X1 The Isle of Dread (Basic)

What I liked about this adventure was how it freed me up to really play around with the player's could do on the island. There's a lot of flexibility in this adventure which really fit well with the game I was running at the time.

This adventure requires a lot of prep work. Its literally up to the GM to basically populate the dungeon. However, they give you a good premise to start from, which I enjoy. So if you need a place to start and need a pre-made dungeon but YOU want to fill in the details... then this is perfect for you!

Castles & Crusades Players Handbook 7th Printing
Publisher: Troll Lord Games
by Jeremy C. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 11/01/2020 11:01:21

The book layout is fantastic! The art is wonderful! The creation of classes like the knight is utter perfection! I wanted to love this game so bad! But I can't. The d20 game system that C&C is based on is utterly flawed. The Siege Engine is built upon the "stat check" or "attribute check" mechanic of the D20 system - which is broken. In Gygax's 1e/2e system, if you wanted to flip a table over, lets say. You might have to roll a STR check. If your STR is 12, then you have to roll a 12 or less on a D20. If your STR is 9 you need to roll a 9 or less on a D20. So you can see it clearly is more difficult for a weaker character (STR 9) to flip over the table vs a comparatively stronger character (STR 12). In C&C they both have an equal chance. There is no recognition in any "stat check" that there is a difference between an Attribute having a 9, 10, 11, or 12 score. They are all equal in this game. This is the Siege Engine which is the foundation that runs the entire game. We tried removing this from the game and going back to the Gygaxian method of stat checks but it ends up muddying the entire system. If you LOVE 3rd edition. This game is better. If you LOVE 4th edition. This game is better. If you LOVE 1e/2e. This game system will make you lose your mind in utter frustration.

Call of Cthulhu Starter Set
Publisher: Chaosium
by Jeremy C. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 11/01/2020 10:43:52

This is a fantastic product! The starter adventures are fun. The rules are clear. My only complaint is the introduction of the bonus/penalty dice system - which I despise and refuse to use. It is clearly a blatant "copy" of the advantage/disadvantage system from 5e. However, its implementation is messy. And it is illogical. If you really really really want to allow a player to reroll dice... than just let them reroll both d10's. Why muddy it up with reroling only the 10's of the d100? But an even bigger question: why do it all? If something is easier for the investigater to do, then just give them -10% or -20% to their chances of succeeding. If its harder, put a +10% or +20% on their dice rolls. This way the modifier is representive of the difficulty of the task. Rerolling is just giving more chances. Why not 3 rerolls? Why not 4, 5, 6? It makes just as much sense. The bonus/penalty dice system was a big silly mistake for 7th edition and I hope to never see it again in an otherwise perfect game system.

Beautiful maps! For one of my all time favorite campaigns. These load up great in Roll20. Having the grid dimensions in the lower left corner of every map makes it even easier to set up!

OSRIC Unearthed
Publisher: Vigilance Press
by Jeremy C. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 06/07/2014 19:44:07

I was hesitant to purchase this product because it didn't look like much effort was put into the cover design... However, this is a really good OSRIC reference book that incorporates SOME of the UA book materials and SOME of the OA materials. I would have preferred to see 2 books: one that is an OSRIC conversion of UA and a second that is a conversion for OA. However, I do love the Samurai, Ninja, and the Knight... It is just that this could have been better if it was more focused as a straight conversion of one book instead of condensing and combining two.
