Weekend at Strahd's
Publisher: Dungeon Masters Guild

I was born at the end of the 1980s. I was only alive for 1 year of the decade, but that doesn't mean I don't love and appreciate the raditude of the era. From big hair to Back to the Future the 80s is a decade we look back on with much fondness, even if we weren't alive during the magic. And if I wanted to capture the pure essence of the 1980s aesthetic and play it in a D&D module I'd run "Weekend at Strahd's".

This one shot adventure that promises 1-2 hours of wicked play is a very tongue in cheek module with so many pop culture references your head will spin. As a DM you get to lead players down a garden path and see if they figure out just which popular 80s flick they've wandered into. And with added links to music tracks on Spotify you're sure to be the most tubular DM in town when the needle drops on each music cue.

Not only are the pop culture references totally bodacious but Anthony Joyce and Oliver Clegg know how to write great encounters. Each area you trave l to in Strahd's castle as you puppet his lifeless, animated corpse is different and full of radical caricatures of popular 80s celebs (as well as a couple D&D cameos), and unique situations that your party will have to really think about in order to collect the pieces of the Pentaforce to finally destroy Strahd. The illustrations throughout are hilarious and the graphic design is incredible and perfectly captures a mall food court from the time period.

“Weekend at Strahd’s” would be a perfect way to continue your grizzly and macabre “Curse of Strahd” campaign to keep the party going with just one more adventure or it would make a great Halloween party one shot to play while dressed up as 80s characters while you eat too much candy. However you see fit, this module is a great addition to any DMs library and I highly recommend picking it up, even just to read, unless you want a valley girl to say you’re grody to the max!

PS: Where’s the beef?

Beyond the Basics

You’ve watched a few episodes of Critical Role or Dice, Camera, Action! and you decide you want to be the next great DM! You get the free Basic 5e rules from the WotC website and get a group of friends, some dice, and pen and paper but as the eyes stare at you, and a bead of sweat rolls down your forehead you realize you don’t have anything prepared, or even know how to prepare an encounter! That’s where “Beyond the Basics” steps up and offers you a helping hand. To the new dungeon master creating an encounter can be one of the most difficult parts of making your very first campaign. This supplement is designed to be used in conjunction with the D&D 5e Basic Rules and has an encounter for every major monster included. Some encounters are the classic swords and monsters style like “Cockatrice” by Charlie Smith which has the party track down and save a farmer’s favorite goose from the clutches of a fowl monster, while others work to subvert expectations of traditional monsters or even the encounter itself. TK Johnson changes the way a new DM might see an encounter from a confrontation to a social, learning experience in “Manticore”, the only way the party can fail is if they decide to fight the monster in this more subdued but still tense character study encounter. Each encounter includes an afterword by the author that gives more insight into the content. Every afterward is different, Celeste Conowitch uses her afterward to suggest plot hooks to continue the encounter, changing it from a single night adventure into a campaign, like in “Adult Red Dragon” where the party will rally a community and take on a fearsome dragon. Some highlight the intent behind the encounter like Jen Vaughn’s “Gargoyle” about a father wanting to learn how to be a better dad by using the party as guinea pigs. Every afterword is different but all will help a new DM learn what inspires, and helps fuel an encounter. There are also lots of small details that help make this guide a polished work. Pronunciation guides follow typical fantasy names which can be difficult for even the seasoned D&D player to parse out how to say some of the made up names. The header of each section has a label for which kind of interaction will be in that part of the encounter, be it “social” or “combat” and some of the encounters come with a content warning should they include anything that might be triggering for the players. The illustrations are amazing, especially Kayla Cline’s “Dadgoyle” and black light inspired “Nothic”. Armed with the Basic Rules, some dice, and this supplement a fledgling dungeon master has all the tools to create a fun, compelling session of D&D for a table and with all the insight into the creative process, intent, and inspiration that these writers give anyone can be well on their way to becoming the next Mercer or Perkins.

Wolf Lord of Yol

The heavy, ancient drones echo as if from deep under water. A pulsing heart beat of kick and snare drum creates a steady rhythm as the sound of ambient wind mixes with organ and horn that crescendo into a driving rock mix giving way suddenly to a melodic piano tune giving an eerie sense of dread. Mors Certa - Mark of the Wolf Lord is the evocative musical piece used to set the tone of Cauldron and Tower’s first foray into the multi-faceted world of adventure writing, “Wolf Lord of Yol”. John Bultena and A.R. Rye have created a beautiful sandbox style adventure for your adventurers to get lost in. With a rich lore The Valley of Yol is sure to give your party hours of play as they uncover the amazingly detailed history of the area. What begins as a seemingly normal quest quickly turns into a budding mystery that finds players travelling from town to town in search of answers to questions they don’t know they are asking. The cities and villages are populated with colorful characters each with their own backstories and motivations and every area feels unique. Wolf Lord of Yol uses an Escalation system in this adventure that causes things to happen with or without the players actively taking part that can have dire consequences for the valley itself. The adventure also reminds Dungeon Masters to take particular note of certain NPC’s and what events transpire because not only is this an amazing adventure that promises 20 - 30 hours of gameplay, but it is only the first in a series of adventures that are all interconnected. With included full detail maps of The Valley of Yol as well as specific areas and dungeons, awesome new monster options that can be dropped into more than just this campaign, character options and interesting magical items, the aforementioned mp3 by Mors Certa that is absolutely an integral part of the mood of the story as well as fierce cover art by David Paul Seymour (available as a shirt) this adventure will surely lead to many brutal nights playing D&D. Can’t wait to see what's next for the Cauldron & Tower team! Twitter: @JacksNotFunny

Wow, thank you for the exhaustive and in-depth review. We really tried to craft the way this adventure is presented in the manner in which I create my adventures: set a mood. I do that with music. I hear a song, think "This is what I want to go down in my game, I want my players to experience these moods but in D&D." Then I write and craft it out. The Escalation system is one we use: create a sense of urgency. All stories use time, but that impending result sets up the horror. That things will happen well beyond your own will.
