Easy to get start. If you need something more complex, you can always resort to Mythic. But this is always the base of all my solo games.

Literal game-changer: After several decades, tens of thousands of dollars' worth of previously unused detritus from (likely) tens of thousands of (largely forgotten) RPG are about to get their due! This, and the dice and playing cards, are all you need to play any system.

If you have boxes upon bookshelves of RPG stuff even eBay doesn't want, you can retire. This is all I plan to do for the rest of my life. Thanks (I guess).

One Page Solo Engine was my first oracle, and it's excellent for coming up with NPC motivations and other things that would come up in a solo game. However, it would also be excellent as a quick first go-to Oracle for a traditional DM as well.

Pair it with Cairn, Knave, or other light OSR game, and you have all you need for loosely-directed RP.

If you eventually find you'd like slightly meatier:

  • There is the One Page Mythic GME (and it's bigger sibling, the Mythic GME 2e), or
  • CRGE, UNE, and BOLD, by the late Zach Best of Conjecture Games, which can help come up with entire plots, waylays, and involved NPC interactions

At this point there are a LOT of Solo-Engines, Oracles, etc out there. Most of them have pages describing the mindset/philosophy/etc of what Solo Play is and general advice. Those same Solo-Engines will also have the same No, And/No/No, but/Yes, and/Yes, Also Tables. If you are LUCKY the book will have something else of actual use thrown in.

This is one of the most expansive Solo Engines I have found. It does not just have the No/Yes table, but it also has quest generation, NPC generation, Motivation Generation, Random Events, complications, even Dungeon and Hex generation. All at a fraction of the size and without making you read through an entire book.

This is easily the best Solo-Engine I have found.

I haven't had the chance to try this, but it certainly looks like a great solo engine compressed into 2 pages (plus cover and a third page with useful info and clarifications). It is much better explained than the previous versions shared by the author in social media and forums, and benefits from some of the innovations introduced by PBTA games (like GM moves). The first page features the solo engine and oracle, while the second includes a series of random generators for plot hooks, NPCs, dungeons (in the generic sense of any kind of structure waiting to be explored, be it an underground labyrinth, a derelict spaceship, or an abandoned fortress), and hex maps (again, in a generic sense; with some imagination, you could probably use this to populate a sector of space or a new region in your swords and sorcery world). You just need 2d6 and a pack of cards, but options are provided for playing using only dice (in which case you need a d12 and a d4) or only cards. The price is unbeatable, and you won't lose anything but a few minutes of your time to check if this works for you. I intend to give it a try in the next few days.
