Another solid adventure, good puzzle, I really appreciate the side view of the tower. With this my party finished up their experience in the towers of Ythryn and had a great time doing it!

Another great little micro dungeon. I didn't modified it a bit to take out some of the powerful magical items. I wasn't ready to give all that stuff to the party at level 9. But the encounter and scenario is still great.

Might be my favorite of the towers! I mixed things up by having Avarice's party also investigating the tower at the same time, so there were dueling performances, but other than that ran it as is.

The play bit is just FUN! My players loved acting out the ending of Shrek and with the performance saves being as high as they are, my party STRUGGLED with it. I almost had a player go down due to the audience's psychic damage. This led to a very engaging and kind of absurd mish mash of silly acting shenanigans and deadly consequences that felt very on brand for the magic ludicrousness and horror of Ythryn.

DDAL08-04 A Wrinkle in the Weave
Publisher: D&D Adventurers League

Date Added: 03/20/2023 08:29:27

I've run DDAL08-01 through DDAL08-03 in conjunction with my Waterdeep Dragonheist campaign for context.

What I liked: I took the vague idea of the Folded Time Trilogy (magic item interacting with the weave) in order to seed the location of one of the keys to the vault in my adventure. The key being the magic ring that sends the party back in time. BUT I've made a lot of changes to the trilogy in order to make it more cohesive so that's about all other than the scenarios. I also liked that the party gets to meet Halaster and Artor in the past, the party seemed psyched that they got to meet younger hotter Artor. The opportunity for social encounters is nice.

What I didn't like: This wasn't worth running now that I have actually run it. We stuck to 2 hours, I hinted at the bonus objectives but they don't really do anything. It doesn't feel like anything happens in the adventure. The party walked around a bit and some members engaged in the social stuff but mostly my players were confused about what they need to do.

The adventure fails to:

  1. Outline a clear objective for the party (figure out what's up with the ring, buy WHY! How does it help them get back to their own time.)
  2. Give clear stakes, why does the party care about the assassination plot, what reason do they have to know about any of this history?
  3. Have a clean ending, they just need to leave the palace? The door is 2 turns away from the furthest location, what's the point?

THIS WAS BAD! Don't bother.

Absolutely worth a buck, the flow chart helped me get my hands around the general flow, and the optional encounters help flesh out things as the party travels further and further from Phandalin. Great!

Ythryn Expanded Tower of Evocation - maps and extra content for Rime of the Frostmaiden
Publisher: Dungeon Masters Guild
by Cameron E. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 02/20/2023 12:21:51

I've been running all of the expanded Towers, This was the fifth one the party explored.

What I liked: Very thematic, lots of flavor, the lightning room puzzle with the jellies thawing is inspired. Great mini encounter to run in 2-3 hours. I liked that there were clearly outlined multiple ways to handle the trophy case.

What I didn't like: No complaints here. My party elected not to play Chain Lightning since they could disintegrate the Wall of Force, but I like that this was an option.

Overall: Great expansion option for Ythryn. Maybe my favorite tower so far? It's tough between this and Conjuration.

I've been running all of the expanded Towers, I believe this was the 3rd or 4th one the party explored.

What I liked: The structure and everything works very well. I didn't start expanding the towers until the party had explored the observatory, so I wasn't able to implement this module as it would have contradicted previous events.

What I didn't like: Some sort of alternate implementation that included the Observatory as a second location would be nice just in case someone is looking at this as an option in the middle of running Ythryn.

Overall: Great expansion option for Ythryn.

I've been running all of the expanded Towers, I believe this was the 3rd or 4th one the party explored.

What I liked: Just everything, the Brain in a Jar is a WONDERFUL bit of fun, the crawling claws from the book having a bit more going on is great. The expansion on the necromancer is great. It turns kind of a non-encounter into an encounter.

What I didn't like: No complaints here.

Overall: Great expansion option for Ythryn.

Ythryn Expanded Tower of Conjuration - maps and extra content for Rime of the Frostmaiden
Publisher: Dungeon Masters Guild
by Cameron E. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 02/20/2023 12:15:33

I've implemented the expanded towers into the exploration of Ythryn, this was the second tower the party explored.

What I liked: This was a great little adventure, and is a great alternate to the tower as written. The tower of Conjuration in the book is still neat but the magic mansion is a fantastic addition and it helps to have a spot to really rest safely. I had the hero's feast also cure Arcane Blight, having that as a limited resource was a good pressure valve release without eliminating the threat of the disease entirely. The traps and puzzles are great, the Ice Devil is a fantastic complication, on a revisit to the tower I had the devil gone (freed by Avarice's followers, showing they were also working to complete the Rite of the Octad.

What I didn't like: Honestly nothing much, just a minor change I made was the door to the magic mansion could ALSO open up to the Hag Den as an alternate location if not properly opened, added a bit of spice to the exploration.

Great addition to the towers in Ythryn.

DDAL4-01 Suits of the Mists (5e)
Publisher: Wizards of the Coast
by Cameron E. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 02/20/2023 11:55:44

I've started running the DDAL4 series with a group of players as a connected campaign. We recently completed the first adventure, Suits of the Mist.

What I liked: The 5 adventures are well timed and paced on an individual level. There's plenty of challenges here and some fun NPCs to interact with.

What I didn't like: I didn't get a good sense of urgency or dread until part 5 in the adventure. The travel time for each section makes the module last a week or so in game, and every time a Raisa is picked, the adventure asks the DM to stonewall the players on information "until all the Raisa's are brought together" then Sybil shows up and also doesn't really answer anything. I made some changes adding details from the next adventures in the series to forshadow and have portents, but running as is it would have been frustrating.

Blue Alley
Publisher: Dungeon Masters Guild
by Cameron E. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 02/20/2023 11:37:05

I've been running Waterdeep Dragonheist (Alexandrian Remix) for my friends, and took over as DM after Chapter 2. I introduced Blue Alley to the party early in the adventure but they waited until level 6 to enter it. I ran the dungeon as is except for adding more monsters into each encounter in order to adjust the CR of the encounter.

What I liked: This is a fantastic adventure Even for a level 6 party, just adding in some more skeletons, specters, mephits, etc still does a great job draining party resources combined with all the clever traps. The different keys give a lot of incentive to go back and forth through the dungeon, same with the riddle puzzle. My party got Primara right away, but stayed in Blue alley (mistakenly thinking that the Stone of Golorr was in the Alley) and it slowly chewed them up. The only thing I added to the dungeon was a mini-tiamat in an additional side room. A trapped door leading to a chute with 8 kobolds and 5 chromatic wyrmlings. The adventure as written though it terrific and I see how dangerous and deadly it would be for a level 2 party!

What I didn't like: No real complaints here aside from Primara needing to be a wondrous item in her own right, I turned her into a magic statue that could heal with a version of the Unicorn's Horn ability. But other than that just FANTASTIC!

Interesting idea on expanding the tower, the map is beautifully done. But the central encounter doesn't work as written. The Magen guarding the stairs in the penultimate room of the tower can't function inside an anti-magic field, unless I'm severely misunderstanding the way it is set up.

Hi Cameron, Glad you like the concept and the maps. If I understand your question correctly, it sounds like you’re suggesting magen can’t function in an antimagic field similar to animated armor. Animated armor has a specific trait called antimagic susceptibility that causes it not to function in an antimagic field. Magen do not have this feature and thus would be unaffected in this way. Jeremy Crawford addresses this in the tweet below saying:. “Most of the constructs in D&D were given life by magic, but their continued existence isn’t fueled by magic, unless their stat block says otherwise. Sometimes magic in D&D is the fuel. But other times it is just the spark.” In the absence of the antimagic susceptibility trait, we can assume magen function the same way. https://twitter.com/jeremyecrawford/status/1252327102155616257?s=46&t=7wCjm99PMJKWeypXyU2nVg Hope that helps the encounter!
