DCC Book of Fallen Gods
Publisher: Goodman Games
by Lucas [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 06/19/2024 02:09:02

The book is a listing of 7 fallen gods as patrons - that could have been cool but they feel incomplete because they do not have patron spells. There is a blurb in the book noting patron spells may be available in the future in other Goodman Games products - not good.

Either cut two or three patrons and include patron spells or simply make it a bigger book and charge more.

This is the first Goodman Games product I've been disappointed with - sad, but was bound to happen sometime.

Shadowrun: Aztlan

Printed book: 2 stars

Content: 5 stars

The printed copy is rife with inconsistent print quality, unfortunately almost all the SR 1e book reprints from DTRPG have this problem. This is the only way you're probably going to get a hard copy of Aztlan without paying a premium. I'm not sure if the issue is a low quality scan, printing issue, combo or something else but it is difficult on the eyes how text runs from light to overly dark/bold.

The writing here is top notch, Nigel Findley was one of the best RPG writers of his day and deserves mention in the G-O-A-T list. There's not much in the way of game mechanisms in the book. The focus is on setting information and plot hooks. Like almost all Shadowrun books of this type there are old BBS style postings on what people think of a given topic covered often suggesting to the gamemaster how they may spin or work a story/topic.

Excellent material -I'm just disappointed the physical copy was poorly printed/scanned.

TLDR: Printed books is ok, could have been better. Content is excellent.

Physical book is 3 stars

The book itself is 5 stars

The printed copy is (sadly) one of the better Shadowrun reprints you can get from DTRPG. It's ok - it does have some inconsistent print quality but is better than other original Shadowrun reprints I've seen. As far as the book content - well, it's classic Shadowrun. I'm not a fan of the game mechanisms but the setting and fiction are excellent.

Solar Blades & Cosmic Spells (Variant Cover)
Publisher: Old Skull Publishing
by Lucas A. [Verified Purchaser]

Excellent space adventure game - i get a gonzo / space opera feel from the art but more 'serious' games can be run with the ruleset provided. IMO the setting and adventrue generation tools included are the highlight of the work. Game mechanisms are easy to pick up and rules are given for just about any kind of space game you would like to play/run.

Physical print of the hardcover was suprisingly good. Unfortunately POD quality is hit-or-miss even from the same printer. My copy survived shipping in good shape. Image and text quality are excellent, binding is glued as you would expect but seems solid enough. Cover is good - i would recommend paying the extra to 'upgrade' from the standard cover art to the variant cover if you're buying the hardback version.

I've become a fan of Diogo's work. His games feature rule mechaninsms that are not complicated paired with an open framework that provide setting and adventure generation tools for game masters.

Horrors
Publisher: FASA

FASA's books had top notch setting and story elements, this book is no different. The excellent art and story-telling via narration greatly aid if you would like to use the horrors in a different system.

The scan is excellent quality. I wish there was a print on demand copy available to order.

Excellent print copy. If you're going to get this spend the extra money and get a print copy. I've been critical of DriveThru print products in the past but this is an example of a print copy done well. Print quality is good, cover art is sharp and the maps are included althought the large one is split up and in the back but the inclusion is appreciated.

Two small criticisms are that the parchment background can compete with the text, I wish the parchment effect was toned down a bit. The second is there are some sections where the scan left darkish 'bars' down the edges of the page. These do not affect readability but it is noticable because is not an intended effect and it's noticable that some pages have this and some don't.

Overall I'm pleased with the purchase and would encourage anyone purchasing the PDF to spend a little extra and pick up the print copy.

Talisman Adventures Fantasy Roleplaying Game

I guess I'm a hater or stupid or a stupid hater.

Lots of folks seem to like this product. I like the system but the book feels incomplete to me. I'll give a couple of examples below, if i've missed something and comments are allowed please leave one and let me know where i've gone astray or leave something in the comments for the product.

First is the setting and map. The map has no scale. I don't know if the Realm is about as big as the UK, Maui or China. How many days does it take to ride a horse across it?
Many key features/people are just given bland nouns as names ... the Wizard, the King, the Realm, the City, the Chapel, etc. If someone in the US references 'the city' they're likely talking about New York but it has a name - New York. I understand the RPG is based off a board game but it leaves the setting feeling flavorless and infects reading the history of the setting with the same.

I read the listing of ancestries (races) was was excited - ghouls, trolls, leywalkers (satyrs) and sprites along with the usual ones. Tiny characters are extremely difficult to balance so I was excited to take a look at the sprite. A general description is given - ok. No average or bounded height or weight were given. Are these sprites human size i asked myself and they have unlimited flight - that's very strong. I re-read the entry thinking I missed something - nope - no indication at all of mass or any kind of equipment restriction. I searched the art for clues and found one piece of art showing a sprite next to other characters. They look to be 6 to 8 inches tall. But no listings are given for equipment restrictions or specialized equipment for sprites. Yes, this can all be adjudicated by some common sense but i know one of my players would make a sprite with a greatsword argue it should deal full damage. I'd point out it'd be smaller than a table knife and then they'd state it's still a greatsword and I'd have to overrule it. As consumers we're paying for a set of rules to shape the game we're participating in.

There is no flavor or personality given to any of the greater powers in the game that a priest or prophet class would devote themselves to just 'light' and 'darkness' or the 'On High'. Nothing else. The restrictions for the priest also gives me flashbacks to the pacifist healer feat from D&D 4e shudder.

It was a bit of a 'death of a thousand cuts' situation for me. There are other small issues but i don't want to write an essay as a review.

I really like the d6 system all this was built on though. However, the above issues give me pause about even running a one shot with this game. As it is i'm cancelling my pre-order for the hardcopy.

If i've missed something please leave a comment if possible. I wanted to like this product, maybe it's just not for me.

The scan is fine, text/ink is good and the content is a nice walk down memory lane.

I received the hardcover - and it is POORLY done, sloppy. The corners are messy and i'm concerned they'll come apart, the covers are oversized with an overhang that is double or triple the size of normal.

I have purchased 3 hardcovers from DriveThru and all of them were disappointments. Poorly done. One of them split the day I received it.

I would recommend avoiding hardcovers from DriveThru at this time, get the softcover and save yourself some money and disappointment.

Full marks for the content. The printing is fine the binding is a complete disappointment.

I was happy with the PoD book - print is dark and crisp with good paper quality.

The PDF was scanned from a stained copy. There are a couple of pages with food (?) stains on them - disappointing for a product you paid for.

The PDF is bookmarked but not searchable nor is text selectable.

5 stars for the PoD book, 2 stars for the PDF
