Dark Trails RPG - Bootleg Edition

This book is an excellent take on the DCC engine, presenting an entire system for running weird Western adventures. Think gunslingers, magic, incursions of the Old Ones, and existential dread, all in one package. This particular product is billed as the quickstart rules, but really presents a full system for running all eleven new classes from 1st to 2nd level, including 0-level character generation, with new spells, new equipment, new crit and fumble tables, and an entire adventure included. The artwork is topnotch and this is a great introductory resource to hold you over until the full core book is released later this year. There's a plethora of on-line free material available for it through the DCC fan-driven Gongfarmer's Almanac as well. My only quibble is with the paper quality DTRPG uses for the standard printed version...it really demands to have a high quality print version available, instead of just the standard. Highly recommend it to anyone loking for some weird western goodness.

Vehicle Mayhem!

This zine-length PDF is a great addition to the Mutant Crawl Classics/DCC system, with a unique spin on a Mad Max/Car Wars style post-apocalyptic road race. For those familiar with DCC, the play is smooth and intuitive, using the dice chain for negative and positive modifiers. It's run in turns/laps, with a random event each turn, ranging from road obstacles to non-aligned snipers to the dreaded sand worm. Car types and weapons are statted up, as are other possible car mods. This leads me to what may be the best part of the mini-game, which is modding your own matchbox cars to represent the be-weaponed chop-shop vehicles of the post-apocalypse. Played it with a 9 and 11 year old and they had a great time, including modding up their own cars. I will say that, although it can be played with as few as 2-3 players, it plays a lot better with 5-8. Buy it, mod up some cheap toy cars, and spend some time with VEHICLE MAYHEM! You won't be sorry.
