Neurocity is to RPGs what the cult film Beyond The Black Rainbow is to movies. A weird dystopian science fiction set in an decaying authortiarian technocracy out of 1984, brave new world, or Terry Gillam's Brazil. Absolute obedience is mandatory, and thanks to cloning not even death is an escape. the setting is sharply realized and absolutely viscious, its geared to nhilistic farce or noble tragedy rather than save the world heroism.
The mecanics are designed to be simple and unobtrusive, rolling 2d6 under a target number. The game has an inovative stress mechanic- gain stress to reroll failures, but also when disobeying authorty, or suffering humilation. Too much stress and you can snap, making you a prime candidate for re-education. Lose stress with drink or drugs. The stress mechanic nicely reinforces the games themes. the game, mostly, has no character progression mechanics and is designed for short campaigns of 3-4 sessions.
The games art is mostly stark black and white, with the ocasional shock of garish color- remincent of underground comics from the 80s. The art art really makes the book- it feels like somrhing you'd buy at a head shop rather than a game store.
I highly recommend this game. Its extreme setting and mechanics designed to grind the players to dust may not be for everyone, but it absoltely succeeds in what it sets out to do. i think we may be seeing the early work of a great talent.
