I ran this adventure for two different parties, both had 4 lvl 3 PCs. The first group had a lot more healing, and I ran the adventure at the maximum scaling. They managed to complete it just fine. My other group only had a cleric, and so they struggled a little more. I ended up having to scale down a lot of the monsters, but I was also just rolling well against them. Both groups found the holly and stuff in the celler, but both had no idea what to do with them. This could be an interesting thing if you are going for a longer story aspect, them returning at one point and the spores still there, but this was purley just for a one shot with some players in town for a weekend, so I knew they would be disappointed with that kind of ending, but that is unique to my situation. I had little stones that were two colors to try and throw my players off when gaining spores. They didn't know what they were rolling, but knew it had something to do with the spores. Even if they succeeded on the rolls, I gave them a different colored stone, and that really ampted up the worry and suspicion cause they didn't know fully what each stone represented. Overall a fun adventure that my groups both enjoyed!
