres to Situations to Lands to Folk, provide a ton of variety that you're going to have to work pretty hard to exhaust. The overview at the start of the book says that the Azure Etern should be vast, wild, whimsical, and fun, and if you think of them as goals I absolutely think Skycrawl has managed to attain them." - Seamus Conneely

Vaesen - Nordic Horror Roleplaying
Publisher: Free League Publishing
by Seamus C. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 12/23/2020 13:33:03

"Vaesen’s got heft where it counts, and after reading I fully understand why I was seeing the game on so many superlative year-end lists. Just enough mechanics combined with solid writing and solid genre awareness may just make Vaesen my go-to for playing neo-Victorian monster hunters who work out of a gloomy castle. That might sound very specific, but if Vaesen learned one thing from D&D, it’s that a narrow concept works. I highly recommend giving this narrow concept a chance; your inner monster hunter and inner Scandinavian will thank you." - Aaron Marks

Factions 1: A Faction Talent Supplement
Publisher: EDGE Studio
by Seamus C. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 12/18/2020 13:27:00

"Factions 1 lets players climb the ranks of the organizations that matter to their characters while rewarding them in a new way, tying them further into the narrative of the world they exist in, and granting them further abilities to make them more capable and (ideally) unique within their party. On the GM's side of things, there's a whole set of new hooks for the old tacklebox, and a good amount of flexibility within the mechanic to deliver the desired experience to the players." - Seamus Conneely

Electric Bastionland
Publisher: Bastionland Press
by Seamus C. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 12/14/2020 10:55:54

"Electric Bastionland makes me want to play it, but that’s not all. Electric Bastionland also shows me how it should be run, providing more guidance and direction in its Conductor Resources than pretty much any other game I’ve read this year ... Electric Bastionland lavishes the bulk of its mechanical effort on the person running the game, and the result is that it’s just more accessible than the other games it gets compared to. Combine that with the meaty and evocative Failed Careers that players will readily be inspired by, and you have a winner. The setting is weird, the mechanics are light, and the Conductor is well-prepared. Come get lost in Bastion...you won’t leave the same." - Aaron Marks

Cyberpunk RED

by Seamus C. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 11/14/2020 15:06:26

"Cyberpunk Red is not a tie-in game, it’s the next edition of Cyberpunk 2020. This means mixing new layout with old rules, and 2020s social awareness with 1980s cheese. I’m not going to say it’s the next big thing in tabletop. I am, however, going to play the hell out of it." - Aaron Marks

Bluebeard's Bride
Publisher: Magpie Games
by Seamus C. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 10/09/2020 23:07:52

"Bluebeard’s Bride is not for the faint of heart, but for horror fans or people at least interested in exploring it I haven’t come across another game that works as well within that genre. The content is genuinely scary, the rules all work towards maintaining the right vibe, there is a surprising amount of room for creativity (even for a PbtA game) on both the side of the Groundskeeper and the Sisters, and even the basic ‘How to Play’ text is written to start making the shadows seem deeper. Even the look of the book (which is very nice even in PDF form) helps with this: there’s weird, echoey-looking text all over the place, blood drips from section dividers, the art is extremely well done, and important text is often an eerie blue."

Alice Is Missing: A Silent Roleplaying Game
Publisher: Hunters Entertainment
by Seamus C. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 09/25/2020 11:32:47

"Alice is Missing is impressive. A lot of care put into the game from design to art to support, a lot of potential for emotionally compelling storytelling, and a truly unique mechanic of play that takes advantage of the technology that's at our fingertips. Whether it's from Starke and co. or from other creators that get inspired, I hope we see more games like this in the future."

"How do you make a world feel more ‘real’/internally consistent? How do you follow the idea of industrialized magic to its various logical endpoints? How do you make a world more inclusive and open to different types of characters/people? You put the damn work in, that’s how, and that’s what Nausicaä has done here in the Primer."

#iHunt: The RPG
Publisher: Machine Age Productions
by Seamus C. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 01/22/2020 08:38:26

"iHunt makes Fate work for horror ... the core mechanics that enable character competencies allow characters to get to where the horror is taking place, instead of letting them bypass it. I’d recommend this game to anyone interested in horror RPGs, not just because it’s good (it is), but because it’s modern. In a medium where Call of Cthulhu gets rehashed every Tuesday, we need a game based on dread from the 2020s instead of dread from the 1920s."

Afterlife: Wandering Souls
Publisher: Angry Hamster Publishing
by Seamus C. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 12/21/2019 11:38:07

"If you want to really explore who a character is, so much so that even you the player are only really meeting them for the first time over the course of the campaign, in a world that manages to be different from what you’ll find in almost any other game, than you should be giving this one a try. Afterlife makes randomized character creation fun and interesting (I’d say even for the holdouts), has simple mechanics that even newcomers will find easy to pick up, possesses a slew of interesting abilities and impressive powers, explores a fascinating world and the worlds within it, and gives you plenty upon plenty of meaningful choices."

Five Torches Deep

"OSR really isn’t my usual stomping ground, but FTD caught my interest with the 5e link and kept it by sticking to its guns. It offers deadly combat, magic that is dangerous but awe-inspiring, adventuring where every hour of torchlight counts . . . without being needlessly brutal about it, with strong principles and a real sense of grabbing the best of its various source materials."

Dust Bowl Galaxy Rulebook

"Dust Bowl Galaxy is quick to pick up and learn, easy to play, brings something new to the dice, and for a book that’s only about 94 pages long packs in a ton of character. I quipped about Post-Apocalyptic!Firefly up above, and while I wouldn’t reduce the game to that quip the vibe behind it comes from a tone so wry you’d think it was a strong whiskey."

Ngen Mapu • A World of Adventure for Fate Core
Publisher: Evil Hat Productions, LLC
by Seamus C. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 12/18/2019 12:26:20

"I think the greatest thing [the adventure included in the book] shows off is its ‘Big Bad’, the human whose heart and mind the ngen must try to change in order to save the spring. The character isn’t just a sympathetic villain, she’s not even a villain in the first place: her secret motives would be recognized by most as, if not 100% selfless, morally good. She just doesn’t understand the threat to La Cascada and its ngen, who will vanish from the world forever if the project goes through. For prospective players and GMs wondering how complicated, challenging, and interesting the game could get, she is the perfect example."
