Phantom War vol: 1 is designed to introduce the reader to the beginning a major threat in Jay's, Guardian Universe. Detailed within is the history and current events within the alternate dimension that is the main setting piece for the Phantom Wars. This also goes into a lot of detail about Lord ShadArk, his most trusted followers and the creatures that make up the bulk of ShadArk's horde.

As always, Jay packs in a lot of information into this. There are a ton of ideas throughout Phantom War vol: 1 that can be used as is, or as the starting point to countless other adventures.
