Excellent hexcrawl with good side quests, interesting characters. Perfect for newbie players or referee. It fits really well into a faery setting such as Dolmenwood.

A nearly flawless module and certainly my favorite from any system. I've run this using Shadowdark (with very minimal adaptation) for 3 different groups to and every player found this to be among the best short adventures they've tried. Most tables "finished" it in about 12 hours of playtime. Highly recommended.

I got so many hours of gaming out of the Black Wyrm of Brandonsford. Ran it several times, most recently at my Shadowdark open table. The Wyrm keeps on giving! i think, this is the perfect module for people who want to try out osr the playstyle since the Module offers a little bit of everything: A concise sandbox with a small dungeon, options for wilderness exploration, fun adventure locations, a fricking dragon, and memorable Npcs. I also dig the fairy tale vibe of the module, and that the main villain seems to be inspired by the Nibelungenlied. Whimical, sometimes gloomy forest fantasy goodnesss

A fantastic OSR adventure that really makes the old school fairy tale adventure feeling shine. Recommend it strongly.

got the print copy, great module with loads of fun adventure hooks. i would give it 5 stars but it has a few errors. in the goblin castle map, areas 3 and 4 are swapped and in the barrow mound map, areas 10 and 11 are swapped. also the stat block for the noblewoman statue in area 19 is missing.

I ran this module as part of our ongoing campaign and The Black Wyrm of Brandonsford deserves its reputation as one of the best adventures of recent years! Its one of the easiest adventures to run well. The author gives you inspiring details in few enough words that you can quickly scan them. You could run it with very little preparation. If you are going to run it, you would only need to fully read the first few sections. The rest you can scan as you go. It feels like a medieval legend in a way that brings the faerie tale to life. Players have a great deal of freedom but also some direction or directions. Multiple play throughs are likely to be quite different. A small region with a great deal to interact with. Well worth running for groups with many styles of play.

Fabulous little mini-campaign. Would be an ideal scenario for new players but it's well crafted and poignant enough to keep veterans happy too

My 5th-grade son has been running this during recess for his friends (using Shadowdark RPG). He's enjoyed it so much that I am going to buy The Isle of Forgotten Gods for him to run as the continuation in the campaign. Thanks, Chance!

I got the print and PDF version of this. Nice layout, clear with good maps and enough npc descriptions to give you relationship info. Set up like a sandbox, tread carefully or you'll likely end up toe to toe with something your party can't just assault. Story and locations enough to get a couple play sessions out of for me.

This is an excellent adventure setting, appropriate for a small campaign. I've run it for three different groups now. The layout is logical, descriptions are just long enough to get a good feel for the character or place, and the story is quirky and fun. Still has that OSR dangerous feel that promotes problem solving instead of always violence. Lots of potential side jobs for the players to explore. Highly recommended.

Great little adventure.

Great job chance. OSR at its best.

pros

  • Self contained and I would not suggest trying to burn through it in a session as there are lots of layers and opportunities for spin off elements.
  • great sandbox.

Also has two uncommon features that make it great.

  • The first is some dangerous monster relative to the low level adventures to make everyone sit up and think.
  • This is then combined with weaknesses or loop holes to exploit (giant is asleep, Dragon has weak.spots and a way to poison it etc).

cons

  • only thing I would do is reduce treasure and magical items as it's a bit too generous for my taste.

This is seriously one of the best adventures I've read. Can't wait to see more content from Chance.
