The adjective that springs to mind when I think about the incredible accomplishment that this book represents is "generous". From the moment you start digging in to the 5-course meal that is Ulruant's Guide to the Planes: The Shadowfell, you know something special is happening.
This supplement gives DMs and their erstwhile adventuring parties everything they may need to craft incredible stories together in everyone's favorite Plane of Despair.
DMs will love the new monsters, awesomely epic-tier villains, and cool new spells in this guide. But I think DMs will most love the detail that the team has poured into fleshing out the various (and widely varied) locales. Every location in this guide comes with a plentiful helping of tantalizing plot hooks, ready for the creative storyteller to weave into their sessions. I found the ruler of Gloomwrought, Prince Rolan and his fallen mistress compelling, but as a literature nerd I especially found myself drawn to Markovia in which a Frankenstein analog wreaks terror amongst his suffering subjects. Speaking of Dread Domains, the book includes no less than three massive cities within the Shadowfell, but also several Domains of Dread like Markovia which are prison-like demiplanes formed by the Dark Powers to host the very worst of the worst. These places come fully fleshed out with backstories as to their creation and those of the awful Darklords imprisoned within them. Adventuring through any one of these and discovering/resolving the evil within would make great campaign arcs, and this book includes five of them!
Players (yes, this book is for players and DMs!) will appreciate the numerous new character options in Part 4. The team has four new Races to choose from and every Class now has at least one new Subclass on offer that fits within the dark and dreary framework of the Shadowfell. Of particular interest in my mind were the Circle of Nightmares Druid and the Obeah Knight Fighter subclass. The former gets Nightmare dice (as if we needed a reason to throw more dice!) that can have some very real effects on an opponent's sleep patterns including lowering their Max HP or giving them waking nightmares. The Obeah Knight blends the martial prowess of the fighter and some component-based magic. I found myself thinking of The Witcher and how Geralt uses oils and other alchemical witchcraft to enhance his combat abilities.
Ulruant's Guide to the Planes: The Shadowfell is an impressive accomplishment. The original art looks terrific and adds to the feeling of the book, enhancing the writing as opposed to distracting from it. I will say that sometimes the formatting can feel a little cramped, but perhaps that is bound to happen when you compile a massive supplement spanning 260 dense pages. I'll take it as a side-effect of generosity.
I cannot wait for the print on demand book as I can definitely see continuing to use this guide for a long time!
Buy this book. :)
