Advanced Tiny Dungeon
Publisher: Gallant Knight Games
by Robert L. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 05/16/2022 06:02:07

Overall: This is a great alteration of the core Tiny Dungeon system. It fleshes out a lot of aspects while still keeping the core system easy to learn and use. Ultimately I feel this is an improvement over the original system and hope the Gallant Knight Games does similiar 'Advanced' series for their other products that are based on TD2e. I also hope they come out with a Hardcover 8x11 size book (not a fan of the smaller size that TD2e came in), the formatting of the PDF suggests this won't be an option however.

Here is a quick pro/con list

pro: formatting is more aestetically pleasing

pro: Artwork is a lot better (than TD2e)

pro: Conversion rules are given which is a plus

pro: Special effects actions are nice

pro: leveling system expanded

con: the bookmarks for the pdf are disorganized

con: PCs start with a mastered weapon (same in TD2e but I don't agree with it - I house rule no mastered weapons at start)

con: post level 8 xp expenditure options feel lacking

neither: Attack test allows for more damage to be dealt on either side - likewise Armor Class has been implemented to lower incoming damage possibly negating it entirely

neither: Initiative is done a little differently - hard to say if better or worse

neither: Classes have been devised and traits have been organized within classes restricting their usage (can be seen as good or bad)

TinyZine Compendium - 2019

Another Great Resource Much like the 2018 compendium, this one has a lot of additional content to enhance your game. Like it's predecessor it is a little unorganized, but bookmarks help with the digital version.

An Awesome Resource A really good compendium of additions for your games. The only downside to the product is that it is a bit disorganized when reading cover to cover- the bookmarks of the PDF help with this. Definitely worth the purchase.

I ran my first session of this last night for a group of 3 players who had never played a tabletop rpg and who had never read the rules to this one (i made their characters for them).

It went very well! They picked up the rules quickly and the game went smoothly.

I ran one combat in which they had stumbled upon a gun fight between two rival gangs in a dockside warehouse. Since there were no rules on how to make non-super npcs i just gave them 5 stress and ruled that guns deal 2 stress. There were nine gangbangers (5 vs 4) but they werent entirely focused against the heroes (to be fair) as they were more concered with each other.

I threw in some twists and one of the heros weaknesses, but in the end they were victorious.

All in all it was a lot of fun, and very easy to run/play.

Return of the Lazy Dungeon Master

Going to keep this short; this is a very helpful product and teaches you great methods.

The only con would be that it doesnt offer much in the way of useful advice for prepping an entire campaig. This is due to the approach it presents requires much improvisation session to session making it impossible to prep an entire campaign.

i also would have liked to seen some sort of approach to quickly prepping dungeons.

There is a companion product that really should have been integrated within this as a single book. That product contains fillable sheets for the methods taught in this book, which is odd that they werent included here.

All in all if you want to run games with little planning on a session by session basis, this product is a great read.

Thank you very much for the review! As you mention, the style of game prep discussed in this book focuses heavily on improvisation. There is a section on campaign building that focuses on the main themes of the campaign and the major influencers of the campaign (be they villains or some other force) called "fronts". It doesn't go into planning out an entire campaign because, in the experiences of many DMs, campaigns never really end up where we think they are going to go. Instead, a focus on the next adventure often offers the most benefit. The companion product you mention, the Lazy DM's Workbook, contains 48 pages of material that we couldn't pack into this book without increasing the price. It is also 5e specific where the rest of this book can be used with any fantasy RPG. The Lazy DM's Workbook is available for a reasonable price separately, however. You can also download the blank preparation pages for free at https://slyflourish_content.s3.amazonaws.com/lazy_dm_workbook_fill-in_pages.pdf Thank you again!

I purchased the physical book of this, and while I haven't used the monsters in a game (I'm sure they're fine), I have a HUGE gripe with this book. The quality is garbage! This is because of 2 issues; 1) Resolution; the image resolution is horrible- text is fine, but all the artwork is blurry and dull. It's all black and white, which is fine with the style of DCC- but because its so dull its more grey and white. This is even the case on the cover! 2) Artwork: the preview shown on this website is very misleading because the art isn't shown on any of the preview pages. It is very poor. To be clear, I loved the art in the DCC core book, that had great art, this is not that. This looks like a child trying to emulate that art.

It's unfortunate because there isn't any offical monster manual, and this is really the only one that I've found for the system.
