Magical Murder Mansion
Publisher: Skerples
by Adrian M. G. [Verified Purchaser]

This is a great fun-house dungeon! Skerples always does highly usable material, and this is no exception. I ran this for a group of 3 using Knave, for 3 sessions. The group dissolved, but we had a good time while it lasted. There is a definite cartoon/discworld vibe to the whole module, a few hidden references, and good layout and organization. My only criticism is a handful of too-wacky rooms, which need careful planning and organization from the referee to not break the sense of disbelief from players.

For the listed price, this is an absolute steal. Also, very easy to print at home. The whole thing is black&white, without a lot of art or images.

Dead by Dawn (Starting)

Conclusion: If you are slightly interested in SotDL, buy this thing. And run it. In my opinion it's an excellent introductory adventure to Shadow of the Demon Lord. Better than the recommended Dark Deeds in Last Hope if your players prefer action-packed stuff (and they usually do), and you need less hand holding to run a game.

If you are interested in detailed points, check out my post on the adventure (contains spoilers!): https://themanwithahammer.blogspot.com/2019/11/dead-by-dawn-review-redux.html

Calpurnia's 101 Lesser Magical Items
Publisher: Dungeon Masters Guild
by Adrian M. G. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 07/05/2019 04:00:50

This is a very good and extensive selection of tier 1-2 magic items. Really like the fresh ideas in here, and the Variants (to make an item cursed, or just give you more options to tweak it). The writing in Calpurnia's voice describing most of the items is very flavorful, and funny for the GM to read. I really digg this kind of style, also popular in WoTC books like XGtE.

Some more artwork would have been nice, since I like to give those as handouts to my players when they receive the item in question.

Good buy, and at a reasonable price. Will be using these items in my campaigns.

Battle Scars
Publisher: Schwalb Entertainment

This is supplemental material on wounds that your character can take. I really like the tone of those in my games, and they are heavily inspired by WFRPG.

Unfortunately Battle Scars is too scarce, and I was expecting more tables and effects. This doesn't do justice to what I had in mind to such an important facet of fantasy horror, and wished there was a lot more content. For the listed price of 1.49$ it's not a rip-off though, but still feels as a half finished bake.

Black Pudding Heavy Helping Vol. One
Publisher: Random Order Creations
by Adrian M. G. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 07/05/2019 03:50:37

Black Pudding zines are amazing. It feels as if you were looking into the personal notebook of a very experienced OSR GM. The illustrations and tone are up my alley, cartoonish and with interesting ideas thrown left and right. There's character sheets, character classes, monsters, magic items, dungeons, optional rules... tons of great content!

In theory you could get all the zines for the pay what you want individually. But I decided to go with this compilation, which just orders all the content nicely, and it's a way to support the authors. Still waiting on the delivery of the print option.

I hope there're more of these coming along, and I hope to continue supporting the excellent work!

Genius Loci
Publisher: Schwalb Entertainment

This is a hefty supplement that sprung from the Occult Philosophy Kickstarter, clocking at 21 pages (including cover and a backcover with promotion for other titles). Genies and elementals get a proper treatment, including lore, juicy d20 random tables, and monster blocks. Tons of very fleshed out genies and their servants (gnomes, salamanders, undines,...). Included are 6 pieces of art, with the usual SotDL aesthetic which I really digg.

HIGHLY recommended. I'm glad I received this as part of the Kickstarter. HAIL!

The Blasphemies of Bor Bwalsch

This is a very nice supplement, and it delivers exactly what it promises: spells for D&D 5e. Nasty ones at that. Anyone familiar enough with Shadow of the Demon Lord will recognize the tone and flavor of most of the spells presented here. They work nicely for a hag/necromancer/lich or other nasty villain. Players' faces when they can't find the spell in their PHB is priceless! 5/5 would recommend.

Oh, I Hate Spiders! - A 5e side trek adventure
Publisher: Terry Herc
by Adrian M. G. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 02/12/2019 10:09:28

This is a fun little adventure. I believe the premise and original quest are cleverly designed, and would make for a good one-off session.

If I can give some constructive criticism to the adventure, it would be:

  • Missing maps for more levels of the inn. Granted, these are easy to improvise, but it would have been a nice touch for completeness sake (cellar, second level, etc).
  • The table with "Hazards" is quite nice, but would benefit from some more writeup. The trapped guest makes a nice touch, to have a non-combat encounter. Who is it? Add more check ideas (e.g. Persuasion to calm the guest down, or have them hand a useful potion to the party (of hill giant strength, makes grappling checks for capturing the spiders easier?)).
  • The rarity ranking of the "Phase Belt" is probably completely off, since it's a 1/day item, with a huge drawback; seems weaker than rare to me.
  • There is no indication as to what a "swarm of bees" is. I assume a "swarm of insects" from the basic rules, but with a flying speed?

All in all, and given that it is FREE I would encourage everyone to get this whilst they can, and have run with this adventure.
