DDAL10-05 A Blight in the Darkness

This adventure is a little stuck in a weird place where it feels like there should have been more adventures in between 10-04 and this one, and because there weren't if feels like the deus ex machina to save the NPC at the end of 10-04 just to immediately throw them back at the party, yet again, here in 10-05 was unnecessarily repetitive. On the other hand it's understandable that they needed to quickly wrap things up to move on to the more cosmic level of horror in the second half of the S10 adventures.

That aside, this is a pretty enjoyable combat with a mix of challenging combats and some exploration.

This is a more exploration and social heavy module, though it does have a potentially dangerous combat or two. As others noted, the various checks required by exploration & interactions can wildly swing success & enjoyment of this adventure based on party composition, or the DM's ability to modify the module to better accomodate ill-suited parties. My party had a decent spread of skills, so while things weren't smooth sailing we really enjoyed this adventure.

This adventure has a mix of murder mystery roleplaying, hazardous exploration, and a solid combat at the end. Some of the other reviewers have done a good job of describing some of the issues with the mystery part of it, which are complaints with which I'd agree.

As someone who was still new to Adventuer's League when this was released, I enjoyed this. In hindsight it is, as several of the other reviewers pointed out, a bit of a grab bag of quests that drops the previous threads of 10-01 to introduce new ones. How well that works for you will depend on whether you're hoping for more horror vibes and atmosphere, or whether you're okay being along for the ride.

Overall this is a good start to the light-horror themes of the first half of season 10 while providing a series of challenges for newer players to start to learn how to adventure.

After loving DRW-EP-03 (the other Terminal Ambitions epic), this was really disappointing. The setting and premise of the adventure help raise this up a little, but several of the encounters are badly tuned with no one across any of the tables running it getting close to completing them successfully. The final encounter can be hit or miss as a single skill check can end it in 5 minutes with no real threat (to be fair, it's high DC); whether or not that's "fun" is going to vary from group to group. Beyond that, the tiers have the same encounters, which is less interesting to me; I actually wonder if the sheer number of potential encounters was because they meant to divide them up by tier but just... forgot? or ran out of time?

This is one of my favorite epics, both because the T2 & T3 versions have separate encounters to increase replayability (and lots of options for each section within each tier), and because it has one of the best resource systems for allowing players to decide what benefits to get during the epic. One of my biggest complaints about epics is that they tend to hamstring short rest based players (particularly warlocks), but this epic gives players the opportunity to earn rewards that they can spent for buffs, like short & long rests. I had a blast with both tiers' encounters, with the T3 combats being especially challenging and satisfying.

This is a combat-light module, though the combats that can be triggered can be deadly for the unprepared. Instead, this is more centered on exploration, which is great because it's setting up Xorvintroth, where players are going to be for the rest of the Terminal Ambitions DRW arc (14-20).

I really enjoyed this adventure both times I played it, but I can understand how less experienced players or less optimal group compositions will struggle to survive this adventure. This one is definitely for groups that enjoy extra challenging combats.

This is more of an exploration-heavy adventure compared to DRW-15 that proceeded it and DRW-17 after it, which provides an opportunity to flesh out what's been going on down in Xorvintroth and set the stage for what's coming next.

DDAL-DRW-18 Against the Machine

This is probably my least favorite of the Terminal Ambitions DRW adventures due to the each encounter having design issues.

The first combat was challenging and engaging. It can theoretically be avoided with the right preparations, but the adventure semi-arbitrarily puts so many restrictions on how players can approach (beyond all of the normal Xorvintroth restrictions) that it might as well just require a decision to engage or avoid the combat.

The second encounter seems like a pure loot drop, especially given the issues with the final encounter. It adds nothing to the adventure beyond a little bit of momentary flavor, which might have been enjoyable were there not so many other frustrations with the adventure.

The final encounter could really just be the sole encounter for the entire module because there's so much going on. The constant pressure pushing the players forward means they'll end up skipping portions, but even then it can take 2-4 hours to get through everything. It also means they'll skip interest stuff (including treasure), which is why it feels like the second encounter is there simply to ensure players get something from this adventure. The final combat also badly needs more ways that it can be approached beyond immediately triggering combat, which has the a very real potential for a 1 round TPK with the number of casters in the room; as well as needing more extraction options, which is odd considering how good a job the designers did providing multiple entrances to the building.

If you're an experienced DM willing to dig into this adventure and modify things, then you could probably make a good adventure out of this (see Rick's review). But as it was run for me, it was a truly disappointing end to what had been a very good run of adventures starting with the T2 mods.

This feels like the real end to the Terminal Ambitions DRW storyline, with DRW-20 being an epilogue. As such, there is a lot going on in this adventure, so much so that players will probably only be able to explore a portion of the entire main map; certainly makes multiple play throughs more enjoyable :). The final battle was frantic from start to finish, and a ton of fun.

DDAL-DRW-20 The Death of Szass Tam

My main problem with this module is that the entire exploration section feels unnecessary; it's interesting but it's also just there. It adds little to the adventure beyond padding the adventure before the big fight. It really feels like this could have just taken the big fight and added it to the end of DRW-19.

The big fight itself is definitely a challenging change of pace. As a ranged rogue it was less complicated, but definitely an extra challenge for melee fighters and casters. As a result, I enjoyed it while those players were a lot more frustrated by it. YMMV.
