When I first read Descent into Avernus, I was honestly a little disappointed by its lack of modularity. Despite being an interesting concept and fun execution, it seemed very rooted in the Forgotten Realms setting, meaning I would be unable to port it to my long running homebrew game. That was until reading “Monster Hunt:Avernus”, which provides modular hooks for including the monsters and flavor within Descent into any campaign setting! Each individual hunt is given its own plot hooks and rumors, allowing the DM to seed these any time they could need them. Unique NPCs and quest givers populate every hunt, with succinct roleplaying and descriptive details (the inclusion of pronouns for every NPC is a really nice touch; I’m always happy to see representation of they/them pronouns in TTRPG content). Each quest is detailed with rewards, including 21 new and thematic magic items, which could be included into a standard Descent playthrough if not used here. What’s most exciting is the inclusion of battle/dungeon maps for each individual hunt! Improving upon the format of the original “100 Monster Hunts” by adding even more detail, “Monster Hunt: Avernus” allows DMs to spend less time finding ways to plan the encounters, and more time playing through these fun hunts with their players! This is well worth the price, and easily usable in nearly any style of game. I’m already seeding these hooks into my homebrew sandbox game, and getting the play out of Descent that I would have ended up missing otherwise!
