Wonderfully imaginative and versitile ruleset. Easily one of my favorite games in the OSR space. I love the inclusion of author's notes for WHY certain rules are they way they are.

The only reason this isn't a 5-star game is that print-on-demand results in text way too close to the spine. The layout could benefit from a larger inside margin for printing.

Very well-written and well-organized. I am reviewing/benchmarking aa bunch of playing systems and this one generated lots of notes. The author knows who their audience is and delivers a system that puts a lot of 'friction' (or 'reality') into the game. Lots of great ideas....and free. Hard to beat that scenario for value.

I picked this up a while back, being a GM for several Black Hack based games, and I'm always checking out the spinoffs and supplements.

What I loved the most about this is the additional gameplay layer that operates at the party level. None of my current campaigns are in a position to switch to this minigame driven style...

However, I am seeing a lot of potential as a solo game. I like that the party level procedures provide a way for me to utilize a ton of other content creation randomizers I already have as a game inatead of just as preperarion tools.

I haven't played the game yet as-is, but on a read through, that part of the game in particular is something I've never seen handled as well and so simply.

Especially the handling of factions. As a GM, I love the concepts there as a way to evolve the setting through play. But it takes the burden off of me as auteur/mastermind and lets me referree a game i feel like a collaborator in, rather than a keeper of.

Do you like games where you never get lost, never get hungry, never kill your buddy, never find bad weather, never have to repair your stuff, never run out of money, never have to worry about the weight of your stuff, and where magic is predictable? Then this game is not for you. For the past few days I have soloed my way through Lavender Hack. It is free on DriveThruRPG. It is designed for a Dungeon Master and several players. I used The Solo Adventurer's Toolbox to solo it. I used a first level character to play through it. My hunter survived his first adventure, but he needed to get back home to get some rest and relaxation. On the way home he encountered a wolf and got killed. So, next time I will try two characters. I hope they will not kill each other . . .

This is an awesome review, thank you! I've actually been thinking about adding some solo stuff the past few weeks. Might not be appropriate for the main PDF, but I think it would be cool to have a hex generation engine that's a little bit "push your luck" as you try to find worthwhile sites to explore. I haven't seen that toolbox, but I'll have to check it out!
