Altered Carbon: The Role Playing Game - Core Rules
Publisher: Hunters Entertainment
by A customer [Verified Purchaser]

Though I like the system, it is essentially just “Cyberpunk.” The thing that makes “Altered Carbon” different from any other of the cyberpunk universes are the elder race, that are colloquially known as “Martians.” With in the story line, the Martians are responsible for and may still be acting through the technology that humanity currently utilizes. This gives the Altered Carbon story the feeling of a house built on a burial mound, but the Martians are barely given a mention in the core rule book. Here’s hoping that a source book on the subject comes out soon.

Dungeon Desk Pad

I have purchased multiple items made by Peter Regan through his company "Squarehex," and have supported many of his "Kickstarter" campaigns. I have been pleased with his creations. The products are designed with the active gamer in mind, and tend to be small note books. This product is designed to allow a game master to get all her/his ideas on one sheet, and is therefore a large desk blotter type of pad. It would be easy for someone to dismiss Peter's work as "What anyone could do with a ruler and a pencil." I have experience in this area of work. When I was in the U.S. Air Force, I served as a graphic specialist. This work is tedious and demanding, and Mr. Regan does it well.

Not a bad job. The line drawings were not as good as previous products, and many vehicles were based on “Whiz Kid” produces, (the sooner they get that stuff out of their system, the better.) There were some good items, for example the Perfect battlemech, and the Aesir/Vanir Assault Dropship. There is also a good section on infantry formations.

Campaign 1: Secrets of the Ancients
Publisher: Mongoose
by Rodney K. [Verified Purchaser]

Over all, not a bad start. The first campaign is a murder mystery designed to lure the characters into the plot of the “Secrets of the Ancients.” I agree with Mr. Clunie, the graphics could stand some improvement, but in general, they are sufficient. I found the acting hints helpful. This is the first Mongoose adventure I’ve read, so I don’t know if that is a standard component of their products. The big selling point of the entire adventure will be the nature of the Ancients themselves. Mongoose Publishing has already broken with GDW’s concept that the ancients didn’t want to be involved with the rest of the universe. I assume that Mongoose will keep the Droyne as the ancient race, but beyond that it’s anybody’s guess. I will reserve my final judgment for the complete product.
