I recall when the Vanrichten's book on Liches came out. I thought that it was really neat (but not as neat as Vampires). This book is like having five of that book. It also has a good background story to it.

It is hard to have decent Liches in most campaigns. I mean, the Vampires at least get to look good, and the Lich is ugly with things falling off. This is a good source of ideas for what people are lugging around in those freighters. The author has made up some neat little names for several of the commodities that would be traded. This is a very well thought-out book on what would happen if the fiends (demons, devils) had conquered a campaign world. It is really neat, and something that I had played in previous campaigns. I wish that the GM had this book then, as it would have enhanced an already fun campaign. Now you have something to do if you want your campaign to go to Hell. You can have it go to your campaign, instead.<br><br><b>LIKED</b>: Who doesn't like a grim, dark setting? This book reminds me of some old Dragon Magazine articles, issue 121 I think. Basically you get what it would be like for a character to go to mage school. It is not Hogwartz, though (and that is a good thing). It also reminds me of the D&D Gazeteer of the wizards of Glantri. These are all a good thing, and it expanded on all of those.

This book adds a lot of depth to what it would be like to study to become a wizard, and it makes for an interesting campaign, too. I had to make use of the RPGNow Deposit to get this one the day that it came out. Like with the others I am not disappointed. The Animist uses spells that are normally considered to be "druid spells", and can also tap into the spirits of nature. This ability is kind of "Brave Starr", but that is OK. The Animist also takes advantage of the bonus material provided, which is an enhancement on the way that Familiars and Animal Companions are handled. Finally a good version of the druid that isn't a priest. The Red magic has spells such as Flight, Lightning Bolt, Light, and Fireball. It is the "combat mage" color. That is good, because the specialist class is called the Battlemage, and it reminds me of the Valkyries of Norse legend. But instead of being a female warrior of the gods, it is available to mortals. Of course, that does not exclude one from playing a female Battlemage that is serves the gods. The Blue magic is rather neat, it covers spells that affect magic itself and time. It can be a powerful color to weild. The Metamage, its specialist class, is great to have around if you plan on messing with the magic of others. I like the magic of Orange. The magic covers shape-shifting, mutations, and entropy. It is a very versatile color. The specialist of Orange magic, the Unmaker, looks to be a fun class to play. You get to have a little fun of the "wild mage" from AD&D 2nd Edition's Tome of Magic, but with a system that is not so bizarre. This is not your ordinary "black" magic. There are no Necromantic spells, for instance. The spells that belong to the color Black tend to be from the Element of Earth, protection, and anti-magic. The specialist of Black magic, the Cthonurge, reminds me of a metal-loving, "tank" of a character. It is a well-designed class.
