Nochet: Queen of Cities (RuneQuest)
Publisher: Chaosium
by Peter W. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 08/04/2023 08:41:40

This might possibly be the best addition to the JC yet. Why? This supplement honours the traditions of the Pavis and Thieves World boxed sets from the 80s but on a grander scale. 'Nochet: Queen of Cities' opens up Esrolia to play by providing a richly detailed guide to the quarters, streets, buildings, landmarks, great families and customs of its capital city. This supplement is well produced, imaginative and begs to be played. If you buy only one thing from the JC, buy this.

Dragon Pass - Glorantha Area Maps

This is one of the very best maps of Dragon pass available. With this and the excellent map in the RQ Starter Set, your bases are all covered. The high resolution means one can zoom right in without losing fidelity unlike many of the publshed products. This can very easily serve as a master campaign map. Highly recommended.

Velhara's Mirror
Publisher: Chaosium

Date Added: 04/10/2023 04:56:52

Having run my players through Bonn Kanach, I was very much looking forward to this second instalment. It doesn’t disappoint. The campaign switches from being location based with Bonn Kanach to more of a sandbox. The author opens up Beast Valley, describing the motivations of several sets of protagonists and describes six engaging scenarios each involving some of those factions that play out over several seasons in 1627. There is a timeline of events connecting all six scenarios and the routes across Beast Valley of several groups are mapped out. There is a concluding scenario involving Velhara, lady of the Wild herself. Once again, the author provides a comprehensive set of NPC stat blocks in a separate document. This is a simple but effective innovation that more authors might wish to adopt. It is a great help to the GM to have a folio of all the required statistics in one place. This supplement has a great deal or reusability.

I’m really looking forward to getting this to the table.

So… why didn’t I give this five stars? Simply, the scenario needs a thorough proof-read – there are too many typos. On one page alone we encounter “Gabji”, “Esrolis” and the “Luners”. On another we have “Esrolain”, “Grazelandes” and the “Sum” Dome Temple. Fixing mis-spellings and grammatical errors, far less prevalent in Bonn Kanach, would turn this into a five star product.

Apart from these minor quibbles Velhara’s Mirror is a well-constructed and valuable contribution to the Jonstown Compendium. I am looking forward to Part 3.

Hi Peter Thanks for your review, criticism is always appreciated when constructive. Part 3 is on its way though sadly delayed due to the real life getting in the way, I'm hoping for a summer release... I'm glad you and your players are enjoying my take on Beast Valley. Cheers MP

The Duel at Dangerford
Publisher: Chaosium

This supplement is excellent value, particularly with the addition of wonderfully evocative art by Hirotsugu Kaga. If the metaplot of Glorantha has always seemed a bit remote to you (as it has for me) then Duel at Dangerford grabs you by the scruff of your neck and shows you how to make it accessible and fun. You can almost hear the gathered hordes hooting and howling (and wagering) as the Adventurers duel (at Dangerford...) to keep the Lunar army at bay.

Duel at Dangerford is also helpful for GM's trying to get a feel for what the aftermath of the Dragonrise feels like in northern Sartar. Although this follows a non-canonical timeline, it matters not - Acts 1 and 2 are a great resource to supplement the "The Hero Wars Begin" section of The History of Dragon POass in The Glorantha Sourcebook.

There is some additional material in the supplement - the expansions for two scenarios/locations in Nymie Vale are very welcome. I'm less clear on why I would want several pages of playtest feedback on another RQG supplement (Smoking Ruin) but it may come in handy when I run that scenario so I will rule in favour of its inclusion.

This was one of my first JC purchases and one I keep coming back to for reference. Highly recommended.

I added those appendices -- my "Smoking Ruin" playtest notes and "Dragon of Thunder Hills" suggestions -- as free extras: it didn't feel sensible to share such spoiler-laden content to the Facebook group or BRP Central forum, but I thought only RuneQuest GMs would be buying my scenario, and at least some of them would like it. The playtest feedback was already written, I just lightly edited it for publication. The "Thunder Hills" bits are stuff I came up with for my own game: I particularly like what it does to Tarndisi's Grove. Thank you very much for the generous review! And yes, the scenario was written to show my players a slice of the bigger picture: this was when they first learned the Lunars were still holding on in Alda-Chur, and witnessed the start of the [REDACTED BY ROYAL COMMAND].

Secrets of Dorastor
Publisher: Chaosium
by Peter W. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 12/13/2022 02:04:03

This is a great resource for a sandbox campaign in Dorastor - there is a wealth of locations, NPCs encounters and treasures. For those players looking, most likely, to meet their eternal doom it can surely be found in the pages of this supplement. As another reviewer has said - this is where your Superworld characters go to die. I confess I'm not sure of the point of having NPC's with skills in the hundreds of percent but that's simply a matter of campaign style and does not detract from my assessment of this valuable addition to the JC.

I have two minor quibbles on the visual form of Secrets of Dorastor that mean this is not quite a five-star publication in my opinion: (1) the NPC stats are not blocked out as is customary in many JC and Chaosium publications. Instead, they are simple body text alongside the rest of the supplement. This makes them harder to spot and navigate impacting facility of use. (2) the maps are very simplistic and do not evoke the setting or the feel of Glorantha. They are a minimum viable proposition and thus a missed opportunity to provide visual imapct and appeal.

Those two points aside, I rate this JC offering highly and would recommend to any GM planning to venture into the Land of Doom.

Thanks for the review. 1. This was my first supplement and the stats were done slightly differently to later ones. The conversion to Classic format was done by Master Gollum as a favour and I think he used the classic format for stats. 2. Being colourblind, colour maps confuse me, as they often don't make sense to me. So, I prefer simple black and white maps. You will notice that all the maps in Secrets of Dorastor and the Holiday Dorastor range have the same style. This was a design choice. However, Dario Corallo has made a lovely map of Dorastor, on the Jonstown Compendium, which is in colour and has insets showing various places. Also, Anders Tonnberg has done another glorious colour map of Dorastor.

Ruins of Bonn Kanach
Publisher: Chaosium
by Peter W. [Verified Purchaser]

This contribution to the JC deserves a lot more prominence. It is a well crafted, location-based scenario allowing players to explore the ruins of an ancient citadel in the Wilds of Beast Valley. The scenario is thoguhtfully produced to a high standard of presentation. It includs VTT maps and both colour and greyscale versions of the main scenario and NPC rosters. The NPC roster deserves a special mention - rather than litter the main scenario book with NPC stat blocks, these are all provided together in a supplemental PDF. This makes it much easier to GM and has great re-use.

My players enjoyed several sessions exploring the ruins. If your party wants a good, old-fashioned and uncomplicated trawl to loot some ruins and encounter a variety of adversaries then look no further than Bonn Kanach.

This is a solid 5 stars. I have bought and will run the Part 2 of the Beast Valley campaign.

Highways & Byways - A Wayfarer's Companion
Publisher: Chaosium
by Peter W. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 04/22/2022 06:05:52

This is a very welcome addition to the time-poor GM's arsenal. It is a compendium of travel logistics and routes (roads, trails and waterways) throughout Dragon Pass supported by a short description of each stage of the route - settlements and travellers that might be encountered. It is therefore a reference guide, much in the vein of the Weapons and Equipment book from Chasoium. This extends the range of very useful RQ supplements from Drew Baker. At 107 pages this companion is good value. Thoroughly recommended.

This is a great little scenario. It will fit in just about anywhere and will provide a session or two of play. The premise is quite simple and that's just fine. I used this as a 'filler' episode between two larger seasonal instalments of my campaign. It's very easy to hook into - and out of. The maps are well produced and the NPC's have their own motivations. there is lots of fun to be had with this scenario - excellent value and thoroughly recommended.

The art and layout of this supplement are first rate. The Broo literally leap out of the page at you (p.11 and p.25 anyone!). Any one of these monsters would make a great arch-enemy for a band of PC's. The pack is rounded out with some fun (?!) new diseases and a simple Apple Lane-like scenario. Highly recommended.
