Delta Green: God's Teeth

I am having a hard the time trying to think of a medium other than roleplaying games which could tackle subject matter as hard as this scenario and provoke such deep a reaction. Child abuse, immigration policy, family separation, and threats of extradition all feature in one way or another among other heavy themes. The Wire and Hellraiser come to mind as comparable yardsticks of integrity in vision and realization. I recall the revulsion and loathing associated with the family separation policy during the Trump administration, but to see the institutional violence and social policies of the United States over a far longer span of time so ingeniously eviscerated and rendered into challenging material for Delta Green is wondrous. Once I started reading this material as my potential next campaign I could not put it down. I look forward and simultaneously feel great trepidation about running this campaign. I must also express my sincere respect for the subtlety of writing in God’s Teeth. The nuance and sensitivity to the subject matter covered is without parallel in the gaming material I have come across.

I had fantastic time running this scenario over two sessions. It was great to encounter several beasties from the Bestiary and experience how they can be so effectively incorporated into a thrilling short scenario with a fairly straight forward premise. The attention to detail with all of the Newtling villagers and the opponents was really evocative, and the author's own illustrations gave a cohesive feel to the proceedings. The horror elements contrasted deliciously with cute newtlings. I was fortunate to have a Scottish player in my party, as I was corrected on the pronunciation of brollachan, there I was thinking it was just another yokai. Perhaps that is what I love the most about Glorantha, without looking everything up it is possible to discern myths from all manner of cultures, and still feel they belong in the world. If you are a GM with a party of adventurers passing a marsh in Sartar or somewhere suitably peaty, you are guaranteed a fine session or two of Newtling tribe related excitement in Bog Troubles.

Viral: A Modern Call of Cthulhu Scenario

I had a blast playing in this scenario over a couple of sessions during playtesting. I was quite fortunate to join as a number of waiting list sign-ups dropped out at the last minute. The concept for the group gives great character motivations for all the players to interact with one another irrespective of the encounters they may have. The use of technology to give glimpses into the mystery was really innovative and just as fun for the party members not equipped with such gear. The additional game mechanics were subtle and tonally suited to the scenario. The only thing I missed compared to campaign play was a vast cast of NPCs, but I realize any additional people on the island setting would not have enabled the ramping up of the tension throughout the game. The rich back story will make it a really fun scenario to run as a keeper, and all the handouts, artwork, maps, and pre-generated characters are well thought out and cohesive throughout. If you or your group need a modern day Mediterranean island experience as a group of live-broadcasting paranormal investigators, this is the scenario for you.

The Dregs of Clearwine

I absolutely love this seemingly minor addition to the city of Clearwine. The grunginess of life in the dregs is invoked so clearly by the combination of non-player characters, their motivations, and the attention to detail throughout. I am hoping my group’s duck character will get a chance to stay at the Durulz Flophouse next time we get to the Dreg’s. My favourite is definitely Mama Vorlena for the influence she and her family have in the area. I’ll happily exhaust all the story hooks in here.
